    2. Thank you for your replies. Daniel left N.Z in 1900 he appears in the 1901 cencus as a widower in a boarding house. living on Pte means. He was born at chipping north son of Augustine and Rebecca I have confirmed all this. He left behind 9 children the youngest 5yrs old. Why I mention the money is that after maybe Emma death some money was sent back to the children after advertising in N Z for the children. Decendents alive today were only children when the money arrived but it made a big difference to their lives. What they want to find out was who sent it.If I can find Emmas death it may help in newspaper research. The descendants are in their 80's and has approached our society to find out. I have spent 2 years tracking and getting certificates etc but have come to a stand srtill with Emma Any help would be great. Cheers Maureen Carterton Historical Society

    3. Maureen, You don't say when Daniel returned from NZ, when he married Emma or if you've looked at 1901 census. All these would provide vital clues. If he wasn't in 1901 census, you'd probably need trade or post office directories c1901-1911 to find the store. But you don't know a location. Look at FreeBMD and 1901 census site to get extra data. Emma would be 59 when Daniel died. She could remarry. While FreeBMD stops around 1930, Ancestry provides data up to 2006. Peter

    3. Hi Maureen I only find an Oxfordshire born Daniel CROSS in 1861 & 1871 in England The English pension started in 1908 for 70 year olds and was heavily means tested If he was retired at 59 he most likely had either money in the bank or property and was living off the income from that I am not sure why you would think he would send money back to New Zealand ? If he did not contact them you can only assume he didn't want to, what makes you think he should have done Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Could s.k.s help with this family > Daniel ward Cross born 1852 oxford married (bigamist wife and family in > New Zealand) Emma Geary born 1871northchurch lived at 5 Dudley st bedford > in the 1911 cencus. 3. Hi Peter, I have tried a Mary Ann Darlow to a John DARRINGTON in all England and Wales. None comes up. I tried a Brace marrying a Darlow none in the time line. Only one that comes up is Mary Ann BRACE. We sent for the 1911 census and she was 49 years old which would tie in with the 1861 birth. bn in Chawston Roxton, she said she was still married living in Chelmsford Middlesex, but haven't found John yet. He may have gone away for a while or still in Kent. The Mary Ann you found bn 3.3.1861 was she bn in or near Chawston? Thanks for your wonderful help. 3. Hi Barbara John William Darrington and Mary Ann Brace married in Dec quarter of 1882 (Bedford 3b 780 is the GRO ref no) This is just outside the Roxton marriages in the IGI list, unless someone will kindly do a look up for us at Bedford County Hall. Three Mary Brace's! - Mary Ann 3/3/61, Mary Hanes 2/3/62, Mary Ellen 3/9/66 so we need to be sure which one Stephen's list has Mary Ann Darlow I have realised that we will actually be distantly related. 3. Actually, the family seems to come from Pytchley or Isham in Northamptonshire, but with both locations right on the border, it might be a case of the border being relocated quite often. I've become intrigued by the surname. For what should be a simple one to find, nothing seems to match. There's four births, six marriages and five deaths on FreeBMD and hardly any census records. That's probably indicative of the propensity for spelling errors. As an example I tried to follow James Shearhog 1855-1933. His birth is registered Mar 1855 as Kettering as James SHEIRHOGG. He appears as James SHEARHOG in 1861 census at Pytchley with widowed father George b1831 and aunt Sarah b1834. I haven't found him in 1871. In 1881 census he is James SPERHAG a policeman lodging at Preston in Lancashire. In June that year he marries as James SHEARHOG to Margaret. In 1891 census of Lancashire he is James SHEARHOG at Preston with wife Margaret. In 1901, he is James SHEARHOY, perhaps a simple mistrancsription. Margaret SHEARHOG died Gastang Sept 1929 and James SHEARHOG dies Preston June 1933. At least his tombstone looks to have his name right. Peter
