    3. Hi Cathy MY LIST: (!!!) such as it is) Birth/Baptism Photocopies of the Parish Register will sometimes show date of birth/ adddress and occupations of the parents. Banns/Marriage Licence Marriage cert/ write up in the local rag? Death?Obituary ? Burial - date & place Headstone - photo? Military Service Records/National Defence Muster Lists Local Library Card Index? Local History Society (who was their Lord & master?) (does their home still exist- [photo) ( their occcupations) Local Museums - has anyone in the Family deposited letters/medals/ postcards/photos etc? Court Appearances Inquests _ some people appear as Witnesses- not necessarily the deceased! Newspaper Reports (not just obits but any events such as visit by Royalty, opening of a building /railway which they might have attended) All adds to your knowledge of the Family and their lives. Emigration ( whenever they seem to disappear check Aust/Canada/ New Zealand particularly then America) Wills ?Letters of Administration? Workhouse?Asylum ?Records (Admission Register, Creed Register, Departure Register) The Creed Registers are particularly useful - I found Dates of Admission, Religion, Dates of Death, Place of Burial, Nearest Relative and how much tobacco allowed between certain dates! Black Sheep Register _ (google for this) Employers- I found it useful to search the censii for their employers. I found that the address of one who had a Town House in London matched the address on a marriage cert. Obviously the Master took his children's nurse and a virile male servant to London with him from Connington Hunts and they gave his address on the marriage cert. when they married. I'm sure others will be able to add to the List - it is amazing what has survived! Hope this helps a little Regards Marlene ----- Original Message ----- From: <AudreyJoyceMcC@aol.com> To: <BEDFORD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, June 10, 2006 7:36 AM Subject: Re: [BDF] Christenings > > > Thanks for that, Sarah... > > If they were your ordianary 'midleling' Poor folk - sometimes, there is > not > even an 18th C Poor Law Certificate for them if they changed villages > [Does > anyone know the time scale when those Poor Law Certificates came into use > & when > they finished?] > > There are other record bits which are easy to overlook - all males aged > 17 - > 55 were listed in 1803 on the National Defence Muster list ,,,the North > Bedfordshire lists are published by the BHRS but those south of Bedford > have not > survived :0( > I do not know if Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire & Hertfordshire have > lists? > > No one in my family left a Will until well into the 20th C as far as I > know - > but I have found a house-clearance sale for my x gt grandad in the > mid-19th C > at http://blars.adlibsoft.com/beginner/indnms.html > > Do people know of any other records that might be otherwise over-looked? > > cathy > > > > > ==== BEDFORD Mailing List ==== > To do a search of the Bedford Archives go to > http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl > Enter Bedford in the box >
