    3. Hi Bill Mary Goodman did marry Joseph Shearwood on the 3.9.1804 at Millbrook. Joseph was buried on 13.5.1818 at Millbrook leaving Mary with at least one child. Mary does not appear in any census as Shearwood and I presumed that she had died. The marriage with Joseph gives no indication of her birthplace but there is a Mary Goodman c 1.10.1775 at Rothley so it appears that she may well have remarried to Thomas Hollis. In 1841 they are still in Steppingley & Thomas is an Ag Lab. Can't help with the Bunkers. 3. Peter I Should have made it clearer - Ruth, Richard and Ann are children of Thomas HOLLIS and Mary. The burial 19 Apr 1817 age 37 for Mary HOLLIS David gives matches Mary BUNKER 1779 Steppingley dau of William BUNKER and Ann PEETE I think NBI has Joseph SHEARWOOD buried 1818 which would fit with his widow then marrying Thomas HOLLIS in 1820 The SHEARWOOD children are consistent with Joseph's 1804 marriage at Millbrook. I also note that IGI has a Mary GOODMAN 1775 Rothley, Leics !! I agree finding the 2nd Mary BUNKER and her Thomas HOLLIS will be a challenge I like the possibility of it being Thomas snr assuming his wife Sarah has died ! IGI has only two possible births of Thomas Hollis 1775 - 1815 yet there are eleven possibilities for Mary Bunker. So it's pretty difficult to be certain, unless some are still living in 1841 census. Even then you don't get birthplaces. I note the Thomas Hollis b1783 at Toddington had a father Thomas. So perhaps Thomas Hollis (Snr) was one of the marriages. That's another possibility. I also think you need to recheck your data on Joseph Shearwood and Mary Goodman. IGI shows Charles 1804, James 1807 and Ann 1811 all christened at Milbrook. So I don't understand your Ruth, Richard and Ann. 3. The only burial of a Mary in Steppingley was on 19 Apr 1817 age 37. There are no other earlier Mary Hollis burials in Beds that could be the one married in 1803 David On Tue, Apr 13, 2010 at 9:44 PM, Bill and Jenny Deverell < billandjenny@wdeverell.orangehome.co.uk> wrote: > Has anybody out there got access to the post 1812 registers for > Steppingley? > > I can see on IGI 3 possible marriages for Thomas HOLLIS born Toddington > 1783 > 1 01 AUG 1803 Mary BUNKER > 2 14 FEB 1813 Mary BUNKER !! > 3 08 FEB 1820 Mary SHEARWOOD > > The last appears from 1851 census to have been born Rothley, Leics around > 1777 > I strongly suspect she's a widow and that her maiden name might be GOODMAN. > (There is an 1804 marriage Joseph SHEARWOOD and Mary GOODMAN at Millbrook.) > > Children were bapt Ruth 1809, Richard 1813 and Ann 1815 > At marriage in 1803 Thomas was parish clerk and again in 1851 census. > > My queries are - > Are all 3 marriages the same Thomas? > Who was Richard's mother? > When did the first 2 Marys die? > > Bill Deverell > > > > > > The List Guidelines > > http://bedfordrootsweb.blogspot.com/ > > The Bedfordshire Surnames List > > http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~hughw/bedf.html<http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/%7Ehughw/bedf.html> > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > BEDFORD-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message >

    3. Has anybody out there got access to the post 1812 registers for Steppingley? I can see on IGI 3 possible marriages for Thomas HOLLIS born Toddington 1783 1 01 AUG 1803 Mary BUNKER 2 14 FEB 1813 Mary BUNKER !! 3 08 FEB 1820 Mary SHEARWOOD The last appears from 1851 census to have been born Rothley, Leics around 1777 I strongly suspect she's a widow and that her maiden name might be GOODMAN. (There is an 1804 marriage Joseph SHEARWOOD and Mary GOODMAN at Millbrook.) Children were bapt Ruth 1809, Richard 1813 and Ann 1815 At marriage in 1803 Thomas was parish clerk and again in 1851 census. My queries are - Are all 3 marriages the same Thomas? Who was Richard's mother? When did the first 2 Marys die? Bill Deverell

    1. [BDF] Hockliffe Family Name
    2. Helen Williams
    3. I'm doing a One Name Study of the name Hockliffe and variations such as Hackliffe and Hockcliffe., see http://www.one-name.org/profiles/hockliffe.html While at Dame Alice in the '50's I'd had a Saturday job in the birthday card section of Hockliffe's book shop in the High Street (where the Yorkshire Bank is now situated) without realising there was a family connection. Until I searched the 1881 census disks I didn't realise how rare the name was and this was long after I'd moved from Bedford. I'm wondering if any members of the list have links into the family. I'd be very happy to share information. Helen Hunting Hockliffes Everywhere

