Sue, So, I presume you can only follow Ephraim's maternal lines and you already know his mother and all her siblings and his grandparents who raised him. Try the Hugh Wallis Batch number site http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm Scroll down to countries and follow the prompts to Bedford / Towns. This will show the available records by timeframe. Click on a batch number, and you can search by just one criteria. For example, you could check for all children named Ephraim in Ampthill, or all children with father named Ephraim or all Ephraim marriages. If you use just Underwood, you will get all records for that surname in Ampthill. But remember, it's established church not non-conformist, and depends on them being church goers. Parish records also cut out with compulsory registration after 1837. Then you need FreeBMD or quarterly indexes. But you can get all the family together from census records, so they are easier. Peter
