    1. Christenings
    2. Listers We expect the babies to be christened within the first year of life...but they often are not. It seems Bedfordshire people often waited 'till the child was almost in their teens [18th C] before they were christened. I expect that had something to do with the Baptist etc influence in our County? So birth dates cannot be presumed from those christening dates as often kids were christened in 'batches' anyway. Sometimes the original PR will give more info — if the vicar adds an age into the record but that wont be shown on the IGI. If they survive until the census [and I can't get my head around 1841s rounding-up or rounding-down ... whatever was the mad Victorian thinking behind that scheme?] - that might help... 3. Jacqueline I checked the Flitwick Parish records, but the baptism for Robert Parrell is not there. I also checked the surrounding areas including Clophill, Ampthill, Tingrith, Woburn, Maulden, Pulloxhill, Chalgrave, Flitton, Silsoe, Millbrook, Westoning, Harlington, Cranfield, Thurleigh, Riseley, Shillington, Lidlington, Salford, Holcote, Biggleswade, Barton, Streatley and Sundon. Sorry but Robert Parrell was not listed in any of those either. I did find Robert's death listed in Flitwick on July 4th 1793. The entry showed Rob Parrell aged 79 (late clerk of this parish). There was also another entry which showed: Entered on fly-leaf "Robt Parall enter'd upon the office of Parish Clerk on Trinity Sundays ye 17th of June 1764 - Will: Aveling, Vicar" I also found other deaths listed which I will put on an excel file for you if you would like me to? Also I found the baptisms for Robert's children if you would like their names and dates? There were some Tilcock's listed in Clophill if you would like those? Please let me know and I will send the details direct to your email address. Regards Sue Hart Hi, I am searching for information on this name particularly Robert Parrell. Robert married Susan Tilcock on 2 December 1755 in Flitwick, Bedfordshire. They Baptised seven children between 1755-1775 all baptised in Flitwick.I have been unable to find Robert Parrell's baptism, any help would be much appreciated. Thank you Jacqueline

    1. The Toddington Robinson/Weatherhead branch !!

    3. ^5 again all, Having drawn a blank on the "Hide line" last month, I have moved my attention to my paternal Gt G-Mothers other branch, the Robinson's. Why?, I don't know !, because this seems to be another brick wall. As shown in the outline decadency below, my information dries up in the 1770's, with "William Robinson & Mary Weatherhead", both seemingly natives of Toddington (both passed away before the 1841 census, so based only on the IGI). I Can find no clue to the parentage of Mary, and only a VERY tentative link to "Edward Robinson and Ann Bunker" for William (based solely on a guess, fuelled by their marriage date being similar to Williams DoB ??). Again earnestly hoping there is a lister with a vested interest, that has already crossed this bridge on either of the pair, that can point me in the right direction. Hi I have been given a photo of supposedly a shop front of one of my ancestors in Biggleswade. The name Sandon is on the shop front. However, I'm trying to find the name of the street. One clue opposite this Sandon shop is a pole with a picture of a white swan at the top. I was just wondering if this might have been a pub sign and maybe there was a Swan pub/hotel in Biggleswade. The things in the photo look quite old, maybe early 1900s??? One thing may help to date and label the street, is that there appears small piles of concrete/brick? squares(about 60cm along each side) along the dug up kerb as if they are replacing old squares. There is a man in a penny-farthing riding down the street. I also heard there is an informative website for old English pubs???? Any clues would be very helpful to establish the name of the street. Cheers Clive Sandon

3. Hi Steve, I don't have a Barry or Bruce in my Endersby family tree, but that doesn't mean that they couldn't be a relation to me. I would just have to go back on their lineage to see if they connect to mine. ----- Original Message ----- From: "steve martin" <stevegmartin@msn.com> To: <BEDFORD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, May 25, 2006 3:31 PM Subject: RE: [BDF] Endersby >I know an Endersby family that still live in the Bedford area, Barry is the >father and Bruce a son, any relation? > > >>From: "Scott Dorschner" <sdorschner@new.rr.com> >>Reply-To: BEDFORD-L@rootsweb.com >>To: BEDFORD-L@rootsweb.com >>Subject: [BDF] Endersby >>Date: Wed, 24 May 2006 10:36:09 -0500 >> >>Hello everyone, >> >>I am looking for any information on John and Eleanor (Rowson) Endersby who >>might have lived in Bedford during the early to mid 1700s particularly >>their parents and any siblings names. 1. Old England Calendar
    2. Sandee
    3. ELIZABETHAN YEAR The number of the year did not change on New Years Day. The English calendar had come down from the Romans, for whom January 1 was the first day of the year. Accordingly this was called New Years Day and was observed as an official holiday as the Feast of the Circumcision of Christ. However, the number of the year did not actually change until March 25, the Feast of the Annunciation. England differed from the Continent in this respect. The day that a sixteenth-century Frenchman (and a modern person) would consider January 1, 1589 would be called January 1, 1588 in sixteenth-century England. Educated Englishmen sometimes dealt with this problem by writing the date as 1Jan1588/9. On March 25 the year would be written as 1589, and England would be in line with the rest of Europe until January 1 came around again. England was using a slightly different calendar from most of Western Europe (the exceptions being the other Protestant countries and certain Italian city-states). This was the Julian Calendar, so names by Julius Caesar. This calendar had leap-years, which actually made the Julian year slightly longer than the actual solar year. In 1582 Pope Gregory XIII established the Gregorian Calendar, which we still use today, by which three out of four years ending in 00 (e.g. 1900, are not leap-years). This calendar was much more accurate, but England was so fiercely anti-Catholic that it did not follow the Popes lead until 1752. Sandee

    3. Hello Listers, I have been trawling through the Lidlington Parish Film when I cam across this entry. Bapt. 1 June 1834 Francis ODELL - "an old man aged 76yrs." If there is someone searching the ODELL name please can you confirm that I have the correct wife/wives for this man 1. Francis ODELL m. 2 Nov. 1780 Mary GOBBY both made there mark and the witnesses Richard GOBBY & Thomas COOK the Clerk. Did this Mary ODELL nee GOBBY then have a daughter Ann ODELL bap. 23 Dec. 1781 Lidlington ? and did Mary ODELL then die? 2. Francis ODELL m. 9 April 1787 Lidlington Martha WEBSTER Is this a 2nd marriage for the Francis ODELL? Why was Francis ODELL getting bapt. at 76yrs. - wonder if he was ill and did not want to die before being baptised? Is there a burial for him in Lidlington please around 1834? Burials are not on this film I have been searching grrr. Thanks for any help Betty Lark Richmond, Nelson, NZ
