In 1861 he was a 4 year old living with his parents Robert (30, farmer of 120 acres b Langford) and Sarah (28 b Astwick Beds) at Langford, but in 1871 as a 14 year old scholar born Langford Beds, he was at London Orphan Asylum Clapton, St John's Hackney, Middlesex. In 1861 he also had an older brother George H aged 7, so he wasn't the eldest son. (In 1871 George Henry Grant aged 17 born Langford was an apprentice ironmonger in Cambridge) What may have been a younger sister, Louise Grant age 9 was staying with her uncle Henry Waldock 32, baker b Astwick Beds, at Hitchin Herts. Charles' mother was Sarah Waldock (married Robert Emery Cranfield Grant at Astwick 9 Mar 1853). It looks as though the parents may have died and the children were apprenticed out/put in an orphanage/ or stayed with relatives. Whilst I can't answer your question I wonder if he was apprenticed from the London Orphan Asylum rather than Bedford Grammar School (now Bedford School), and your family essay presents a sanitized history. You could try contacting BLARS (archive@bedscc.gov.uk) to see if they hold pupil lists, or even the school direct Regards David amdg0195 <ag001@wave.co.nz> a écrit : Are there any records for Bedford Grammar School - lists of former pupils ? I am looking for some record that Charles Cranfield Grant bn 31 Dec 1856 at Langford , Bedfordshire attended Bedford Grammar School. Family oral history says so ..... but are there school records to confirm this ? Below is an excerpt from a family essay........ "Eldest son [above] attended Bedford Grammar School and was apprenticed to sail in the Merchant Marine after schooling and served in various ships." Where would he have been apprenticed and how long a period would this have been for ? Are there records to search re this training ? Any guidance welcomed. I think (but I'm not sure) that I can top that. I had my youngest daughter while breastfeeding my middle daughter AND taking the PILL (my middle daughter was 12 months old when the third was born and the third was three weeks late). My middle child finally stopped breastfeeding a week before her sister arrived. cheers Linda (Perth West Oz) BILLINGTON - Belgrave, Leicestershire BROWN - Middlesex, England CONNOR - King's County, Ireland DERRY - Belgrave, Leicestershire GARNER - Wasperton, Warwickshire GODDARD - Kenilworth & Coventry,Warwickshire GOODWIN - Caddington, Bedfordshire HARRIS - Belgrave, Leicestershire KELLY - Armagh, Co. How sure are you that the 1790 marriage was the original Thomas? Does the parish register describe him as a widower? There's no Sarah Hooker buried anywhere in Beds between 1766 and 1808. On the face of it, it looks more likely that the 1790 marriage was of their son Thomas christened 1760. It begs the question as to who the Thomas's were who married in Caddington in 1799, 1811, 1826 and 1829. As there's a Sarah Tyler baptised in Caddington in 1807 which may have been the Sarah Tyler who married in 1829 I very much doubt if her husband was the son of the original Thomas and Sarah as he would have been 69 by then! The 1841 census shows Thomas Hooker age 35 and Sarah 30 in Caddington, and there's a burial in Caddington on 25 July 1844 of Sarah Hooker age 37. He's more likely to have been the Thomas, son of Samuel and Mary baptised in 1806. It looks as though you may have rolled 3 generations into 2. There are simply too many Thomas Hooker events in Caddington to sort them out from the IGI/NBI, or even from the transcription which doesn't include marriage witnesses and only goes up to 1812. You really need to check the microfilm at your nearest LDS Family History Centre . Who for example was Thomas Hooker aged 39 who was baptised in Caddington in 1817? There's nothing obvious on the IGI for either Sarah Kilby or Sarah Pales. Reference to Flamstead, Herts parish register for the 1861 marriage may give the parish of residence of both Sarah and Thomas, plus witnesses which may provide a clue. For ag labs I think you can rule out divorces. They just went down the road to London and remarried bigamously! Ok....... while we're on the subject............. my Grandma gave birth to 17 between 1887 and 1912. She took on 4 more of her sister's (whose lifestyle she objected to) and brought up her daughter's illegitimate girl. The family was "called" but Grandma said lots of women had given birth to as many as she had but some of theirs had died. Her first son died in infancy and one died from burns sustained at home while she took him to hospital on the tram. She was told:"Never mind. You have plenty more". She said:"No. Once they're here they make their place". Her husband was not the best (the usual... drink) but she managed to raise the rest (one had rickets and the daughter's girl died of TB) and she was a very gentle, much loved Mam and Grandma when she died at 86, greatly respected by her children-in law. She was intelligent and knowledgeable, very political and well read. She was in her 50s when she got the vote. All this she did as a coal miner's daughter, coal miner's wife and mother of 7 coal miners in Yorkshire. It was found when she died that she was still paying off a debt incurred with the Co-op at the time of the strikes. Vale, Jane Ann. I'm so proud of you. Thankyou for reading this; I've never actually gone though it like this before. No one ever actually said it was remarkable. It's very moving to see it written down. Pat Burke

Hi Sarah, my grandmother had 19 children in South Australia in the 1880's. She was a Cornwall girl.. There were triplets and twins.. none of those babies lived but at least 10 of her children did survive.. what a hero of mine. She even moved a few times.. and then came out to Western Australia and ended up in Kalgoorlie which was our gold mining boom town - that is where she is buried.
