Sounds interesting. Would love to see it, especially if they are part of the same Behymers I belong to. RGas4315@aol.com is my address. Thank you very much for the offer Ruth
If anyone would like a copy of my article "Aunt Fannie Smith--The Famous Hostess of Sinking Mountain," originally publised in GEORGIA MAGAZINE in August 1971, an account of the colorful life of Fannie Picklesimer Kerby Smith (daughter of Abraham Picklesimer, Sr. and Eleanor Hooper), please contact me directly. I will send the article, to which I had added a brief outline of her direct Becklehymer-Picklesimer ancestry, as a word document. Please provide your direct email address as Rootsweb does not accept word documents. Michael Motes
Hi, Thanks for the offer. My add. is mike1228@aol.com Sharon
Yes, We "strongly" agree with Cousin David in El Paso that these special genealogy e-mail messages be used JUST for genealogy and family history of our Picklesimers, etc. That message was an unwelcome "shock!" Cousin Yvonne
Dear Cousins: I trust that whomever "Newgate" is will not be posting non-genealogy related topics on the list in the future. I have sent a private e-mail to this person requesting same. This kind of message is just like chain letters and phone calls from political parties. I hold strong opinions myself; however, I try not to impose them on others where they do not have the opportunity to decide whether they choose to discuss them or not. We have all decided to discuss family history on this RootsWeb sponsored list. RootsWeb has polices against this type of message as well. I might add that I have seven (7) daughters so I am not unsympathetic to the situation; however, I subscribe to numerous magazines so that I can be better informed about these matters. Thank you call, cousins for the incredible amount of family history that you have helped me with. I am a descendant of Lewis Preston Simer (Samuel, Abraham Adam) -- one of two family lines that decided to go the simplest family name possible! The government of Afghanistan is waging a war upon women. Since the Taliban took power in 1996, women have had to wear burqua and have been beaten and stoned in public for not having the proper attire, even if this means simply not having the mesh covering in front of their eyes. One woman was beaten to DEATH by an angry mob of fundamentalists for accidentally exposing her arm while she was driving. Another was stoned to death for trying to leave the country with a man that was not a relative. Women are not allowed to work or even go out in public without a male relative; professional women such as professors, translators, doctors, lawyers, artists and writers have been forced from their jobs and stuffed into their homes, so that depression is becoming so widespread that it has reached emergency levels. -------------------- There no way in such an extreme Islamic society to know the suicide rate with certainty, but relief workers are estimating that the suicide rate among women, who cannot find proper medication and treatment for severe depression and would rather take their lives than live in such conditions, has increased significantly. Homes where a woman is present must have their windows painted so that she can never be seen by outsiders. They must wear silent shoes so that they are never heard. Women live in fear of their lives for the slightest misbehavior. Because they cannot work, those without male relatives or husbands are either starving to death or begging on the street, even if they hold Ph.D.'s. There are almost no medical facilities available for women, and relief workers, in protest, have mostly left the country, taking medicine and psychologists and other things necessary to treat the sky-rocketing level of depression among women. At one of the rare hospitals for women, a reporter found still, nearly lifeless bodies lying motionless on top of beds, wrapped in their burqua, unwilling to speak, eat, or do anything, but slowly wasting away. Others have gone mad and were seen crouched in corners, perpetually rocking or crying, most of them in fear. One doctor is considering, when what little medication that is left finally runs out, leaving these women in front of the president's residence as a form of peaceful protest. It is at the point where the term 'human rights violation' has become a serious understatement. Husbands have the power of life and death over their women relatives, especially their wives, but an angry mob has just as much right to stone or beat a woman, often to death, for exposing an inch of flesh or offending them in the slightest way. Women enjoyed relative freedom, to work, dress generally as they wanted, and drive and appear in public alone until only 1996. The rapidity of this transition is the main reason for the depression and suicide; women who were once educators or doctors or simply used to basic human freedoms are now