Thank you to Peter, Peter and Bev for replying to my query. I have tried every which way to find William MAN/MANN/MANNS on the Bedford Gaol database. I have seen the original ships indent for the 1840 "Maitland" voyage on Ancestry.au where it shows it had 6 convicts who were tried at Bedford Quarter Sessions between January and December 1839 (this is where I originally discovered my William MANN may have been a convict). I found two of them on the Bedford Gaol database - a William FELLS and a Thomas PRICE who were transferred to hulks at Woolwich. The others are a mystery, including my William and James SKIPPER. Maybe they were transferred to the hulks immediately after their trial. Bev, I would order the LDS film if my local LDS FH Centre had not shut up shop. Looks like I might have to wait until they get enough volunteers to open up again. I have researched another convict ancestor who was tried at the Kent assizes. I found that his trial papers were at Kew Archives and I was lucky enough to have a distant "cousin" who made the trip there for me and copied the papers. Maybe William's are there too. Might have to follow that one up. I had also emailed the local libraries in Maidstone and asked them if they could find anything on the trial - they were very helpful and managed to find a brief mention for me. Peter, William's parents (according to his death certificate) were Robert MANN and Mary Ann SIZELAND. I found their marriage in East Winch, Norfolk in 1809 on Pallots Marriage Index some years ago. On William's sons's birth certificate he gives his place of birth as "Grimstead" England (which is is Wiltshire). I am fairly sure that it was written incorrectly and should have been "Grimston" England (which is in Norfolk). I am also fairly certain that Robert and Mary A MAN living in Grimston in 1841 are William's parents. That's about as far as my research goes at the moment. I am currently transcribing Parish Registers for East Winch (yes, I did find Robert and Mary Ann's Banns and Marriage) and will move on to Grimston next to try to find William's birth. Thanks for everyone's help and if any there are any more suggestions they would be most welcome. Cheers Wendy Sorry to be so long winded :-) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Booth" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, May 30, 2008 4:16 PM Subject: Re: [BDF] Bedford Quarter Session Records > Wendy, > > Your "trail" through Google reveals you have been doing quite a bit of > work trying to track down William Mann without much success. > > I was going to suggest NSW State Archives but I see you are in > Queensland.
