Hello Listers According to the 1851 census, Jacob Barber was born in Felmersham, Bedfordshire. His age on the census is 62. If someone has the resource could they check to see if this is correct? Thank you Dave from a very wet North Devon.

I would like to say a very big thank you, to those kind people who helped with my recent request for information regarding the Cardosi/Hinnigan family of Luton. Thanks to Stella I now have the marriage Cert for Rose Hinnigan and Pietro Cardosi. The above marriage took place at The Catholic Church of St Mary Help of Christians, Castle St, Luton on 23rd January 1918, both were living at 4 Windsor St, Luton. Pietros father was Leopoldo Cardosi, profession states Pietro was a Hat Block Maker and Leopoldo was formerly a Veterinary Surgeon. In 1901 Rose was single and living in Lincoln but I know nothing of her after that until her marriage. If anyone has any further information or advice on this family it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone. Elaine

Cannot help with your specific Pheasant, but I had a Catherine Pheasant marrying a Roger Favell in the Village of Great Barford just to the east of Bedford, over 100 years earlier on Feb 27th 1672. My interest being the Favell family. Might lead you to the right area. I've tried all of them and have found her 1797 death record in Baltimore (only the date in church records; cemetery was removed when a new church was built and headstones gone); probation of her will which I found in London; marriage record, also found in London, and no other info about her in St. Marylebone Church records. I also traveled to Tavistock where I found the marriage record of John and Rachel's daughter, Ann, among microfiche files in the public library of all places. Rachel is not my ancestor as I'm descended from John and another wife, but I'm curious about her because of the story of John and his first wife that has been passed down in our family. My uncles believed John came from the Isle of Jersey and left England because he hated the British. Perhaps Rachel Pheasant (Fezant, Fessant??) was French and also from Jersey? The search continues. Is anyone researching in the vicinity of the village of Yielden/Yeldon in Bedfordshire. My interest there is with the Hodgkins family. Forrest
Hi, Peter, Thanks for the suggestions. Janice >From Colmworth parish records; As well as Jemima, John & Lydia Gray had daughter Elizabeth baptised 30 Oct 1791 at Colmworth; & they also had a son William buried on 3 Sept 1789, but I could not find his baptism. There is a marriage at Colmworth on 28 Nov 1785 of John Gray, labourer to Lydia Goodman - so that's the Goodman Gray link for the Jemima G G Elliott b June 1855; daughter of David Elliot & Hannah Perkins.. There is Burial of John Gray labourer on 15 Apr 1792 & a marriage of Sam Burgoyne, widower of Eaton Socon to Letitia Gray, widow on 10 Dec 1804 -- although the banns at Eaton Socon name her correctly as Lydia Gray, of Colmworth. Lydia Goodman was baptised 1 Mar 1764 age 4, daughter of John & Eliz Goodman. >From the Eaton Socon PR, while there is a marriage of John Ellard to Jemima Gray on 15 Sept 1806, there is also a marriage of William Ellard to Mary Seymour on 26 Dec 1804 The marriage entries says all parties are from Eaton Socon. I will be interested to see if the Rusden people can help with a further generation on the ELLIOTT family. Dear Listers I have discovered a little goldmine of information if you have a relative who worked for Hayward Tyler Ltd in Luton during the period 1900 to 1950. In the Bedfordshire and Luton Archives they have a collection [reference SP] of three books, amongst others. The first gives the names of all 'shop floor' employees who had worked for the company and the other two books [one contains surnames with the letters A to L, and the other M to Z] give the names of those who had left the company and the reason for leaving. The information for each employee includes their date of birth, their address, occupation, weekly salary and their National Insurance number. The surnames are in alphabetical order. A potted history of the company is given in the index book for the SP records and so it is possible to relate company events with both local and worldwide events and so place your ancestor in a time context. I found the Archives staff very helpful, knowledgeable and always sincerely smiling. Kind regards David [PS Apologies if you already knew about the records]

