    1. Re: [BDF] Elliott Family - Bushmead/Duloe/Eaton Socon

    3. Morning Janice & David Mother & grandson are doing fine thanks; & I'm not easily distracted except for visits to Dunstable !. I still think Mary Elliott is the Mary baptised 3//3/1811 is daughter of William & Mary ELLET as per extracted IGI entry. They had other Ellet children baptised at Eaton Socon as per IGI & buried as per escan site entries; as follows John baptised 13/12/1812 - died 1813 age 4 months Ann baptised 04/09/1814 dued 1828 age 14 years William bapt 10/05/1817 died 1826 age 9 years James bapt 01/12/1822 died 1823 age 10 months Mother Mary was buried 18/June 1827 age 44 making her born 1783 There was another son John bapt 23/04/1820. On 1841 census he is named Elliott with wife Rachel daughter Mary age 8 mnths. 1851 through to 1891 they appear with further children Maomi & Harriet with the name ELLARD. Marriage index at St Neots Oct/Dec 1839 is John Elliott to Rachel Stevens. On later censuses his occupation is watch & clock cleaner; & he has an ntry in the BHRS vol 70 Beds Clock & watchmakers under the name Ellard. So with wife Mary dying in 1827, William ELLETT (Widower) married Elizabeth Barnes (Widow) on 23/12/1827 at Eaton Socon. 1851 has them in Eaton Socon William age 1776 born Rushden ! ! ! ! & Elizabeth b 1771 Budden/Buckden, Hunts 1841 has them age 60 & 65 So Mary Elliot 1810 is not daughter of John & Jemima but most likely is their niece, because John & William both born Rushden about same time, could be brothers ??? - something to ask Sandy on the Northants RootsChat board (akready posted) Have a think about that. Regards Grandad John ---- Original Message ----- From: "Janice Peasnell" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]>; <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, August 22, 2008 2:18 AM Subject: Re: [BDF] Elliott Family - Bushmead/Duloe/Eaton Socon Hello David, Thank you for replying, John will now find himself rather distracted for a while. I have recently retired and now have more time to spend researching my family in depth. I visited Eaton Socon in June this year and was lucky enough to find the very informative books published by ESCAN, several of them mentioned members of the Elliott and Case families. Up until then I only had information on Ann and Mary. My G/G/Grandmother was the Ann Elliott who married Robert Case and she was his housekeeper before they married. I do not know if she was married before they married there is certainly no evidence of it from this end. (We did know she had been his housekeeper). I think I will just leave the Mary Elliott - John Wrench from Great Staughton as is, except of the Christening information. They were certainly the parents of Thomas and Jacob Wrench that came to Australia and they were both the nephews of Ann Elliott/Case All of the information I have regarding Ann Elliott shows her coming from Bushmead. I realise that Bushmead is close to Colmworth but until very recently Colmworth hadn't been mentioned. No, I have no information on John and Jemima's children having been christened in bulk but Mary and John WRENCH's children were, Thomas, Mary Ann and William on 19/5/1839, George and Sophia on 6/8/1843, Eliza and Joel on 7/5/1854. It would seem that the parents of Ann and Mary could have (I hope so) been John Ellard and Jemima Gray. Are the parish records of Colmworth available? do they go back very far? Are these records being looked at by the ESCAN group, they are doing such a wonderful job in the Eaton Socon area. Thank you again for answering my request, Kind regards Jan Peasnell/Melbourne/Oz On Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 2:44 AM, David <[email protected]> wrote: > I've been working with John on this Elliott family, but he's a bit > distracted at the moment having become a grandfather earlier today. > > We think that his Mary Elliott/Ellet is the one baptised on 3 March 1811 > at > Eaton Socon, daughter of William and Mary. 1. [BDF] Rachel Pheasant
    2. SRuch
