    3. Michelle, I have spent many hours on this. I understand that it's very difficult, but it's going to need that sort of commitment. Following on the 1881 census image that I sent you of what I think is the family, I traced that same family to 1891 and 1901. In 1881 and 1891 they are listed as Hooton, but in 1901 they have been mistranscribed as Horton. And here's a lesson for all researchers. The spelling might be different depending on which supplier you use. Ancestry may be different to 1901 Site and FindMyPast may have a third variant. At least FindMyPast will fix it. Richard Hooton and Sarah had six sons E.G c1870, William c1875, Frederick I c1876, Ernest A c1877, Richardson c1883 and Leonard c1888. By 1891, E.G. looks to have left home. By 1901 William too is absent. You indicated a suspicion he may be at Boer War. One of the other brothers is also a soldier. The father being a policeman and the sons in military indicate a history of service, consistent with the later distinguished career of William. This should get you going. Try and trace the absent sons and follow up with possible marriages. You should be able to find some current day descendants in UK. Peter
