My thanks to all who have replied and the advice offered. This brickwall is going to be a tangled web maybe not of deceit but dialect and spelling Perhaps I should try another tack and hunt the house in LONDON in a census. Thanks again for all ideas and suggestions Maisie
Maisie, Are you specifically looking for ancestors or descendants of William Page and Elizabeth Shearhog m 1825 at Puddington. Beds? As we generally work backwards, one presupposes that you have some idea of children, birthplaces and death details for William & Elizabeth. As you say, there are very few entries for the surname, so any extra data you may have might save a lot of work for those trying to assist. Peter

Thanks Barbara for working out that Martha Keep question. She was buried 1 Apr 1838 aged 34, and the daughter Mary Ann was buried 10 Jun 1838 in Marston. Not sure where Martha (Burridge) Keep comes from. I haven't found a baptism yet. I don't know who started the claim that Enoch's Martha Daniels is the one from Southill. David's research suggests otherwise. Even the IGI has an extracted marriage for the Southill Martha Daniels to Joseph Crossley. I think we all need to abandon that theory and look further for Martha Daniels' place of origin and her parentage (if that still exists). Good luck. Thank you all for your suggestions. My late husband's grandmother was an Alling (Allen) so there was a lot of info at hand in family bibles, etc. and I have begun trying to bring all the families from this info together under one family tree. I have noticed a few errors on the Internet where people have posted their family trees so I've avoided using any of this info as I can't be sure it is accurate. Thank you all again. Adrienne
Barbara, Stephen McDonald in Canada has traced the family back to around 1550 and posted the Family Tree at Rootsweb. See http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=mcdonald_lewistn&id=I01664 I always advise double checking, as you never know the quality of theresearch, but this looks pretty good. Hi Maisie I have found Elizabeth on the IGI as Shearhog dau of John & Sarah, c Puddington/Poddington. As this name is very similiar to the many variants on Shearwood in Beds, I thought it likely that it is transcribed very differently in the census. In 1841 in Puddington/Poddington is John Sharwood 75 Ag Lab born out of County & Sarah with the same info. My Shearwoods have variants like Sharog, Sharove, Sherrogg etc and have been a nightmare to find, must be the local accent! From the 1800s onwards they settled into either Shearwood or Sherwood. kind Regards Norina > From: cmwhite@eastcoast.co.za > To: bedford@rootsweb.com > Date: Mon, 9 Nov 2009 05:27:26 +0200 > Subject: [BDF] SHEARHOG family of PUDDINGTON > > Once again my Northants relations are taking me into Beds > > Can SKS shed any light on this family who seem to have done a really good > disappearing act from the FBMD , IGI and Census > > My interest starts with Elizabeth who married William PAGE 24 October 1825 > in Puddington. > > All and any help most welcome > > Maisie > > > > > The List Guidelines > > http://bedfordrootsweb.blogspot.com/ > > The Bedfordshire Surnames List > > http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~hughw/bedf.html > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to BEDFORD-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message _________________________________________________________________ New Windows 7: Find the right PC for you. I've seen the modern SHERWOOD/SHEARWOOD surname with many variant spellings in early times so wonder if SHEARHOG is sometimes SHE(A)RWOOD too. Barbara, You're looking in the wrong time frame. If he was 36 in 1901, his birth year should be 1864-1865. However, I wouldn't trust his age to just one census. There is a birth registered in Bedford City in Dec 1865. A map shows Roxton is only 10 miles away. You should also look for births of Thomas and Joseph. They were registered at St Neots, just a few miles from Roxton. You'll find them in Roxton in 1881 census with parents William & Hannah. I can't find John. He may be mispelt, but perhaps he is overseas with the military and comes back to join the police force. Try 1871 & 1891 census. As for the marriage, 1857 is before he was born. Which leaves the 1882 marriage to Mary Ann Brace as most likely. Look for her in 1881 and confirm her birthplace from 1891 or 1901 census. There is a slight possibility that they married overseas. Peter
Good morning; There is a James Dorrington age 18 listed on the ship Catherine that left England in 1851 to go to South Australia. On same voyage are a few others from Bedford that were all in the Bedford Union workhouse up to the point of departure. Seems they are all emigrating on assisted passages arranged by the wotkhouse. In the workhouse Indoor Relief ledger for that period it has a Jonas Darrringtion paid for out of the common fund. I think he is son of John & Sarah Darrington of Roxton. Hi Barbara I know it looks to be a likely match; the name's right, the date looks right, but Martha Daniels baptised 1771 at Southill wasn't the one who married Enoch Keep. She married Joseph Crossley in Southill in 1795. As Bev mentioned, the 1791 Marston Moretaine marriage entry shows she was otp, not of the parish of Southill. The Daniels burials in Marston Moretaine, that Bev found, look to be worthy of further investigation as being possible parents of Martha David On Mon, Nov 9, 2009 at 2:44 AM, Barb & Dusty Miller <bardus@xtra.co.nz>wrote: > Hi Bev, > > Have some info for you, > > The Martha who needed assistance in 1830 was Martha KEEP nee BURRIDGE wife > of Joel KEEP who died 6 Oct 1830 in Marston Mortaine. > They married 7 Jun 1824 had 2 children that I know of. > Wm KEEP bn abt 1824 and Mary Ann KEEP bn abt 1829 > > Martha DANIELS bpt was 29 Sept 1771 Southill marr Enoch 30 Nov 1791 Marston > Mortaine. > Barbara > bardus@xtra.co.nz > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "bev bonning" <kosan@optusnet.com.au> > To: <bedford@rootsweb.com>; <bedford-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Monday, November 02, 2009 9:19 PM > Subject: Re: [BDF] Re Daniels & Slatcherand Keep > > > > Hello to all following this thread > > > > The burial date for Martha (Daniels) Keep in Marston Moretaine 3 May 1835 > > is > > supported by the following: > > 11 Apr 1835 Enoch was paid One Shilling for his wife being ill. > > 30 Apr 1835 Enoch was paid Three Shillings for the woman who attended his > > wife's corpse. > > > > Enoch received regular payments from the Overseers of the Poor Accounts > > from > > 1829. If he was 36 in 1901 doesn't that imply a birth in 1865, not 1855? You can find all of them on Family Search using batch no: C002392 John William Darrington christened 29 Oct 1865 (- GRO Bedford 3b 331 in DEC 1865) Samuel Thomas Darrington christened 29 May 1870 Arthur Joseph Darrington christened 26 Nov 1871 Parents William & Hannah (as been mentioned) There are 77 Darringtons recorded so there must be several families, no doubt all related, but be careful as there are more than one with the same name in the same year!
