    3. 1861 census shows a James Dudley aged 8 in Marston, son of Joseph and Ann. IGI has a George James Dudley son of Joseph and Ann baptism in 1855 which might be him. This is the only child of Joseph and Ann who appears on the IGI yet there is another son, Joseph 15, living with them in 1861. Perhaps they were none too scrupulous about baptising their children. 3. James Dudley was born to Joseph Dudley and Ann Parrott who married in Marston Moretaine 25 Nov 1855. James was baptised in Marston Moretaine 25 Nov 1855, but the Parish Register gives his birth as July 23. In 1851 Ann Parrott and her son Joseph were lodging with John Dudley & his son Joseph whom she married a year after John Dudley's death. Joseph Parrot was baptised in Marston 2 Jul 1848 (IGI). In 1861 and 1871 Censuses, Joseph becomes Joseph Dudley, so it's possible he was really the son of Joseph who married Ann Parrott. Remember baptism in church (or otherwise) was not compulsory and (from the Religious census of 1851) only about a third or so of the population actually attended any place of worship. In Beds, Methodism was strong, so was Baptist membership, in some places a lot stronger than the Church of England.
