Any other information about her, or any other Biggleswade event, will be gratefully received. -- Best regards Mike Strange Vice Chairman - Biggleswade History Society www.BiggleswadeHistory.org.uk

I looked at all the Martha's in Wollaston but there's only one, a Martha Luddington that gets near the age and she married a Samuel Warner in London. 3. There is a baptism at Milton Ernest on 8 Mar 1918 for Sally Bettles daughter of Robert & Martha, labourer I didn't find a marriage for the parents though. However on 1851 census living at ME are Robert b 1789 Bozeat & Martha b 1793 Woolaston; so perhaps there married in Northants They have son Joseph b 1825; & going back to 1841 they have another son Thomas b 1821. On the 19 Sept 1838 marriage at ME of Richard White, minor of Bletsoe to Sarah Bettles, minor of Milton Ernest, it states her father as Robert Bettles, labourer, Witnesses Thomas Bettles & Elizabeth White If you find out who Robert marries please let me know cheers John ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Booth" <pbo08596@bigpond.net.au> To: <bedford@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, February 27, 2010 12:00 PM Subject: [BDF] Sarah or Sally BETTLES - ch 1818 Milton Ernest > > IGI has a batch record I036410 for the above christening to parents > Robert Bettles & Martha. > > What is strange is that there in no source information other than the > batch number. 3. IGI has a batch record I036410 for the above christening to parents Robert Bettles & Martha. What is strange is that there in no source information other than the batch number. Can anyone explain? I wonder if someone has PR's for Milton Ernest or can identify Robert Bettles and Martha. Peter in Sydney.

I'm not sure exactly what has happened, but I pulled all the relevant entries out of Ancestry's London Metropolitan Archives databases for my one-namer. Several marriages that I had previously taken from the IGI with an "I" batch number only showed up in the banns register and not in the actual marriage register. Several of these "missing" marriages then appeared at a different church. Of course very many of the entries in the banns register referred to marriages that later took place at St Mary's, but the date given on the IGI was that of the third reading of the banns, not of the marriage itself, so it seems a reasonable assumption that the banns register was used in error. 3. Hi Merryl Although there *may* be some banns transcribed (I haven't seen them so can't comment) but there are certainly some marriages on the IGI under "I" batches as my g.g.g.grandparents married there in 1807, I have the source page which is certainly the marriage not banns However, Ancestry have them anyway If you want me to check one for you let me know Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hi Steven, > > I am interested in St. Mary's Lambeth and seeing your comment below, are > you > saying that the 'marriages' for that parish on the IGI are really banns, > or > was the transcription elsewhere? > > From > Merryl Wells of Luton, Beds.

    3. Peter There are no Bettles in the Milton Ernest PR up to 1812. I can check the microfilche at the Archives next time I go. I suspect it is valid, as Sarah Bettles married Richard White in ME on 19 Sept 1838, extracted entry on IGI, which states her father as Robert. . As an aside; Richard White (1817) son of Richard White (1771) & Mary Woods; & father Richard had an older sister Elizabeth (1764) who was 2nd wife to my gt-gt-gt grandfather Thomas Partridge cheers John. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Booth" <pbo08596@bigpond.net.au> To: <bedford@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, February 27, 2010 12:00 PM Subject: [BDF] Sarah or Sally BETTLES - ch 1818 Milton Ernest > > IGI has a batch record I036410 for the above christening to parents > Robert Bettles & Martha. > > What is strange is that there in no source information other than the > batch number. Can anyone explain? "I" batch numbers are extractions done by LDS volunteers. No quality checking seems to have been done, so the accuracy of these extractions is very much in doubt. This batch appears to be a selection of baptisms and marriages from the period 1813-37, which were not previously on the IGI. Whereas a cursory look at this particular batch suggests it may be reasonably reliable, others I have found have been totally incompetent. For example, somebody transcribed the banns register for St Mary, Lambeth, thinking it was the marriage register. Steven

    3. Hi Sharon, > it seems highly likely that the family have been quite careless > with their information. Please don't be too hard on the family - for I'm sure that they were doing their best to be as accurate as they could... You're dealing with Family Stories here, passed down verbally, probably through at least 3 generations, so the "Chinese Whispers" effect is likely to be strong. Each person will remember the bits that interested them when they first heard them - so parts will inevitably get lost - and some of the finer details can get distorted when trying to remember them many years later. The other point to remember is that there's usually at least a degree of romanticising or lightly-gentrifying ancestors in general. You're starting from something like a jigsaw puzzle bought at a garage sale - *some* of the pieces will match the picture on the box - some are from elsewhere - but you'll *still* end up with missing ones at the end..... I've only been able to find one Directory for the [vaguely] relevant period of 1851-71 - the 1852 Post Office London Directory (Small Edition) - which although including several commercial undertakings in Tavistock Place none included a likely business that would've employed James. [However, it was indexed using OCR and produced several "hits" that seemed to bear no resemblance to the actual entries highlighted, so it's quite possible that some genuine entries would've been missed... What it *didn't* include were either street directories or classification by trades.] OTOH the alphabetical list of "Commercials" by surname *did* include 2 James WESTs; 1) a sealing wax and soda water fountain maker of 27 Lombard Street; and 2) a brewer and maltster of 213 Poplar High Street [but he was actually a James William] which unfortunately don't add anything :-( Admittedly a single directory producing no results can't be considered 'proof' that James wasn't in business on his own account at *some* stage during the period, although it could be said to support the view that - in 1852, at any rate - he most likely was not. Best wishes for success in the disentangling... Gus From: "Sharon Mathieson" <sharon.mathieson@gmail.com> Sent: Friday, February 26, 2010 8:33 PM Hi Guy, the information I have is that the address is Tavistock Street, but no documentary support. When I read back through the information it actually states that James lived in Tavistock St and then later moved to Islington. It was after he left Tavistock St that he had his studio in Theobalds Road. Looking at all the information that you have included, it seems highly likely that the family have been quite careless with their information.
