Hi there Bedford, I was wending my way through Ancestry birth records when I came across one for a cousin of mine, Romaine A Lawrence, born Leighton Buzzard 1941, mothers maiden name Procter, father Bertram Charles Lawrence. Now, my question is this, could SKS out there rack their brains, have they heard of this lady...Or, could someone make a suggestion as to how I might locate her. I did look through the records for marriages, but after 20 years of records, I lost the plot. You know what it's like. I do hope that one of you wonderful Bedfordonians can help. Thank you in anticipation Regards Denise Lawrence-Jones

Hi, Found this site access to the New South Wales archives. http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/staterecords/ If you go to it, then click on state records, then key down and click on keyname search you will get a search box. Just type in the surname and if you are lucky and your person is there, you could get ticket of leave details, pardon details, shipping details, divorce details, maybe a photo, depending on what records there are. You can even order records if you find one. From what I have seen it seems to be a really good site. Good hunting Sue in Australia
I'm resending this because it seems to have got all mixed up with the question last time, I've been having troubles with my email so thats probably why - Patti Hi Betty I have Thomas Cox and Mary Cherry in my tree. Mary was baptised 3 Oct 1779 Shillington, Thomas was born outside Bedfordshire according to the 1841 census which has him aged 60, living at Upton End, Shillington with his wife Mary 60, son Robert 25 and granddaughter Betsy Cox aged 6. I dont have a marriage for John 1802, but I do have marriages for the other two, Thomas 1806 married Martha Brooks 1801, on 30 Nov 1828 at Shillington - 3 children Ann 1832, Eliza 1834, and Emma 1840, all born at Shillington. Also living at Upton End in 1841 with their children and widowed father in law, Cornelius Brooks, and John Kirby 45, relationship unknown William Cox 1809 married Elizabeth Simmonds c1806, at Shillington on 6 Feb 1831, one child, Mary 1831 - again living at Upton End in 1841 with his wife and daughter, next door to his parents. There was another son, Robert Cox, no baptism found, but aged 25 in 1841, living at Upton End with his parents, and his daughter Betsy b.1834. His wife was Martha Simmonds, she may have died before 1841 as I couldnt find her in the census, and may have been the sister of Elizabeth, but I havent researched the Simmonds yet. Hope that helps. Cheers Patti

Hello everyone, This is my first message to the list. Does anyone have a copy of the 1841 census of Harrold, Bedforshire please? If so, would they kindly look for Mary CLAYSON for me? In 1851 she declares she is 60, a widow, a Laundress and born in Weedon, Nths. She is living with her daughter Betsy age 15 who is a lace maker. In 1861 she is still living in Harrold age 68 and a Washerwoman. Betsy has married and her widowed son Charles and his four children are living with her. By 1871 she is no longer there. I need to find the Christian name of her husband before I can find her marriage. Thanks in advance and happy hunting to everyone, From: Jean who lives in Victoria, B.C. Canada.
Hello I am hoping to spend a couple of days visiting the record office in Bedford next month and would also like to take in the villages of Marston Moretaine, Wootton and Cardington where many of my ancesters lived - but I will be using public transport, and would appreciate some suggestions regarding transport links and possibly places to stay. Are there still regular trains running out to Marston on the Bedford/Bletchley line (I believe the nearest station would be Stewartby)? Or is there a bus service which would be more convenient? Any suggestions appreciated - but maybe they ought to be sent off list as this is a bit off-topic. If you are wanting to order certificates online and use Google, typing in either "gro" or "General Register Office", the Top Hit comes up highlighted as ... "ukcertificate.com Secure online ordering & payment. Official Search/Certificate Service" and when opened looks just like any other Government-derived Privatised service. (It's Really Convincing...) *** DO NOT USE IT *** They charge roughly 3 times the amount of the Real GRO - the second hit - to say nothing of quoting longer delivery times. While hesitating to use the word 'scam' - for I'm not doubting for one moment that they would fail to honour any orders placed - their site is designed with intent seriously to mislead even if not to deceive. DO NOT BE MISLED... The Real GRO at "gro.gov.uk" provides a far superior service in every way. Have any of you come across this organisation? Or know what the Real GRO think about it?
