Allan, I'm having another go. Sometimes the simplest answers are the best. If you go to Google search for Stagsden Smith. The second response should be titled Arthur Beckett 1886. If you go the bottom of the page you will find the family of James Smith and Mary Semarke. There is no son James, and the father James (Snr) died in Nov 1850. This confirms my earlier findings. So I don't think James and Mary are the parents. I suspect the parent are Thomas and Caroline and the son was either christened as Thomas or incorrectly recorded in 1845.
