Do you know Where? in Bedfordshire? - You may link up with a large collection of Flints on the Beds/Herts border, in the vicinity of Hitchin -Luton. If you specify a few names it may be helpful, since there are an awful lot of them EVE

    3. Thinking out the box so to speak rather then confirming name on PR's since this marriae took place after 1837 it can be found in the BMD registrations. Logic behind my thinking is as follows: We know: Date: 21 Aug 1867 ==> Jul/Sep Quarter 1867 Location: Maulden ==> Registration District (Ampthill, Bedfordshire) Name of Groom: James Randall. Pump this into the BMD search on Ancestry resulted in one hit only one possible bride Elizabeth READ The BMD Reference is: Jul/Sep - 1867 - Ampthill, Bedfordshire - Vol: 3b Page: 576 - I have looked at the image of the Registration Index and can confirm that the Vol and Page have been correctly read. The other check is to check the ages of Eliza in the 1851 & 1861 Censuses (i.e. before marriage) and 1871 onward (post marriage). Also check that Eliza Read does not appear in the 1871 census. Don't want to teach grandma to suck eggs etc but thought it would be sensible to explain my thinking etc for the newer members etc. Regards Kevin

    3. Tony, It's a bit hard to help if we don't have specific names, dates and locations. However, you can find some submitted family trees at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi Search using Flint surname and birthplace of Bedfordshire. That gives a number of possibilities. Using some of the earlier dates and looking at pedigree and descendancy tabs you should be able to get someone of interest. You may even be able to download Gedcom files if you use a genealogy program. Peter in Sydney

    3. The progression from workhouse to hospital was not uncommon. I worked at the Newcastle-u-Tyne General Hospital which was built on the site of the workhouse and many older folk in the area would try to get into the Royal Victoria Infirmary as they still felt it was shameful to end up at the General. I actually worked in the old workhouse where they kept the medical records. 3. Lee, 3 Kimbolton Road was the site & address of the Bedford Union Workhouse. My father's step-sister was born there in May 1916, illegitimately; her mother then marries my grandfather 2 years later. The address on her birth certificate is 3 Kimbolton Road Bedford & informant is J Wildsmith. On the 1910 Kelly's directory (via the Historical Directories site) this address is confirmed as the Union House with Joseph Wildsmith : Master. In 1916 the Bedford Infirmary was built on the site & this progressed to be St Peter's Hospital, In 1948 this amalgamated with the County Hospital to become Bedford General Hospital, this site now known as North Wing. There is a book 'Private Charity & the Public Purse' by Bernard Cashman, published 1988, that describes this in detail.
