    3. Thank-you everyone for the responses regarding this address. It is interesting to see the progression of the institution from Workhouse (1796), to Poor Law Infirmary, to Public Assistance Institution (St Peter's), to the amalgamation under the NHS, to a current facility for mental health/addiction patients. Dr H. Dean Pollard M.B., F.R.C.S. must have had a lot to do with the changes if he worked there from 1900 to 1948. I have ordered a copy of the book "Private Charity and the Public Purse" by Bernard Cashman in order to learn more about the changes over time. Cheers Lee in Australia

    3. The progression from workhouse to hospital was not uncommon. I worked at the Newcastle-u-Tyne General Hospital which was built on the site of the workhouse and many older folk in the area would try to get into the Royal Victoria Infirmary as they still felt it was shameful to end up at the General. I actually worked in the old workhouse where they kept the medical records.