severely restricted and treated as sub-human in the name of right-wing fundamentalist Islam. It is not their tradition or 'culture', but is alien to them, and it is extreme even for those cultures where fundamentalism is the rule. Everyone has a right to a tolerable human existence, even if they are women in a Muslim country. If we can threaten military force in Kosovo in the name of human rights for the sake of ethnic Albanians, citizens of the world can certainly express peaceful outrage at the oppression, murder and injustice committed against women by the Taliban. STATEMENT: In signing this, we agree that the current treatment of women in Afghanistan is completely UNACCEPTABLE and deserves support and action by the United Nations and that the current situation overseas will not be tolerated. Women's Rights is not a small issue anywhere and it is UNACCEPTABLE for women in 2000 to be treated as sub-human and so much as property. Equality and human decency is a RIGHT not a freedom, whether one lives in Afghanistan or elsewhere. 1) Suzanne Dathe, Grenoble, France 2) Laurence COMPARAT, Grenoble,France 3) Philippe MOTTE, Grenoble, France 4) Jok FERRAND, Mont St Martin, France 5) Emmanuelle PIGNOL, St Martin d'Heres, FRANCE 6) Marie GAUTHIER, Grenoble, FRANCE 7) Laurent VESCALO, Grenoble,FRANCE 8) Mathieu MOY, St Egreve, FRANCE 9) Bernard BLANCHET, Mont St Martin, FRANCE 10) Tassadite FAVRIE, Grenoble, FRANCE 11) Loic GODARD, St Ismier, FRANCE 12) Benedicte PASCAL, Grenoble, FRANCE 13) Khedaidja BENATIA, Grenoble, FRANCE 14) Marie-Therese LLORET, Grenoble,FRANCE 15) Benoit THEAU, Poitiers, FRANCE 16) Bruno CONSTANTIN, Poitiers, FRANCE 17) Christian COGNARD, Poitiers, FRANCE 18) Robert GARDETTE, Paris, FRANCE 19) Claude CHEVILLARD, Montpellier, FRANCE 20) Gilles FREISS, Montpellier, FRANCE 21) Patrick AUGEREAU, Montpellier, FRANCE. 22) Jean IMBERT, Marseille, FRANCE 23) Jean-Claude MURAT, Toulouse, France 24) Anna BASSOLS, Barcelona, Spain 25) Mireia DUNACH, Barcelona, Spain 26) Michel VILLAZ, Grenoble, France 27) Pages Frederique, Dijon, France 28) Rodolphe FISCHMEISTER, Chatenay-Malabry, France 29) Francois BOUTEAU, Paris, France 30) Patrick PETER, Paris, France 31) Lorenza RADICI, Paris, France 32) Monika Siegenthaler, Bern, Switzerland 33) Mark Philp, Glasgow, Scotland 34) Tomas Andersson, Stockholm, Sweden 35) Jonas Eriksson, Stockholm, Sweden 36) Karin Eriksson, Stockholm, Sweden 37) Ake Ljung, Stockholm, Sweden 38) Carina Sedlmayer, Stockholm, Sweden 39) Rebecca Uddman, Stockholm, Sweden 40) Lena Skog, Stockholm, Sweden 41) Micael Folke, Stockholm, Sweden 42) Britt-Marie Folke, Stockholm, Sweden 43) Birgitta Schuberth, Stockholm, Sweden 44) Lena Dahl, Stockholm, Sweden 45) Ebba Karlsson, Stockholm, Sweden 46) Jessica Carlsson, Vaxjo, Sweden 47) Sara Blomquist, Vaxjo, Sweden 48) Magdalena Fosseus, Vaxjo, Sweden 49) Charlotta Langner, Goteborg, Sweden 50) Andrea Egedal, Goteborg, Sweden 51) Lena Persson, Stockholm, Sweden 52) Magnus Linder, Umea ,Sweden 53) Petra Olofsson, Umea, Sweden 54) Caroline Evenbom, Vaxjo, Sweden 55) Asa Pettersson, Grimsas, Sweden 56) Jessica Bjork, Grimsas, Sweden 57) Linda Ahlbom Goteborg, Sweden 58) Jenny Forsman, Boras, Sweden 59) Nina Gunnarson, Kinna, Sweden 60) Andrew Harrison, New Zealand 61) Bryre Murphy, New Zealand 62) Claire Lugton, New Zealand 63) Sarah Thornton, New Zealand 64) Rachel Eade, New Zealand 65) Magnus Hjert, London, UK 67) Madeleine Stamvik, Hurley, UK 68) Susanne Nowlan, Vermont, USA 69) Lotta Svenby, Malmoe, Sweden 70) Adina Giselsson, Malmoe, Sweden 71) Anders Kullman, Stockholm, Sweden 72) Rebecka Swane, Stockholm,Sweden 73) Jens Venge, Stockholm, Sweden 74) Catharina Ekdahl, Stockholm, Sweden 75) Nina Fylkegard, Stockholm, Sweden 76) Therese Stedman, Malmoe, Sweden 77) Jannica Lund, Stockholm, Sweden 78) Douglas Bratt 79) Mats Lofstrom, Stockholm, Sweden 80) Li Lindstrom, Sweden 81) Ursula Mueller, Sweden 82) Marianne Komstadius, Stockholm, Sweden 83) Peter Thyselius, Stockholm, Sweden 84) Gonzalo Oviedo, Quito, Ecuador 85) Amalia Romeo, Gland, Switzerland 86) Margarita Restrepo, Gland, Switzerland 87) Eliane Ruster, Crans p.C., Switzerland 88) Jennifer Bischoff-Elder, Hong Kong 89) Azita Lashgari, Beirut, Lebanon 90) Khashayar Ostovany, New York, USA 91) Lisa L Miller, Reno NV 92) Danielle Avazian, Los Angeles, CA 93) Sara Risher, Los Angeles, Ca. 94) Melanie London, New York, NY 95) Susan Brownstein , Los Angeles, CA 96) Steven Raspa, San Francisco, CA 97) Margot Duane, Ross, CA 98) Natasha Darnall, Los Angeles, CA 99) Candace Brower, Evanston, IL 100) James Kjelland, Evanston, IL 101) Michael Jampole, Beach Park, IL, USA 102) Diane Willis, Wilmette, IL, USA 103) Sharri Russell, Roanoke, VA, USA 104) Faye Cooley, Roanoke, VA, USA 105) Celeste Thompson, Round Rock, TX, USA 106) Sherry Stang, Pflugerville, TX, USA 107) Amy J. Hi, Cheryl: Here is some of my Behymer Kansas