Behymer/Picklesimers/and all others: The following was sent by Cyndi of Cyndi's Genealogy Sites on the Internet. I think it is helpful information for all of us. Happy Holidays! Twila Listowner Hi all - Last year I posted a message to the RootsWeb Listowners Mailing List which focuses on showing patience and kindness to our fellow online researchers. This year, I have seen an interesting phenomenon which is typical of the Internet. My note, from last year, is making its rounds right now, taking on a new life of its own. It was forwarded to the Listowners mailing list again this year and since then it has circled the globe a gazillion times, from South America, to Europe, to Australia and back to Puyallup, Washington, USA, more than once. I guess that means that the content is important to all of us. If others think so, then I believe it is time to repost that note again myself. Please read the text below and think of the Holiday Spirit as you go forth online. Happy Holidays to you and yours, Cyndi ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Date: Thu, 31 Dec 1998 15:19:30 -0800 From: Cyndi Howells <cyndihow@oz.net> To: listowners-L@rootsweb.com Message-Id: <4.1.19981231143548.011cd630@mail.oz.net> Subject: Time for some patience, kindness and teaching Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Hello all - Karen Isaacson and I have talked many times about how January effects our incoming e-mail flow. It is clearly a well-documented event now as we are already beginning to see it coming into play for the fourth-year running (since we first noted the phenomenon). I'm sure many of you will be seeing the same thing as List Owners and/or webmasters, so I thought I would pass on a bit of advice and food for thought. Each January we see a huge influx of newbies joining us online because Santa was generous and left a sparkling new computer under the tree. There are also many after-holidays sales which offer people the opportunity to purchase a snazzy new computer or modem. Many people get online for the first time and enthusiastically don their cyber-bikinis, hitting the surf with gusto. They are excited to be here and they are (much as we "oldbies" were) rightfully overwhelmed by all that there is to see and do. The language here is foreign to them. The technology is newer, fancier and zippier than they may have used in the past. And the way that we all participate in our giant, online genealogical society, while being very similar to offline groups, is still a bit different than they may be prepared for. In other words, it is a brave new world to them. I would like to put out a call to each of you to show these newbies that we are a friendly, welcoming and helpful group of online genealogists. To do so we all need to pitch in and show patience, understanding and kindness. We also need to put on our teaching caps and be prepared to show them the ropes. 1. Don't make assumptions. 2. Explain things in detail, include URLs and complete instructions. 3. Verify details and addresses before you send them to people. 4. Offer to help people privately via e-mail, off of the mailing lists. 5. Be prepared to explain things more than once, in more than one way. 6. Keep in mind that we were all new at one time. 7. Keep in mind that we all learn something new every day. There are several places online to which you can point newbies in order to help them learn about this new research venue. I have tried to make these easy to locate by setting up links on my site: Internet Stuff You Need To Know http://www.CyndisList.com/internet.htm Also be sure to point them to these basic starting places online: Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet http://www.CyndisList.com Your genealogical research portal onto the Internet RootsWeb http://www.RootsWeb.com See the RootsWeb Help Desk: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~help/index.htm Genealogy Resources on the Internet - Mailing Lists http://users.aol.com/johnf14246/gen_mail.html USGenWeb http://www.USGenWeb.org Good luck and successful surfing to everyone online - both newbies and oldbies, Cyndi ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Cyndi Howells Puyallup, Washington cyndihow@oz.net Cyndi's List - Over 39,400 links in over 90 categories! http://www.CyndisList.com My Book: "Netting Your Ancestors - Genealogical Research on the Internet" http://www.CyndisList.com/netting.htm ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Yvonne: Nice to meet you, and thanks for the kind words! Note that I have not added any information on Abraham Adam or his brother, David's descendants in my database other than their immediate children, as I did not want to duplicate what was in John Wayne and John Walter Picklesimer's book: The Picklesimers of Eastern Kentucky. I have been concentrating my efforts on all the other Beckelhymer/Picklesimers. MARY LOU MAYBERRY(BEHYMER)