    2. Michelle, if you don't already have them try and get hold of maps showing which parishes are covered in which registration districts (for the registered BMD events after 1837) and to see where Bozeat, Leighton Buzzard etc are in relation to each other as you are dealing with areas very near county boundaries (which have changed over time). Bozeat is just up the road from Olney on the way to Wellingborough and in Northants while Olney is in Bucks and the border with Beds is also close by. Leighton Buzzard is in Beds but the Bucks border meanders nearby. HTIOH

    3. Michelle, Firstly, you will get better results if you include appropriate headings in your posts. Secondly, I presume you realise that Bozeat is in Northamptonshire not Bedfordshire. Do you have access to UK census record through Ancestry or your local FHS group. I would try to find the respective families in censuses from 1861 to 1911 and list out ages and birthplaces. Because they were all after 1837, you should be able to find births and marriages of parents and children on http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl Try this, and then if you get stuck on any particular lines, post another message on that particular county list. I'd also check for any submitted family trees on Ancestry or Rootsweb. Peter in Sydney PS!! Look for the marriage of Luke Smart. He may also be recorded like that in census records.

    3. Thank you. I thought I would try Bedfordshire because they left from Leighton Buzzard and I got mixed up with my County's it is the other family that were in Bozeat (The Gardiners The family my grand mother married into.) Yes I do have access to Ancestry. Not had much success there yet still very new at this. I will try the free BDM site thanks. 3. I am trying to trace my Family History. I am a member of the local Genealogy Society in Busselton W.A. and I was wonder if you might be able to point me in the right direction. My great grandfather was John Charles Smith born on the 9 January 1860 in Bozeat and he married an Elizabeth Emily Skevington (Smart) born 24 May 1863. Emily's father was Lucas Smart and he married Martha (Ann?)Skevington. She died on the 15th January 1872. She is apparently buried in the cemetery of a church in Bozeat. Are you able to help me out in any way. I would be most grateful as I have hit a brick wall and cannot go any further. My Grandmother passed away leaving a good bit of information but nothing before Lucas and Martha. John Charles Smith and Emily left from 15 North Street Leighton Buzzard to emigrate to Australia on the 21 November 1913. John was a retailer He had a Boot and Shoe Shop. I am also tracking the family of Jesse Gardiner who married a Jane Seymour(add to her name by herself) Butt they emigrated to Australia on the Trusty in 1842. This is as I can get here too. Thank you so much. Michelle

    3. Hi Michelle, Dont know whether this will help, but I have on file an Elizabeth SKEVINGTON who was born in Turvey, Bedfordshire in 1819 and married in that parish to William Samuel FOSKETT in 1843. He was an innkeeper in Olney, Buckinghamshire. Turvey is only 4.5 miles from Bozeat. Sandra

My grt grt grt grandfather Thomas Franklin who was a market gardener at Eaton Socon seems to appear on your list. Unfortunately the formatting on my email is a bit suspect so could you please confirm which columns the amount relate to please. I would hate to think he was in arrears! :-) Many thanks John

    3. Hi Michelle There is a probable marriage in the FreeBMD index http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ in the Sep quarter of 1862 for Luke SMART and Martha SKEVINGTON [marriage was July/Aug/Sep]in the Wellingborough district. This districts includes Bozeat. The reference is District Wellingborough Volume 3b Page 197 With this reference and a credit card you can order a copy of the marriage certificate on line at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ Also on FreeBMD is the birth registration of Emily Skevington SMART in the June quarter of 1863. Parents had 6 weeks to register a birth, so Emily should have been born between late January and June. District Wellingborough Volume 3b page 143 The family was in Bozeat at the time of the 1871 census Luke SMART Head, Marr, age 32 shoe manufacturer born Bozeat Martha SMART Wife, Marr, age 31 born Bozeat Emily S. SMART dau age 7 born Bozeat William SMART son age 3 born Bozeat Walter SMART son age 1 born Bozeat The Northamptonshire Baptism Index has Lucas SMART son of Lucas and Hannah of Bozeat labourer 1838 7-Jan at Bozeat and this one may be Martha Martha Trusler SKEVINGTON dau of William Mary of Bozeat lace buyer 1838 26-Aug at Bozeat The marriage certificate will include the names and occupations of the fathers, so hopefully will confirm or eliminate these baptisms.
