    3. Thank you sincerely for the info on David Wells and Martha ? I had come across this, and at first had them linked as parents of George, but then disconnected them as the eldest son, James was b ca 1836, and per 1841 Census George was b May1840, being 11months of age, this was prior to their marriage in 1841. Also, 1861 Census Lists Sarah HAYNES, Lodger, Widow, but in 1871 Census, Sarah is listed as mother of Martha, blind, dau Bertha is living with them. Martha could be a 2nd wife of David, haven't found any indication of a 1st wife as yet. Also, Sarah Haynes being mother of Martha doesnt fit with family knowledge, but then again, if Martha was 2nd wife, it very well could fit. 1. RE: [BDF] Hamlet of Ireland
    2. David
    3. Hi Sandee I don’t think the Dec 1841 marriage you quote is the same David Wells as the one in the 1841 with wife Martha. In fact I don’t think that the David Wells and Martha Stevens who were among the 8 people on that registration page actually married each other. The 1851 census has a Southill family, David Wells 34 b Stanford; Elizabeth Wells 33 b Campton; Fanny Wright dau 13 b Campton; Charles Wells 8; MaryAnn Wells 4; George Wells 1. One of the parties to the 4 marriages on that particular page of the register, other than Martha Stevens, is Elizabeth Wright. I think she was probably the one that married David Wells in 1841. On the same page was also William Odell – in 1851 he is living in Shefford age 30 with a wife Martha 31 with an eldest child of 7. Whilst it would mean buying the marriage certificate to prove it one way or another I suspect Martha Stevens married William Odell. (of the other 4 names on the page a member submission on the IGI has Sarah Dilley! marrying John Smith, and the 1851 shows a William and MaryAnn Roberts in Old Warden). The IGI (controlled extract) has the christening of Martha Haynes at Campton (which included Shefford) on 16 Feb 1812, the daughter of Thomas and Sarah, which fits with her being the Martha who married David Wells, and who were probably the parents of at least George in the 1841 census. There’s a marriage on the IGI in the adjoining parish of Meppershall on 26 Dec 1835 between David Wells and Sarah Simmonds. I cannot see these in 1851 and the date would be right for James’s birth, but I cannot find a burial of a Sarah in either Meppershall or Campton (although there is a Sarah Wells age 25 in neighbouring Clifton in 1839). This is something that the marriage entry in the parish register would put straight, but it doesn’t resolve your family tradition of an Odell connection. The actual 1851 census entry for David reads born “Herts Inksworth” (Ancestry have indexed it as Inkiurrth !) which when spoken with a yokel accent I interpret as being Hinxworth. I’ve had another look at the 1841 entry – it’s possible that George’s age could be 4 months rather than 11, which would then fit with an entry on FreeBMD of the registration of birth of a George Wells in Biggleswade registration district in March 1841 vol 6 page 56. Ideally you need to obtain the birth cert for George, which can be done online, or alternatively to check for a baptism of George in 1841 and the earlier marriage of his parents, from the microfilm of Campton parish register which would be available from your nearest LDS Family History Centre, or by approaching BLARS http://www.bedfordshire.gov.uk/ Whether David Wells had an Odell connection in Herts remains to be seen, but I cannot see any Odell link with George Odell in Shefford.