    3. I'm new to the list and am seeking information about Rachel Pheasant, first wife of my ancestor, John Bartlett. Pheasant seems to be a familiar name in Bedfordshire and I'm hoping to find information about Rachel's family. Here's what I have found while researching in London and Tavistock, Devon: John Bartlett (believed to have been born in Calstock, Cornwall about 1764) married Rachel Pheasant in St. Marylebone Church in London in 1795. They had a daughter, Ann, that same year and sailed to America. Rachel died in February 1797 in Baltimore, Maryland, and John took daughter Ann back to England to be reared by his family. Rachel Pheasant Bartlett's will was probated in the Court of Canterbury in 1798. She left 40 pounds to her husband. Her last known address in London was Powis Place, Great Ormond Street in the parish of St. George the Martyr in the County of Middlesex. I've been unable to find any more information about Rachel. John returned to Maryland, remarried and died in Ohio. I have established that his daughter, Ann Bartlett, was living in Tavistock, Devon, in 1813 when she married John Roberts of Calstock. John and Ann Roberts had several children in Calstock before moving to America. I'm happy to share detailed information about the Bartletts and Roberts in America and many family photos. 3. I've been working with John on this Elliott family, but he's a bit distracted at the moment having become a grandfather earlier today. We think that his Mary Elliott/Ellet is the one baptised on 3 March 1811 at Eaton Socon, daughter of William and Mary. This is an IGI entry extracted from the parish register so is reliable. Unfortunately an LDS member has hijacked this baptism, changed the father to John, and married Mary off to John Rench at Gt Staughton. I don't think there's much doubt that Mary, daughter of John and Jemima, married John Rench, but she wasn't baptised on 3 March 1811. Apart from Lydia's baptism at Colmworth in 1832 (extracted entry) the IGI also has a member submission for the baptism of Ann Elliott, daughter of John, at Colmworth on 23 March 1845, birth about 1818. The only Ann I can see baptised on this date at Colmworth was Ann Herbert, but no parents were mentioned, nor was there an age giving an implied birth of 1818. However I see that an Ann Elliott, father John, married Joseph Herbert in 1839 at Colmworth so the baptism may have been a post marriage, very late, one. Is this the Ann who married Robert Case? Seems odd if so, as Robert appears to have married an Ann Elliot, not Herbert, who was a servant in his household in 1851. Mysterious, particularly as I can't find the Herberts in 1851! When you say the children were baptised in bulk are you referring to the children of John and Jemima, as I can't find their baptisms at all (apart from Lydia and possibly Ann as very late ones)? I believe that John and Jemima were the John Ellard and Jemima Gray married at Eaton Socon on 15 Sept 1806, and that Jemima Gray was baptised at Colmworth on 4 March 1787 at Colmworth, daughter of John and Lydia (probably explaining where the name Lydia came from with the Elliotts/Cases). Ages over 15 in 1841 were rounded down to the nearest 5 below (or should have been!); they were not rounded up. Baptism entries do not have details of godparents. Life would be much easier if they did! 1. Re: [BDF] Elliott Family - Bushmead/Duloe/Eaton Socon
    2. Janice Peasnell
    3. Hello John, The information involving this family is complicated to say the least. The villages of Eaton Socon, Bushmead, Duloe and even St Neots gets thrown into the mix pretty regularly. I was contacted about 30 years ago by a member of the WRENCH family who had done a considerable amount of research on their family and they believed that Mary WRENCH and Ann CASE were sisters. I have found that both Mary and Ann ELLIOTT (my G/G.Grandmother) are recorded as being born in Bushmead - Mary's marrriage info on IGI and the 1881 Census, and Ann in the 1851 Census and her shipping records). In 1865 two sons of Mary and John WRENCH travelled to Maryborough in Queensland, they were Thomas and Jacob. Thomas married Mary CASE the daughter of Ann's husband Robert CASE and his first wife Mary WARREN and was known to be the nephew of Ann from Eaton Socon. Ann's shipping records show her parents as John and Jemima ELLIOTT. In both the 1841 and 1851 Census John and Jane (Jemima) ELLIOTT are living with son David in Duloe/Eaton Socon. I have written off for the Death