info, but I don't have any recent 1900s stuff, so there still could be a connection, if you could backtrack a bit more. Solomon Behymer (1819-1917) married Nancy Wagner (abt 1818-1875) Their children: Francis Marion Behymer, b. 1840 Andrew Behymer, b. 1842 Nancy Behymer, b. 1843 James Madison Behymer, b. 1845 Oliver Perry Behymer, 1848 Delilah Behymer, b. 1849 Emmaline Behymer, b. 1852 Mary Elizabeth Behymer, b. 1854 Malinda Leanah Behymer, b. 1856 Solomon John Behymer, b. 1860 They were all born in Ohio, except Solomon John was born in Arkansas (I can't figure out why they went to Ark. as they were only there a very short time. Something to do with the Civil War, maybe?) >From the info that I have James, Oliver, Delilah, Emmaline and Mary as well as the father all lived in Kansas at some time. This was when they were adults and the father was widowed and lived at various times with different children. Of the boys: James Madison married Amanda Hulse. In 1885 according to a decennial Census of Lindsborg, McPherson Co., KS: Behymer, J.M., 39 A.L., 33 Jennie, 12 Wilthie, 9 Rettie, 8 Oswald J., 5 Gilmore, 4 Earle, 2 The last four children were all born in Kansas. We visited Lindsborg, Kansas 2 years ago. It is a charming little Swedish town. Another thing that baffles me is that at the time the Behymers lived there it was almost entirely Swedish. This family is not Swedish and must have been out of place there. James Madison eventually settled in Eastern Washington with some of his family. I have located a grgrgrandson there. James divorced his wife. Oliver Perry Behymer was living in McPherson Co., KS in 1917. He had the following children: Charles (1900 & 1910 census living in Hayes, Reno Co., KS) Reuben Harry Carrie (1900 census in McPherson Co., KS) Dea Leo Delilah Behymer married Andrew Curtis. They lived and raised their children in McPherson Co., KS and are buried there. Mary Behymer married Wm. Thomas Davis. They lived in Trego Co., KS for a few years where a couple children were born. Then moved west to Washington. This is my line. All for now. Let me know if you discover a connection. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU. Sallye Gundy Martin << Just in case you weren't feeling too old today, this will certainly change things. Each year the staff at Beloit College in Wisconsin puts together a list to try to give the faculty a sense of the mindset of that year's incoming freshmen. Here is this year's list: The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1982. They have no meaningful recollection of the Reagan Era and probably did not know he had ever been shot. They were prepubescent when the Persian Gulf War was waged. Black Monday 1987 is as significant to them as the Great Depression. There has been only one Pope. They were 11 when the Soviet Union broke apart and do not remember the Cold War. They have never feared a nuclear war. They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up. Tianamen Square means nothing to them. Their lifetime has always included AIDS. Bottle caps have always been screw off and plastic. Atari predates them, as do vinyl albums. The expression "you sound like a broken record" means nothing to them. They have never owned a record player. They have likely never played Pac Man and have never heard of Pong. They may have never heard of an 8 track. The Compact Disc was introduced when they were 1 year old. As far as they know, stamps have always cost about 33 cents. They have always had an answering machine. Most have never seen a TV set with only 13 channels, nor have they seen a black-and-white TV. They have always had cable. There has always been VCRs, but they have no idea what BETA is. They cannot fathom not having a remote control. They were born the year that Walkmen were introduced by Sony. Roller-skating has always meant inline for them. Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show. They have no idea when or why Jordache jeans were cool. Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave. They have never seen Larry Bird play. They never took a swim and thought about Jaws. The Vietnam War is as ancient history to them as W.W.I, W.W.II and the Civil War. They have no idea that Americans were ever held hostage in Iran. They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are. They don't know who Mork was or where he was from. They never heard "Where's the beef?", "I'd walk a mile for a Camel," or "De plane, de plane!" They do not care who shot J.R. and have no idea who J.R. is. The Titanic was found? They thought we always knew where it was. Michael Jackson has always been white. Kansas, Chicago, Boston, America, and Alabama are places, not groups. McDonalds never came in styrofoam containers. There has always been MTV. They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter. ******* Do you feel old yet? Pass this on to the other old fogies. >>
