Can anyone help with the family of Sarah Tustin Randall? She was born in Biggleswade about 1853 or 1854, the daughter of William Randall (bp B'wade Aug 1819, bur B'wade Jul 1911) and Charlotte (born Ossington, Ntt 1830/1, bur B'wade Dec 1902). She married Alexander D Fraser some time before the 1881 census. In Free BMD I found - Marriages Sep 1880 Cartwright George Biggleswade 3b 552 FRASER Alexander Donald Biggleswade 3b 552 Lincoln Eliza Biggleswade 3b 552 Taylor Sarah Tuslin Biggleswade 3b 552 - which seems to indicate that Sarah was married previously, or was a stepdaughter of William Randall? There is nothing in FreeBMD to help clarify. >From FreeBMD - Deaths Mar 1931 Fraser Sarah T 77 Rochford 4a 994 I need help especially with the 1901 census, does anyone have access to a transcription other than that of Ancestry? Any other assistance with this family will be gratefully received. In the 1861 census Sarah is aged 7, with parents William 41 and Charlotte 31. I have not found her in the 1871 census. I think the marriage of William Randall to Charlotte Single is a red herring, the ages are given on the IGI and both are completely wrong. However ... I note that the 1861 census gives Sarah's name as Taylor, not Randall (and relationship daughter-in-law) also that the second child is only three months old, suggesting a remarriage around 1860ish. The 1851 census (Ancestry) gives:- Name: Charlotte Tustin Age: 21 Estimated birth year: abt 1830 Relation: Daughter Mother's Name: Elizabeth Gender: Female Where born: Chington, Nottinghamshire, England Civil parish: Assington County/Island: Nottinghamshire Country: England Registration district: Southwell Sub-registration district: Kneesal ED, institution, or vessel: 21 and 14b Household schedule number: 33 Household Members: Name Age Elizabeth Tustin 58 Charlotte Tustin 21 John Bee 9 Henry Holland 22 FreeBMD gives Marriages Mar 1853 (>99%) Eyre Jane Southwell 7b 333 SHERRATT Henry Southwell 7b 333 TAYLOR James Southwell 7b 333 TUSTIN Charlotte Southwell 7b 333 and Marriages Jun 1860 (>99%) Dobson Sarah W. London 1c 102 Poole Arthur George W.London 1c 102 Randall William W London 1c 102 TAYLOR Charlotte W. London 1c 102 This last marriage is indeed the correct one, as Ancestry's LMA collection gives ... June 12th 1860, St Andrew, Holborn William RANDALL, full, bachelor, gardener, Chancery Lane, William Randall, gardener Charlotte TAYLOR, full, spinster, parish of Biggleswade in the county of Bedford, William TUSTIN, farmer (and it DOES say "single", not widow, for Charlotte) Hope this helps Steven
Stephen Gibbs has done wonders again. The clue was in 1861 census where relationship was missed. But Stephen mentioned Ancestry's LMA collection? I haven't come across it before and wondered if Stephen would mind elaborating on what it may contain? I'm guessing it might be London Marriage Archives, and so is exclusive to London only. I also wonder about the period? Peter
> But Stephen mentioned Ancestry's LMA collection? > > I haven't come across it before and wondered if Stephen would mind > elaborating on what it may contain? As others have said, it is the London Metropolitan Archive, which is the main repository for the vast majority of churches in the London area. The initial set of entries comprises four collections:- 1) Births & baptisms, 1813-1906 2) Marriages & banns, 1754-1921 3) Deaths & burials, 1813-1980 4) Baptisms, marriages & burials, 1538-1812 (this is UNINDEXED) These are all collections of the actual images, not just indexes. A few entries have been added since the initial launch; these are, I understand, mainly BTs for those churches where the LMA does not hold the parish registers, mostly Westminster which has its own archive. Ancestry has promised that other documents will be added to the collection in the future. Steven
Elizabeth, William Randall married Charlotte Single in Sept 1854 at Biggleswade. There is no birth of a Sarah Randall at Biggleswade but there are to Sarah Taylor births around that time. I'm not sure of the implications of that. It could be that Charlotte had a child to a Mr Taylor around the time of her marriage to William. The only way to find out would be to get certificates for both Taylor births. Sarah has left home by 1871 and is possibly married or mistranscribed. So even if you find her, it's not going to show her relationship to William. I couldn't find any likely Sarah's c1854 +/-5 years giving a birthplace of Biggleswade. You should obviously exclude any shown as daughter. With 1901 data, I sometimes find enlarging the image and going over it with a pencil helps. You might also try looking for the births on FreeBMD that should give you the right names. Apart from that, try FindMyPast on a pay per view basis. It would cost me to look for you. Often their transcriptions differ from Ancestry. But if you're struggling reading the original, so too would the person doing the transcription. Peter
