Dear Elizabeth Thanks for this information. Just the sort of thing I'm looking for. I'm thrilled to bits with all the help I've already had on this subject. Thank you all. They are quite distinctive with curved roofs, porches and windows. They were restored in 1985. Pat, The Charlotte SAWFORD of Knotting was born 1807. This would make her 34 years younger than William COX based on his age in 1851. The first question is :- Are you sure you have the correct marriage ? If you get Charlotte's parents, you can use them for a parent search on IGI to find her brothers and sisters. I would suggest that Elizabeth is a wife of a brother to Charlotte. You might be able to find them in an earlier census or pick up their marriage on IGI or FreeBMD. Similarly, you should be able to find Mary DANIELS in 1871 Census with parents or her birth on FreeBMD. I would also suggest a check of Surname Message Boards and Family Trees at Rootsweb. Peter
Dear Peter, Thankyou for your comments. The Charlotte SAWFORD of Knotting was born 1807. This would make her 34 years younger than William COX based on his age in 1851. The first question is :- Are you sure you have the correct marriage ? I don't suppose I am 100% sure. William's Charlotte was known as "Tofford" (IGI) , "Saufoot" (A daughter's birth certificate) and "Sawfoot" or "Sawford" (a son's birth certificate)......... this last's writing is unclear. Charlotte's death certificate puts her at 42 years of age in May 1843 and states she is the wife of William Cox, Labourer. As far as I can tell she had produced 8 children 7 of whom reached adulthood and produced families of their own (with plenty of Williams but no Charlottes). I'm not sure if the 1807 date is birth or christening. The 1841 census has William's age at 60 or 68 and Charlotte's at 30. The next person on this census is George (15 years) who according to the IGI (as above) is child of a William and Charlotte (Tofford). By 1851 Charlotte was dead and William was 78 and living with 2 of his children aged 15 and 12. I have ordered a possible death cert for him from GRO If you get Charlotte's parents, you can use them for a parent search on IGI to find her brothers and sisters. I have the 1807 Knotting Charlotte's parents, brother and sisters but no marriage partners as yet. Strangely enough one sister is an Elizabeth. This branch of my family seldom repeats names ............ quite unlike other branches. Thankyou for these suggestions. I think I shall start with RootsChat. Pat
Dear all I'm taking part in a nationwide project on almshouses, co-ordinated by The Family & Community Historical Research Society. I am trying to find out as much as I can about Bedfordshire almshouses for the period c1300 to 1914. The aim is not only to include where they exist, but who founded them and when, their location and architecture, and who lived in them. I shall of course be doing much of the research in Bedford record office, but am hoping that there are others on this mailing list who can help out with specific queries, or who have some detailed knowledge. My first query is, does anyone know of any other almshouses apart from those listed below?: Ampthill - Feoffee almshouses Bedford - Best ditto Bedford - Dame Alice Bedford - Harpur Street Bedford - St John Broom - Fordham Caldecote - Harvey Cardington - Whitbread Clifton Cople Cranfield - Hartwell Dunstable - Ashton Dunstable - Cart Harrold - Jolliffe & Mead Houghton Conquest Leighton Buzzard - Page Leighton Buzzard - Wilkes Luton Milton Ernest - Turnor Oakley - Lovell Potton - Potter Shefford - Lucas Stevington - Barringer Toddington Turvey - Barton Woburn Thanks very much for any help you can give me. Since Thomas married an Elizabeth Carr in Wilby, Northampton and raised his three children in Irchester and married in Irchester, I think this is my Thomas. I have copies from the Bedford books on him....but I really question whether it is right. I know that there are manor records there. Can you help me in any way? Thank you for your time. Hello All Two queries for you. 1) Does anyone know of this lady? 1881 Census Elizabeth SAWFORD Head W Female 75 Glapthorn, Northampton, England Mary E. May DANIELS Grand Daur U Female 14 Bolnhurst, Bedford, England Needlewoman Source Information: Dwelling No 6 Almshouse Census Place Milton Ernest, Bedford, England Family History Library Film 1341387 Public Records Office Reference RG11 Piece / Folio 1615 / 48 Page Number 3 I'm presuming she's been in ME some time to be entitled to an almshouse. My ancestor Charlotte Sawford from Knotting married Wm Cox and settled in ME where she died in the 1840s. The would have been around Elizabeth's age in 1881 so might have been related to her, maybe even her sister in law. 2) May I draw your attention to the 1851 census for Milton Ernest (HO107/1751/175A) where William Cox aged 78 is described as a pensioner? How on earth did an Ag Lab get to be a pensioner in 1851? A pension from whom? Looking forward to hearing from you. Pat (Burke)

Hi, Does anyone happen to have a Roy Goodwin who married a Brenda Craft in their tree please. Brenda was born 1935 and I think Roy was a mechanic in the 1970s. They had two boys, Steven and Bradley who would have been born in 1960s. They lived in Bedford in the 1970s. My geography is a bit off, but I was staying with an aunt in Bedford and could walk to visit Roy and Brenda and the boys. In walking there, I had to go across 'a big park' which may have had a lake and a kiosk in it. Sorry, that is the best I can do. Brenda died in 2005 and is/was my aunt. I know nothing else on Roy except his name and possible occupation. Thanks and have a good day. Sue in Australia

Hi, If someone has access the the BDM records for 1923, may I request a lookup for a marriage please. If someone finds it, no scans or copies or anything are required, just the written details would be great, thanks. The information I have, as can be seen, appears wrong, unless there were two marriages. Winifred Brightman born Ampthill 1904 and Catherine Elizabeth Brightman (her sister) born Ampthill 1899. Winifred supposedly married Benjamin James Burton in Ampthill in 1923, but then again Catherine also married Benjamin James Burton (I don't have a date). Can the 1923 marriage please be checked and see what sister married Benjamin? I would appreciate any help please, thanks. Have a good day. Sue in Australia
