Good Afternoon Researching the LARKINS name back from present day Nuneaton (Warwickshire) has led me to Old Warden/Biggleswade and to a George LARKINS born about 1806 in Biggleswade. From the evidence of the censuses and IGI I have come to the conclusion that George must have been baptised 01/02/1806 to William and Martha LARKINS (nee HAYNES) who were married 25/02/1805 in Biggleswade. I believe that William LARKINS married again (presumably following the death of Martha) on 03/04/1809 to Elizabeth RHODES. This couple had children who included Elizabeth, baptised 1811, and William baptised 1812. The latter two were found in the 1861 census in Biggleswade and I have positively linked them to George's son James LARKINS (baptised 28/10/1838 in Biggleswade). I am now struggling with the birth/baptism of William LARKINS in the latter part of the 18th century as there appears to be alternative parents for him - either George and Elizabeth or Charles and Sarah. I have also found a possible William LARKINS in the 1851 census but, as yet, there is insufficient information to either rule him in or out as George LARKINS father. I am therefore wondering whether there might be someone else researching the LARKINS name who might have found out more than myself and who would be prepared to assist me in some way? Regards Richard
Hi Richard A Martha Larkins was buried in Biggleswade on 7 Feb 1808, so your remarriage idea looks sound. The William who was in the 1851 census was aged 67, a retired draper, born Biggleswade ie birth 1783/4 In 1851 George was a general smith. Theres a burial of a William Larkins in Biggleswade on 10 Feb 1846 age 64 ie born 1781/2. But burial ages are notoriously unreliable and census ages are often not a lot better. In 1841 George was a blacksmith. There was another family in Biggleswade headed by William Larkins 55 blacksmith with Elizabeth 25, William 25 also a blacksmith, and John 20, all born in Beds. Age 55 in 1841 covered an age range of 55-59, which would tie in with the burial in 1846. There is only one controlled extract on the IGI at around the right time in Biggleswade William christened 8 Feb 1782, the son of George & Elizabeth. There are other member submissions, some of which claim this William as marrying someone else, but as often with member submissions they are completely unreliable and you should check the parish register. Was Williams occupation at Georges christening mentioned, as blacksmith seems to be a family occupation? Similarly with the 1782 christening. But it must be a possibility that the retired draper born Biggleswade was the 1782 christening, and blacksmith William was born elsewhere in Beds. Unfortunately my CDrom has developed a read error half way through one of the Biggleswade pieces, and I cant find the other William in 1841 Hopefully Rogers data may be able to help you resolve the issue Regards David RICHARD POWERS <richard.powers@btopenworld.com> a écrit : Good Afternoon Researching the LARKINS name back from present day Nuneaton (Warwickshire) has led me to Old Warden/Biggleswade and to a George LARKINS born about 1806 in Biggleswade. >From the evidence of the censuses and IGI I have come to the conclusion that George must have been baptised 01/02/1806 to William and Martha LARKINS (nee HAYNES) who were married 25/02/1805 in Biggleswade.
