Hi Mike, I am hoping you can help me. I lost all my contacts in my address book when my computer died. I have been in contact with Peter jarman who I have discovered is a relative of mine through my great granfather George Cartwright born in Biggleswade. Would you be able to supply Peters contact details to me so I can get in touch again. Yours is the only address that I have to try to reach him. Thank you Shirley Holmes Moruya NSW Australia. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike" <mjstrange@btinternet.com> To: <bedford@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, December 18, 2009 9:57 PM Subject: [BDF] Biggleswade History Society - New Book > The Biggleswade History Society is pleased to announce the launch of > its latest book - "Townsfolk of Biggleswade Volume 3" This is now an > annual event for what has become a very popular series in our sizeable > catalogue of booklets. > > See our web site for details at www.BiggleswadeHistory.org.uk > The book has only just been submitted to the Parish Chest so may not be > on our page there yet. My interested is in their Cook - Charlotte Kay (Key) - born Tempsford, Bedfordshire. Since she is part of my wife's greatly extended tree. Regards Kevin (Oxfordshire)

Hello Pete, > Baptism on 26 Jan 1865 and on 26 Nov 1865 both in Roxton Bedfordshire to > the right parents, Samuel and Elizabeth You don't give the sources for the two baptisms you quote - have you seen the 'actual' parish register entries? Is - perhaps- one of them a Patron Submission to the IGI? [OK they both could be for George Robert - a 'private' one immediately after his birth because he wasn't expected to survive, and then a 'public' 10 months later when he evidently had - but the Register *should* state if that was the case.] I ask because there were 2 George [Robert] DARRINGTONs in the 1871 (both shown in that census) and both as having been born in Roxton. [One aged 6, recorded as George Robert , son of Samuel & Elizabeth (who matches the 1865 birth registration) - and a George, 11, son of Cornelius & Sarah.] In 1881 George Robert was shown as Robert, son of Samuel & Betsey - with all his siblings matching the 1871 children - which could well imply that he'd become known as Robert [perhaps to avoid confusion with his possible cousin]. On the face of it I can't see any *real* puzzle here that can't be solved by buying - not a method I *like* - perhaps some 5 certificates.... Hi Pete - George Robert Darrington born 1865 is right and he was also known as Robert George Darrington and he is the one who married Catherine hand. I have seen the muddle of the baptism; someone has confused 26/1/65 with 26/11/65 at some time, so you would need to look that up in Roxton PRs. Parents were Samuel and Elizabeth Possibly George Robert "became" Robert George to avoid confusion with George Darrington born 1859 at Roxton which is the one married to Hannah Covington and died early. Parents were Cornelius John Darrington and Sarah I have only recently found a family link to the Darringtons myself Peter Jarman -----Original Message----- From: bedford-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:bedford-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of PETE BARKER Sent: 12 December 2009 15:49 To: bedford@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BDF] Darrington Puzzle Hi List, I have a puzzle, I have a George Robert DARRINGTON born in Mar Qtr 1865 in the Bedford District and his Baptism on 26 Jan 1865 and on 26 Nov 1865 both in Roxton Bedfordshire to the right parents, Samuel and Elizabeth. I don’t understand why you should think that George Darrington born Roxton married to Hannah, living in Roxton in 1891 should be the same person as Robert Darrington born Wyboston married to Catherine, living in Wyboston also in 1891 (although he appears twice in Wyboston, the other page showing him as born Eaton Socon – of which you have Robert’s marriage cert to Catherine which will give his father’s name.Wyboston was a hamlet). Having said that, Robert and Catherine were living in Eaton Socon in 1901, with Robert 36 born this time in Roxton. But how about the death of George Darrington age 38 in Bedford reg district in the Dec quarter 1897? Per www.freebmd.org.uk. In 1901 Hannah was a widow age 36 in Roxton, with the same children Ethel, Peter and Nellie, as in 1891. Seems very odd that there are two baptisms for George Robert in 1865 to the same parents, with no death of the earlier one. Should one of these have been Robert George? Do you have Robert’s marriage cert to Catherine which will give his father’s name? Hi List, I have a puzzle, I have a George Robert DARRINGTON born in Mar Qtr 1865 in the Bedford District and his Baptism on 26 Jan 1865 and on 26 Nov 1865 both in Roxton Bedfordshire to the right parents, Samuel and Elizabeth. I also have him on the 1871 census and a marriage for him to Hannah COVINGTON in Bedford 1883. He is with her in 1891 but died by 1901. The other part is that I have a Robert George DARRINGTON who was supposedly born in 1865, I have him on the 1891 census in Wyboston married to Catherine Hand in St Neots in 1884. Robert I have in 1911 living with Catherine still in Wyboston. I cannot trace a death for George or a birth for Robert or any more census than I have. I would be grateful for any suggestions or help in this, I have a suspicion that they are the same person except that they both appear in the 1891 census. Sorry for the long post, looking forward to any replies. Regards Pete.
Pete, Since you cannot find any death record for this person, is it possible on one of the records the name was transcribed incorrectly? Perhaps, Robert George is really George Robert? Or the other way around?? Just my 2 cents worth. Adrienne

Nicci, If you know she was unmarried in 1861 and 1871, why would you have us look at an 1854 marriage to John Humbley? Sarah's parents look to be John Armstrong & Elizabeth Mayes. They married 1828 at Eaton Socon and had Mary 1828, Susan 1830, Elizabeth 1835 and twins Sarah & Fanny 1838 John Armstrong looks to be the son of William Armstrong & Mary born 1795 at Cople. There's two possibilities for Elizabeth Mayes one 1793 at Cople and another 1796 at Ravensden. John Armstrong dies before 1851. Elizabeth dies after 1871. Sarah looks to have been unmarried but had three children, Fanny 1858, Isabella 1861 and John 1864. Isabella looks to have died young, but although she appears in 1861 census, I can't see a birth or death registration. I presume you know all about Fanny who was your 2XG grandmother. I can't find Sarah in 1881 census, but equally I can't find a marriage or death around Bedfordshire. Son John Armstrong appears in 1881 census in Yorkshire. He is living with Sarah' sister Elizabeth b1835 who has married Sam Wilson. I'd suggest you look for PR's of 1835 marriage to see if both were "of this parish". You might also check A2A or Eaton Socon records for bastardy bonds or the like. Peter
Nicci, I'm not sure how you can claim her as your 3rd GGrandmother if you're not sure of her married name. Surely you have to have names and dates for descendants. Anyway, I think the answer lies in census records. 1841 and 1851, should find Sarah with her parents. 1851 should give her birthplace. You can compare this with 1861, 1871 and 1881 which should find her with husband and children. Peter
