    3. Do you mind if I repeat this question? Does anyone else have an 1851 pensioner in ther families? May I draw your attention to the 1851 census for Milton Ernest (HO107/1751/175A) where William Cox aged 78 is described as a pensioner? How on earth did an Ag Lab get to be a pensioner in 1851? A pension from whom? Thanks Pat (Burke)

    3. Soldiers and sailors wounded on active service and unable to work were awarded pensions. Some charities also made regular payments that might be described as pensions. You may want to look at his employment history for as far back as you can. 3. There are a lot of pensioners in the census - which could be explained in several ways: They could be a Chelsea Pensioner (look at military records) or They could have been left money in the form of an annuity, either by an employer or relative (in which case you need to research his extended family looking at Wills etc.) or It might just be the enumerators way of recording that they were in receipt of Parish Relief (in which case you need to look at any poor relief papers in the parish) Hope this helps Debbie Patricia Ann Burke wrote: > Do you mind if I repeat this question? > > Does anyone else have an 1851 pensioner in ther families? > > May I draw your attention to the 1851 census for Milton Ernest (HO107/1751/175A) where William Cox aged 78 is described as a pensioner?
