May I draw your attention to the 1851 census for Milton Ernest (HO107/1751/175A) where William Cox aged 78 is described as a pensioner? How on earth did an Ag Lab get to be a pensioner in 1851? A pension from whom? Thanks Pat (Burke)

How on earth did an Ag >Lab get to be a pensioner in 1851? A pension from whom? Probably from the army - did he serve at e.g. Waterloo, or in the Indian wars, and get invalided out? You should be able to check this by studying the (indexed) WO97 class (from TNA Kew). Many former soldier had other jobs once they left the army. Very few employers ever rewarded even the longest service on the farm with money - (in most cases, only a nanny, butler or housekeeper, amybe a cook, would be given money in a will ); if this had occurred, he would probably have been referred to as an annuitant, not a pensioner. -- Eve McLaughlin Author of the McLaughlin Guides for family historians Secretary Bucks Genealogical Society

    3. There are a lot of pensioners in the census - which could be explained in several ways: They could be a Chelsea Pensioner (look at military records) or They could have been left money in the form of an annuity, either by an employer or relative (in which case you need to research his extended family looking at Wills etc.) or It might just be the enumerators way of recording that they were in receipt of Parish Relief (in which case you need to look at any poor relief papers in the parish) Hope this helps Debbie Patricia Ann Burke wrote: > Do you mind if I repeat this question? > > Does anyone else have an 1851 pensioner in ther families? > > May I draw your attention to the 1851 census for Milton Ernest (HO107/1751/175A) where William Cox aged 78 is described as a pensioner? 3. Dear Diana, As a long time resident of Broom I can tell you that the Fordham Almshouses were built by Rupert Fordham in 1913 in memory of his wife Janet, who was killed in a huntimg accident. They are quite distinctive with curved roofs, porches and windows. They were restored in 1985. You may hear from Stella Watkin who has done a lot of work on The Bedfordshire Village Book, which is often mentioned on this site. Regards.
