    3. Hi Alan, This is great! I was beginning to despair of finding a lead. Sophia was my great grandmother. She married Henry Dawson. He was a soldier too, with the 1st Foot Royals at the time of their marriage (on marriage cert.), then some info I've received from another descendant says he was in the 69th regiment of foot, originally the Lincolnshire regiment later amalgamated into the Welch/Welsh? regiment. They obviously travelled extensively with the army hence the birthplaces of the children. Henry was at the Battle of Alma in the Crimean War. Coincidentally he also became a volunteer Chelsea pensioner, and was Drill Master at Mr. Bates's School! Interesting that their youngest son was named James Robert, presumably after Sophia's younger brother. I've now found William, Catherine and James Robert at Chandos Street, 3 Sadlers Court in the 1851 census. According to Henry and Sophia's marriage certificate Sophia was resident at SadlersCourt at the time of her mariage to Henry. I'd be interested in any information you have about the Kemp side. It helps put flesh on the bones and I like to fit as many pieces of the jigsaw together as possible. I'll keep you posted about anything I find out about the Thompsons. Many thanks, Kind regards, Kathy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Alan Thompson" <ae_thompson@lineone.net> To: <BEDFORD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 27, 2006 5:59 PM Subject: Re: [BDF] Dawson > Hi Kathy > > William Thompson the maltster was my 3g grandfather, he married Catherine > Kemp 13 Jul 1820 at St. John, Bedford and together they produced ten known > children. > > Sarah 16 Mar 1821, > Charles 31 Dec 1822 (My great grandfather), > Catherine 3 Jan 1825, > Emma 15 Oct 1826, > William 14 Jan 1829, > Mary 21 Mar 1830, > Sophia 2 May 1833, > John No certain date, > James Robert 1835 > Lucy 6 Aug 1839 > > The above dates are a bit suspect, except for Lucy whose BC I have, they > were given to me by my grandmother at least fifty years ago. 3. That particular entry in the March quarter 1855 was in Biggleswade registration district which covers many parishes, not just Biggleswade. Biggleswade parish register has been extracted onto the IGI up to 1875 and the baptism doesn't appear, so presumably, if he was baptised, it was in another parish which isn't on the IGI. Have you found him on any subsequent census which gives his place of birth? I can't see him in 1861, although there were a couple of Lenard children in Biggleswade with grandparents and some Leonards in Stotfold and Astwick which are within Biggleswade registration district. It might be easier just to buy the birth cert! 3. Good afternoon list, I'm new to this particular list, but wondered if I could ask a big favour, if anyone is going to the record office would it be possible to request a look in the Biggleswade register for Jan/Feb/Mar of 1855 for the baptism of Samuel LEONARD. Thank you so much Corrall

    3. Hi cathy I'm afraid I proved to myself how hopeless I am at this business, tried the National Archives and got completely lost, just didn't know which way to turn. That he was in the East Yorkshire Rifles is merely an assumption on the part of a family member, and I think I heard somewhere that they are the "Volunteers" so presume that would mean having to include that word in his regiment. But of course it was to no avail because I couldn't even find the Yorkshire Rifles anyway. Guess I'm just too old for all this technical stuff. 2. Donna If you do a reference search - and put in 'item reference' : GK150/1 at Beds Archives search site as this item mentions quite a few PATEMANs/ EMERTONs & BASSs...in respect of land at Church End, Wootton --- http://blars.adlibsoft.com/refernc/indref.html It may be worth asking them about Wills too? cathy

    2. Owen Using my mum's server...other people gave you help with this question too ...no I havent written before. I gave you the link to the 1901 Census of England and Wales Online so you could check it out yourself? If your Robert SLATER served in the Armed Forces...his War medical record would be in the National Archives - it helps to know his Regiment or Rank as there are seventy-seven SLATERs who have a Christain name of 'Robert' This is the link to the National Archives: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/searchthearchives/ best wishes cathy