"We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to ensure that the General Register Office of the ONS completes asap, as promised, the digitisation of, and online index to, the national BMD ledgers dating back to 1837 previously held in the Family Records Centre in London." Details of Petition: "The GRO's project to put 170 years of national BMD data online is at least twelve months behind schedule. Due to budgetary constraints and overspend on this and other IT projects, the GRO is now also unlikely to find funding in the near future to create the online index search facility that users of the new service will need to access it. The closure of the Public Search Room facilities at the Family Records Centre building in Myddleton Street in October 2007 and the end of access to the 6,550 physical ledgers held there was intended to go hand in hand with the arrival of online indexes to birth, marriages and death records, a promise that is now in the process of being broken." · Read the petition · Petitions homepage Read the Government's response The General Register Office (GRO) has a statutory obligation to make index data for registration records publicly available. Since the closure of the Family Records Centre in March 2008, it has provided copies of the indexes in microfiche format at several libraries and record offices across England and Wales. Many people who would previously have had to visit London to view the indexes are now able to do so much closer to home. Further details on where to search the full range of GRO indexes from 1837 to 2008 can be found at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/research/groindexes/holders_of_the_gro_indexes.asp GRO recognises that the creation of a publicly-accessible online index will be of even greater value to many family historians. GRO was transferred on 1 April 2008 from the Office for National Statistics to the Identity and Passport Service (IPS). IPS has confirmed that the creation of an accessible online index is a commitment which GRO will continue to work towards. A necessary pre-requisite is that all the registration records from 1837 must be created in a digitised format. The project to achieve this has encountered delays, with about half the records currently digitised. IPS is investigating a new project to complete the work and to address the requirement for an online index. At this stage options for the best method of implementation are being reviewed, and new timescales will be announced as soon as decisions based on the outcome of the review can be taken. -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter for private users. Hello John, Yes, you are more then probably right. I will be interested to see if the Rusden people can help with a further generation on the ELLIOTT family. Shelby, I'm not convinced that Rachel has connections in Bedfordshire, but I can appreciate the difficulties you are having. The Pheasant surname appears in a number of other counties. I think the place to concentrate is the 1795 marriage in St Marylebone. Have you tried at LDS to see if they have the parish records on film? Another thought might be to see if any shipping records are available for their migration to USA. You might also look for the reason for their migration? Where there relatives there that might give some clues to origins. I'm not familiar with US death records. Is it possible some information could be gleaned from her death record or a tombstone inscription?. Peter in Sydney
Hello David, Thank you for replying, John will now find himself rather distracted for a while. I have recently retired and now have more time to spend researching my family in depth. I visited Eaton Socon in June this year and was lucky enough to find the very informative books published by ESCAN, several of them mentioned members of the Elliott and Case families. Up until then I only had information on Ann and Mary. My G/G/Grandmother was the Ann Elliott who married Robert Case and she was his housekeeper before they married. I do not know if she was married before they married there is certainly no evidence of it from this end. (We did know she had been his housekeeper). I think I will just leave the Mary Elliott - John Wrench from Great Staughton as is, except of the Christening information. They were certainly the parents of Thomas and Jacob Wrench that came to Australia and they were both the nephews of Ann Elliott/Case All of the information I have regarding Ann Elliott shows her coming from Bushmead. I realise that Bushmead is close to Colmworth but until very recently Colmworth hadn't been mentioned. No, I have no information on John and Jemima's children having been christened in bulk but Mary and John WRENCH's children were, Thomas, Mary Ann and William on 19/5/1839, George and Sophia on 6/8/1843, Eliza and Joel on 7/5/1854. It would seem that the parents of Ann and Mary could have (I hope so) been John Ellard and Jemima Gray. Are the parish records of Colmworth available? do they go back very far? Are these records being looked at by the ESCAN group, they are doing such a wonderful job in the Eaton Socon area. Thank you again for answering my request, Kind regards Jan Peasnell/Melbourne/Oz On Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 2:44 AM, David <[email protected]> wrote: > I've been working with John on this Elliott family, but he's a bit > distracted at the moment having become a grandfather earlier today. > > We think that his Mary Elliott/Ellet is the one baptised on 3 March 1811 at > Eaton Socon, daughter of William and Mary.
