Listers Am looking for a 4 year old child who was sent to Australia in 1881 [alone?]; he doesn't appear to be on the 1881 census in England. Would there be a Census record of ships passengers? To confuse things further, we are not sure of his birth name as it appears he may have been illegitimate and later took the name of his 'adopted' parents in Victoria. They came from Aylesbury originally [WOODBRIDGE/ROADNIGHT]. The adopted child became Arthur WOODBRIDGE but may have been born Arthur McDONALD [?] - Arthur went AWOL during the Great War for some months and apparently found his birth parent/s but was turned away by them according to what he told his children. If anyone has a suggestion where he could be found, as we do not know what ship he was on in 1881, and ships records seem so hard to search anyway, it would be a great help. We have been relying, perhaps, too much on this 'Aylesbury connection' which may well be a red herring! cathy
Hi Try this link: http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/index_search.asp?searchid=23 You can search this list for names of passengers who boarded ships to Victoria, Australia from overseas ports (including New Zealand) between 1852 and 1923. These passengers were 'unassisted', meaning that their passage was not subsidised by government.
