Lee, 3 Kimbolton Road was the site & address of the Bedford Union Workhouse. My father's step-sister was born there in May 1916, illegitimately; her mother then marries my grandfather 2 years later. The address on her birth certificate is 3 Kimbolton Road Bedford & informant is J Wildsmith. On the 1910 Kelly's directory (via the Historical Directories site) this address is confirmed as the Union House with Joseph Wildsmith : Master. In 1916 the Bedford Infirmary was built on the site & this progressed to be St Peter's Hospital, In 1948 this amalgamated with the County Hospital to become Bedford General Hospital, this site now known as North Wing. There is a book 'Private Charity & the Public Purse' by Bernard Cashman, published 1988, that describes this in detail.
