Sorry Bedford List, My last email should have gone directly to Jill but I forgot to change the heading. However, should anyone else be after me and cannot get through they are welcome to use the hotmail address as well. Sue Given
Hi Jill, I forgot to mention. I had to change my email address as I was having trouble with the server/ISP ? It may happen again, so failing all else there is my hotmail address which seems to work, I just have to remember to check it, which I do probably once a week. I also have the messenger thingy on the hotmail address. I use this one to talk to my daughter in NZ over the computer lines, much cheaper than a phone call. So there is some problem. I wonder if someone could find the couple in 1841 Census although I'm not sure if London is available. Wandsworth is on the southern side of the Thames and so is quite possibly listed as Surrey, but is now classified as Greater London. There are quite a number of Hine families in Wandsworth in 1861, but no obvious Charles + Elizabeth. On Free BMD there is a possible death for Eliza in 1857 and for Charles in 1863, but these would need proving. I could not find any BDM events for Charles + Elizabeth or their children from 1790-1850 on IGI. I wonder if Doreen has any other information on children possibly from 1851 Census. Interestingly the HINE + BENNETT link occurs again in Dec 1856 with the marriage of Frederick HINE to Charlotte BENNETT in Kensington. It is possibly a case of second or third cousins marrying. This family is recorded partially at Rootsweb - Family Trees Peter in Sydney
The RAINES Families of Great Britian DNA Project is pleased to announce its latest findings: DNA testing has confirmed that that there were two genetically distinct RAINS/RAINES family groups in Kettering, Northamptonshire during the 18th & 19th centuries. One group documents its most distant ancestor to Thomas RAINES, born circa 1738 (in Northamptonshire?). The second family group documents its most distant ancestor to be Benjamin RHINES, born circa 1770, place unknown. Genetic testing has confirmed that they could not have had a common ancestor in the last 1000 years. The more remarkable finding however is that the DNA testing for a descendant of Benjamin Rhines of Kettering, born circa 1770, has shown a 25 marker match to a descendant of John RAINE, born circa 1540 in Romaldkirk, County Durham. DNA testing suggests that the living descendants of John RAINE & of Benjamin Rhines, who participated in the DNA Project, have a 98% probability of sharing a common ancestor within the last 400 years. This means that some of the RAINES/RAINS/RHINES families that dwelt in Northamptonshire, and particularly in Kettering, probably originated from the Romaldkirk area. These findings would most probably have never come to light through conventional "paper trail" genealogy and show the power of this 21st century tool that is now at our disposal. More information about the RAINES Families of Great Britian DNA Project can be found here: http://www.familytreedna.com/ The project is open to any male who shares the name RAINES (or a derivative) who believes his ancestors originated in Great Britian. Hi to all on the list, I have a Elizabeth Bennett b 1894 Hampshire Bedfordshire married to a Charles Hine b 1793 Wandsworth and on the 1851 Surrey census they have her born in Hampshire Bedfordshire, I have been unable to find the place or has the transcriber made a mistake or am I doing something wrong. I can't find any other children for them so I was hoping someone may be able to check the burials to see if William or Judith died shortly after John was born. Thank you so much for your time, Donna
Hi listers With the talk of Maulden I thought I would post my research interest in that parish. The earliest ancestor was John EMERTON / EMMERTON, hemp dresser, married to Grace (maiden name unknown) and who had a family of ten children baptised in Maulden between 1752 and 1768 of whom five died as infants. Their daughter Grace married John BRIANT in 1776 John EMERTON's eldest son Stephen 1753-1780 (he didn't last very long either!) married Kitty PARKER in Maulden in 1775 and had two sons Stephen & Edward. Kitty was born in Flitton and evidently returned there after her husband's death as she married Thomas STUDMAN there in 1789. Stephen EMERTON Jr married Elizabeth HUNT in 1802 in Flitton and Edward married Mary WATTS in 1801 in Flitton. Edward settled in the Silsoe area. Would be interested to hear from anyone with knowledge of this family. Regards Kerrie
Hello All I have just joined the list and am researching the Northwood family in Maulden and Bedford. I was recently told that in 1835/37 and 39 25% of the population of Maulden died of some sort of epidemic and wonder if anyone knows anything about it or has any ideas what the epidemic might have been. Regards Deb Chambers

However, there are anecdotal references to influenza in the years [1835/7] you are interested in and it seemed to be a widespread epidemic throughout the country rather than local to Bedfordshire.
