    3. Hi Marie The IGI is an index, made up of two components, controlled extracts from parish registers which are reliable, and member submissions which are anything but reliable. You have to sort the wheat from the chaff! If you know the parish you are researching and use the following link to access the IGI the chaff has been winnowed out http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountryEngland.htm#PageTitle Any IGI entry with “about” as the date means either that the LDS member can’t find, or as is often the case hasn’t bothered to look for, the event in question. That’s why the marriage of William and Sarah has two dates: 1 Nov 1777 which is extracted, and “about 1797” which is garbage submitted by a member. With an actual marriage date of 1777 the births of William and Sarah have to be much earlier than the “about 1772” and “about 1766” you quote from the IGI member submissions. (the 1797 entry on the IGI may well have been submitted by a descendant of your 4xg grandfather - born 1798 - the submitter merely assumed they were married the year before Richard's birth, without checking to see if there earlier children). Narrowing down the baptisms you find William and Sarah have the 10 children you list, including William christened 1783. The IGI has a marriage in Millbrook on 28 Oct 1816 between William Woodland and Nanny Underwood, followed by a string of children of William and Ann from 1817 onwards. There were burials in Millbrook of William Woodland age 53 on 23 Dec 1807 Sarah Woodland age 58 on 7 Jan 1816 John Woodland age 55 on 17 Oct 1821 Ann Woodland age 73 on 20 Jan 1830 So the 1817 marriage was not on the face of it the William who married in 1777, and is likely therefore to have been his son christened 1783. You would need to check the parish register to see if there was any further detail which might help to identify him – names of witnesses for example, as at this time fathers’ names were not usually included. I’ve tried looking for him in the 1851 census but can’t see him - there was a widow Ann Woodland age 60 living in Yorkshire with a birthplace of Millbrook, so it’s possible they emigrated to Yorkshire after the births of the children in Millbrook. Were William born c 1754 and John born c1766 brothers? They might have been – there were no earlier Woodland entries in Millbrook parish register, so it doesn’t appear as though they were a Millbrook family. The IGI (controlled extracts!) shows baptisms at the right times in Asley Guise only 4 miles from Millbrook which would be worth investigating. You would need to check the marriage entries of both William and John to see if the parish register gives their residence as being a parish other than the one in which they were married (John may have married Ann Catton in 1788 in Lidlington, a mile from Millbrook towards Aspley Guise). But the IGI should be treated for what it is – an index; with all entries being checked with the parish register where extra information will be available. You also get burial information which can be invaluable, which you don’t get on the IGI (although you can check on http://www.familyhistoryonline.net for these). The LDS has filmed virtually all parish registers in Beds, and they are available on order from your nearest LDS Family History Centre – www.familysearch.org has a list of FHCs. Regards David H N <h.napier@gmail.com> a écrit : I have run into a huge brickwall trying to figure out the family of my GGGG grandfather. His name is RICHARD WOODLAND, born 21 Jan 1798, Millbrook, Bedfordshire. He is one of 10 children, birthyears of the children are 1778 to 1800 according to the IGI. His parents names (IGI) are WILLIAM WOODLAND born 1772? and SARAH LITCHFIELD born 1766?, married 1 Nov.1777/97?(IGI) Millbrook. I found a JOHN WOODLAND and ANN, also resided in Millbrook, the birth years of their children are 1792-1804. I also found a WILLIAM WOODLAND born 1790 and ANN born 1792, also from Millbrook. their children's birthyears are 1817 to 1835?, all information from IGI and freebmd. I would like to find out if and how the JOHN and WILLIAM and WILLIAM are related. of if the IGI has the names and dates mixed up or completely wrong and the 2 Williams are one and the same person. Possibility of John and one of the William's being brothers? the childrens names according to IGI and freebmd are as follows: CHILDREN of 1772 WILLIAM: THOMAS,KITTY,WILLIAM,ELIZABETH,SARAH,MARTHA,ANN, MARY, RICHARD,SUSANNAH.
