Hello Mary There are quite a few Holt births at Holme on Spalding Moor which must be connected to Elizabeth Holt. Its quite unusual for someone to travel that distance around 1800 unless she went to stay with a relative in Odell, so unfortunately the bigger mystery remains unsolved at present I would think of her kindly as she was bringing up her Holt grandchildren who otherwise would have been in the workhouse. Hi I am always curious as to WHY one might say that people didn't travel around England at a particular time? Folk were crossing to Europe, emigrating to the States and other colonies, trading & fighting battles so why should we assume they didn't pop across a few Counties?. In 1803 Bedfordshire men were sent away to training camps for military purposes and sometimes wives & families followed. The same thing happened in other Counties because of threats from France. There are several books and online sites which give historical timelines and you need to take into account social and economic circumstances. One example might be the importation of Scottish stonemasons to assist Ireland with rebuilding after a natural disaster in the late 1700s. Depending on their occupation people moved with their employers to or from Country estates as servants etc. Again, depending on their status they moved for education, employment or because of some particular family circumstance. I was misled very early in my research by someone who advised me that folk very rarely moved further than 5 miles from their home village! It took me sometime to realise this was far from accurate! My families certainly travelled <1803> and not a Gypsy among them! IANAE, but travel seems to have been difficult, dangerous and expensive, with fewer and poorer quality roads and less reliable means of transport. We do know that some of the reasonably affluent did travel, and that people were prepared to walk far further than modern school kids, but with physically onerous work a necessity for many, there would have been relatively few with sufficient time and energy to wander very far without very good reason to do so. Skilled craftsmen moved quite extensively during the middle ages but the Reformation drastically affected such things as the building of new church properties. I think you may find that there was geographic mobility of skilled craft- and tradespeople, but far less for agricultural workers, and until the first world war, England was predominantly an agricultural society. News reports are usually of the unexpected, people doing unusual things, so reports of travel occur *because* travel is unusual. But my gt-grandmother took *two* long sea journeys to S.