certificate of Jemima ELLIOTT to see if there are any clues there that will tie this Jemima with Jane as the wife of John. I have started looking at the Marriage Witnesses to all of the children who were born to John ELLIOTT in Duloe and have found that almost all have family members as witnesses. For example When Lydia ELLIOTT and John CHEETHAM were married Ann Elliott and David Elliott were the witness. When Ann married Robert CASE, Lydia and John CHEETHAM were witnesses. When David ELLIOTT married Hannah PERKINS, Lydia and John CHEETHAM were witnesses. Regarding the Christening information - some children were christened in Bulk so it is quite possible that the Lydia you are looking at was Christened several years after her birth. I go by the ages given over multiple Census periods as a guide and certainly not the 1841 Census which was rounded down or up to the nearest 5. (Not in all cases but in quite a few). Re your question regarding their moving to Eaton Socon - All of the children of John and Jane/Jemima ELLIOTT were recorded as either being born in Bushmead or Duloe and both places are within walking distance of Eaton Socon and most of the Census papers mention Eaton Socon so it would depend on the document at the time and the person taking down the information. Most of the family look as if they could not write as they have a 'X' on the witness form of the wedding information. I do not know who put the information into IGI regarding the Mary ELLIOTT Christened in 1811 with parents William and Mary ELLET. It may be that Mary ELLET could be the sister of Jemima ELLIOTT as 'Lydia' appears in both families. Do you have access to the Christening documentation - if so do they have particulars regarding God Parents? Ann ELLIOTT who had four children after coming to Australia in 1856 named her children - Jemima, Lydia, Susanna and Hannah - after Mother and sisters. I hope this helps Kind regards Jan Peasnell On Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 4:39 PM, john partridge < [email protected]> wrote: > How do you know that Mary Elliott, who married John Wrench, was daughter of > John & Jemima ? > > Their 2nd child Lydia Ellet seems to have been christened in Colmworth in > 1832 while you say she's born 1817. > > & how/when did they get over to Eaton Socon area. Bedfordshire sites mentioned here: http://www.mkheritageopendays.com/ include Stevington Windmill "the only complete windmill in Beds" and Bromham Mill "A working 17th century watermill on the River Ouse" which could be of interest to anyone with milling ancestors. 3. Hi, In doing many census transcriptions in the UK, I've found the spelling "sempstress" quite often instead of seamstress. 3. Hello John, I am so very sorry it has taken me so long to reply. Thank you for this information, which I didn't know. Two of Mary and John Wrench's children, Thomas born in 1838 and Jacob born in 1846 came out to Australia. Thomas married Mary CASE in Maryborough Qld in 1867. Mary was the daughter of Robert CASE and his first wife Mary WARREN from Axminster. Robert's second wife was Ann ELLIOTT from Bushmead and Mary ELLIOTT's sister. Joseph married Isabella DAVIDSON in 1873 also in Maryborough. Isabella came from Lanarkshire. If you have additional information on the family I would be most grateful. Thanks again Kind regards Jan Peasnell On Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 4:10 AM, john partridge < [email protected]> wrote: > Hello Jan > > Mary Wrench baptised 19/05/1839 Gt Staughton was 1st child of John Wrench & > Mary Elliott; & she married Joseph Partridge b 1838 Eaton Socon. > > Joseph Partridge was grandson to Jonathan Partridge b 1789 Bletsoe, Beds & > is the older brother to my gt-gt-grandfather > > John & Mary Wrench had 8 other children between 1836 & 1850. > > If you want more info let me know > > Regards > > John Partridge > Bedford > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Janice Peasnell" <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Monday, August 04, 2008 10:40 AM > Subject: [BDF] Elliott Family - Bushmead/Duloe/Eaton Socon > > > > Hello Listers, > > > > I am researching the family of John and Jane (Jemima) ELLIOTT who were > > living in Duloe with their son David in the 1841/1851 Census.
