His first wife Elizabeth, born Gamlingay Cambs, appears with Thomas in the 1861 census, and the 1871 shows his second wife Elizabeth born Wellhead, just outside Hitchin, Herts. There's only one burial of an Elizabeth Payne/Pain(e) in Beds 1861-5 - Dec quarter 1863 in Biggleswade registration district, in which both Henlow and Clifton lie, which would fit with a remarriage to Elizabeth 2 in 1864. Thomas and Elizabeth were both alive in 1901, still living in Clifton, where they'd appeared in all censuses from 1871. http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl shows an Elizabeth age 82 dying in the June quarter 1921 in Biggleswade registration district, which may be here. The only other family members with Thomas and Elizabeth in 1851 were sons George 10, William 8; Charles 2; Thomas 9 mths. No mention of any grandchildren??? Thomas appears to have been one of three children of William and Mary baptised on 27 Sept 1821; William age 6, Mary age 2 and Thomas. Up to 1901 his birth was pretty consistently 1820/1, although he aged badly in 1901 when he gave 84 as his age. 1816 seems to be too early.