Richard, Thank you for the update on Mary Ida. I have updated my records and here is a copy of what I now have on Kendrick's family. By the way! The web site can not be updated due to my inability to access the old site on Family Tree Maker. I lost my hard drive and when I reinstalled the software on the new drive I could not successfully access the old site. I now have two pages out there and the last one contains the information as shown here. John W. Picklesimer
John, Thank you for your e-mail. This is such dedicated work you are doing. My 3rd great-grandfather is Nathaniel Picklesimer born: 11 July 1801 Virginia and died: 26 Feb 1885 Mudlick, Johnson County, Kentucky. Again, thank you for the information. Yvonne G. Halliday
Fellow Behymer researchers: I have just posted a fairly significant update to my web page. Point your browser to: http://members.home.net/johntippet/ The changes from the prior version (all in the census section) are the following: (1) I have transcribed and added a lot of the Behymer census enumerations for the years 1810 and 1850. I plan to add more in the future, as well as for the years, 1860, 1870 and 1880. (2) I did a lot of checking of census indices through the Ancestry.com web site, and found, a few new entries that I was not aware of, two of which I was very excited about: Nathaniel Beckelhamer in Brown County, OH for the year 1840 and Elijah B Hymer in Sangamon County, IL also in 1840. For the latter, I have yet to look up the actual census enumeration, but I did for Nathaniel. Other additions come from the census index search - if blank, in the listing, it means that I have yet to look them up. (3) I have added quite significantly to the 1820, 1830 and 1840 census enumeration sections of my web page. I spent a lot of time proof-reading the census entries for 1820, 1830 and 1840 and did correct a few errors. Those that changed slightly were for Chapman Archer, Christian Custer, Samuel Bhymer (p. 38), Abraham Becklehimer and Isaac Becklehimer, all for 1820; Samuel Beckelhimer? (p. 79), Jacob B. Hymer (Campbell County, KY), Samuel B. Hymer (p. 216), Joseph Windsor, Christian Custard, William B. Hymer (p. 2320), all for 1830; and Simeon Becklehamer, Solomon Behymer (p. 222), Samuel Lazena, John? Lazena, all for 1840. Also there were several additions. (4) FYI: the entries for the 1810 census for Solomon Pickelsimer and the 1820 census for Susanna Picklesimer differ from what John Wayne and John Walter Picklesimer indicate in their book, but they are correct (again, an outcome of the laborious proof-reading process). (5) There are several Behymers listed in the 1840 censuses that I do not have in my database. If you have information on the following, please contact me: Solomon Behymer (LaPorte Co, IN), Jesse Bicklehymer (Putnam Co, IN), Michael B. Hymer, Jr (Clermont Co, OH), Isaac Becklehimer (Cabell Co, VA), John Pickelsemon (Franklin Co, VA), and John Bickelhimer (Pulaski Co, VA). I welcome comments, corrections, additions, etc. on this endeavor. John Charles Tippet johntippet@home.com
This is to let those doing Picklesimers that Mary Ida Picklesimer(neeNealis) died November 13, 1999 in Scottsburg, Indiana. She was married to Kendrick Clay Picklesimer, who died in August,1985. He was the son of Kendrick Erasmus Picklesimer. John Picklesimer at his website has Kendrick Erasmus down as Noah Kendrick Picklesimer Sr.and Kendrick Clay Picklesimer as Jr. I don't know where he got his information but it is wrong. Please correct.
Today I posted an update to my web page. H. E. "Pickles", If you Virgil Picklesimer is from the North Carolina area, you should contact Penny Picklesimer, email address mincey@aol.com. She is a researcher of that branch of the family and may be in a better position to assist you. Good luck, John W. Picklesimer
Hello Pickles, The only info I have is what John W. Picklesimer has already sent you. Hope that info helps you. Take care, Bobby Picklesimer PSIMER55@aol.com
H. E. "Pickles", I am not sure if I have the right Virgil Picklesimer or not. The Virgil that I have was married to a Geneva Preston. They lived in Whitesburg, Kentucky for many years. Virgil worked for Southeast Coal Company. I believe that for a time they may have lived in Jenkins, Kentucky. Virgil was born July 9, 1899, and died October 1, 1973. Geneva Preston Picklesimer passed away this past April at the age of 102. Virgil and Geneva had six children; Marion Lewis Picklesimer, Lela Mae Picklesimer, Betty Jo Picklesimer, Judith Marie Picklesimer, Virgil Dennis Picklesimer, Jr. and Alan Picklesimer. If this is the same person that you are seeking, there are living relatives still in Whitesburg. If you need additional information, let me know. John W. Picklesimer
My father was from Wize County VA and was raised by a Virgil Picklesimer, hence my nickname of Pickles was derived from that. My fatehr, Howard Edward Newman, Sr. I would be happy to hear from you exspecially if you have information on any living relatives to Virgil Picklesimer. Thank you in advance for any light you can shine on this subject. Respectfully, H.E. "Pickles" Newman Jr.
