    3. Two queries: 1) in respect to Ann Stringer..#10 in generation Three, what does the 1817 - BASTARDY actually mean? Is Thomas Wagstaff agreeing to look after Ann or is he owning to be the father of a child born while James Hytt is incarcerated?. and 2) Do you know where James Hytt was transported to and on what vessel. I searched the convict details for New South Wales and Tasmania but cant seem to trace him. 3. George, Sorry I've been a bit quiet. My daughter gets on the computer and I can't get a go. If you search Google using "bastardy bond" in inverted commas you will get some good definitions. Basically, what we now class as social security was the responsibility of the parish where they were born. So you have Poor Law Unions, Workhouses etc. I have seen cases where a widow and children where put on a cart and sent back to their parish of origin, because their new parish denied any responsibility for caring for them after the breadwinner died. As for James Hytt, we don't know what happened and it may be very difficult. I had exactly the same occurrence with my Cox ancestors from Bedford. The son stole a turkey and took it home to feed the family. Both were sentenced to transportation - the son for stealing and the father for receiving. Both went initially to the Hulks in the Thames because the gaols were full. There they would have waited for the transport ships. Imagine the conditions. The Hulks were ships that had outlived their usefulness and were leaky and rotting. Imagine the water and sanitary conditions with 400-500 prisoners on board. If you thought a three month trip to Australia was perilous, it was probably a luxury compared to the hulks. As for my family, I found the son in Australian convict records, but could never find his father. I surmised he died on the hulks and eventually was able to find a record proving this. He was deemed to ill for transportation and left to die. I will have to look back and see if I can locate the records of death on the hulks. But I think it was a ship by ship basis, so we may need a ship's name. It's also possible that he was transported elsewhere. Australia was not the only destination for transportation. I know Canada and the Caribbean were also used and perhaps there were others. Peter