Please note that my new E-mail address is: johntippet@home.com The old address was: JohnDoeTippet@csi.com This will be deactivated in a few days. Please update your address books to the new address. Fellow Behymer researchers: I have just posted a significant update to my web page. Point your browser to: http://members.home.net/johntippet/ Note that my old web page (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/JohnDoeTippet/) will be deactivated within the next few days, so please update your bookmarks to the new URL. This update contains over 2,000 descendants from our common ancestor, Johan George Beckelhymer, Elder of the Church of the Brethern of Amwell, Hunterdon County, NJ. The most significant changes from the prior version are the following: (1) Added the descendants of Abraham and David (both sons of Henry, Sr and grandsons of Abraham, Sr). This represents the NC and GA branch of the family. The majority of the data comes from the following sources: a booklit by Dewey W Pickelsimer on the descendants of David, a booklit entitled: Historical Outline of the Patterson, Hamilton, Osteen and Pickelsimer Families written in Aug, 1922, on the descendants of Abraham, and research of Michael Motes. Thanks, Michael! (2) Completed entering tax list and land transaction data for most of the early VA Beckelhymers. Most of this data is documented in John Wayne and John Walter Picklesimer's book: The Picklesimers of Eastern Kentucky. I have cleaned up the entries also, so that now rather than having several entries for an individual residing in a certain place for different tax years, I now combine this data into one entry covering the time span involved. This makes the narrative easier to read. (3) On the previously posted version of my web site, several tags of information (which included some disclaimers, references, etc., unfortunately) were not included due to a simple mistake on my part of not checking a certain box in TMG when I generated the descendancy report. This has been corrected with this update. (4) I am now of the strong opinion that Abraham Adam and David Picklesimer, progenitors of the two main branches of Eastern Kentucky Pickleimers are, in fact, sons of John, Sr. My reasons are described on my web page, and are summarized in the following. (1) John, Sr is known to have had two sons, Abraham and David, the former from the Nauvoo Temple Baptism for the Dead records and the latter from Aaron Behymer's diary. (2) The son David had a close relationship with his brother, Samuel, b. 1763 (again per Aaron's diary). (3) Several Davids appear in the early VA records, however, only one is even remotely close in age to Samuel. This would be the David who married first, Elizabeth Smith and second, Sarah Prater. (4) Per John Wayne Picklesimer, family legend has held that Abraham Adam and David Picklesimer were brothers. (5) Jonathan Beckelhymer listed himself as the uncle of Smith Beckelhymer. Smith Beckelhymer could have been the son of David Beckelhymer and his first wife, Elizabeth Smith, named after his mother. (6) Jonathan did not have a brother, David, baptized by proxy in the Nauvoo Temple Baptisms for the Dead circa 1845 when he had his other close relatives baptized. This may indicate that David was still alive, or if dead, that Jonathan was not aware of that fact. Very little is known about this David, in fact, he apparently left his family by his second wife circa 1822 and nothing further was heard from him. Because of this change in my thinking, Abraham, Jr, who I had shown as the son of John, Sr, I now show as the son of Abraham, Sr, i.e., I have swapped Abraham Adam with Abraham, Jr. Abraham, Jr being a son of Abraham, Sr is also more likely based on the close association between Abraham, Jr and Abraham, Sr in the early VA land records. (5) Added the descendants of Henry (son of Jacob, Sr). This information comes courtesy of Deborah Haskett. Thanks, Deborah! (6) Added information on the descendants of Samuel B. Hymer (son of Daniel Behymer and grandson of Abraham, Sr). This information comes courtesy of Allan Hymer. Thanks, Allan! (7) Added some information on the descendants Sarah (Beckelhymer) Snidow, wife of Jacob Snidow and daughter of Jacob, Sr. This information comes from Debbie Sellers. Thanks, Debbie! (8) Added some information on the descendants of Margaret Ann Custer, daughter of Christian Custer and Elizabeth Beckelhymer, the latter the daughter of Joseph Beckelhymer, son of John, Sr. This information comes from Marie Owensby. Thanks, Marie! (9) Added some information on the descendants of Robert and Ann (Beckelhymer) Gordon. The latter was the daughter of John Beckelhymer and Jane Meeker and granddaughter of Nathaniel Behymer and Anna Magdalena Ferguson. This information comes from Hal Jennings. Thanks, Hal! (10) Added the birth records for Clermont County, OH Behymers born in the 1867 to 1884 timeframe. I have included individuals whose father or mother was a Behymer/Pickleheimer, etc. (11) Added many Fulton County, IL marriages for the descendants of Michael France - these from the on-line search engine for the IL State Archives. (12) Updated 1820, 1830 and 1840 census data. For 1820 I added John Gray of Clermont County, OH (likely Levi's wife, Ester France's second husband), and corrected a page number for Christian Custer and Peter Robb (was: p. 35, is: p. 36). For 1830 I added Wm Pickleheimer of Hamilton County, OH, Barbara Behymer of Clermont County, OH (John, Jr's wife which I had missed previously by mistake - thanks Bev for pointing this out!), John Grey of Clermont County, OH, and corrected a page number on John Behymer (was: p. 219, is: p. 220). For 1840 I added Jno Gray of Fulton County, IL and William Williamson of Fountain County, IN. (13) Do to several requests from members of this mailing list, I have now broken out the early Behymers whose parents are unknown into a separate linked page entitled "Missing Links"on my web site. Previously I had used Levi, son of John, Jr as their father as a placeholder. In spite of the disclaimer I gave to clarify why I had done it that way, the new version should be a little clearer and I hope less confusing. (14) Added Merle Saunder's and Cliff Trimble's roster entries to the page of Behymer Researchers and Genealogists. (15) Linked Merle Saunder's web page on Chapman Behymer to my web page. (16) Added the genealogy of another one of my families - the Cowperthwaite family (ironically also of Fulton County, IL). On my next web page update, I will be working on documenting the descendants of Jacob, Jr, son of Abraham, Sr as well as Nathaniel, Sr, son of John, Sr. I have quite a bit of data on the descendants of these two that I have yet to enter into my database. I welcome comments, corrections, additions, etc. on this endeavor. John Charles Tippet Johntippet@home.com
