    3. Peter, I can claim she is my 3rd Great Grandmother because of the census records My 2nd Great Grandmother Fanny E Armstrong Married William Payne in the 1861 census Fanny is living with her Mother Sarah Armstrong in Eaton Socon. Sarah then is traced in the 1841 Census with her parents John Armstrong and Elizabeth. I have a feeling that she never married and used her maiden name for both her children. Just wanted to see who was researching this line and if they had the same thought. 3. Can anyone help with this William Sharp(e)? I can't find a birth c1815 or a marriage c1840. Census shows his birthplace as Luton. William & Martha have children Francis 1840, Edwin 1842, Alfred 1844, Flora 1857 and Clara 1858. All are registered at Luton. He is a grainer & decorator in 1851 & 1861. Peter

    3. Hello Peter, "In theory", if he married after 1 July 1837, then he should be in the GRO Marriages Index - but clearly he's not been found. There are several possibles here... 1) the GROIndexes are known to be well-less-than complete; 2) there are pages 'missing' from the indexes [but perhaps unlikely to break a volume at 'Sh', although it happens with TYSOEs!]; 3) his name could've been mistranscribed in either the GRO Index or FreeBMD/other modern transcripts; 4) they married "abroad" - anywhere other than England or Wales; 5) they never married at all - or waited many years.... OTOH it might be worthwhile searching on Martha - although you'd need to buy at least one birth cert [probably the best being Francis William, 1840 DecQ, Luton, 6 95] to find her maiden name. I take it that you've been unable to find the family in 1841 - for that may throw a little additional light. [I see they were in Lambeth in 1851- and in Bedford itself in 1861 - so they evidently moved about a bit.] As for his birth/baptism he merely states "Bedfordshire" in 1851 and "Luton" in 1861 (and, in passing, Flora & Clara were then shown as born Bedford), although he ages consistently from 35 to 45 in the intervening period. If all true, then he'd've been born 1815/16 - and "somewhere" in Bedfordshire. Although I regularly vary my birthplace/residence depending on where I am when asked [if in Worcestershire - Droitwich; elsewhere in England - Worcester; 'anywhere abroad' - Birmingham] because all the questioner really *needs* is a general idea. This method saves the additional exchange of "Where's THAT?" / "Near Worcester [or Birmingham]" - a place the questioner has heard of :-) Luton's a good 20 miles from Bedford - and if he was born in some small hamlet/village within 4 or 5 miles of Luton, he could be forgiven for rounding-off. And there's always the possibility that his parents were non-conformists of some sort, and that their chapel didn't turn its registers in to the PRO when required to in [about] 1850... 3. Betty I've read the other replies. Searching the 1891 Census looking for a Caroline, born 1858 in Aspley Guise, showed 3 possible husbands; William Jenkins Frederick Plumb William Cooper I had no luck searching for their marriages in 1887 Jun Q on freeBMD. But if you check FreeBMD home page for this sentence A breakdown by event and year can be viewed here and follow through to check the coverage, you'll find that about 50% is still to be done for that quarter. 3. Hi I am always curious as to WHY one might say that people didn't travel around England at a particular time? Folk were crossing to Europe, emigrating to the States and other colonies, trading & fighting battles so why should we assume they didn't pop across a few Counties?. In 1803 Bedfordshire men were sent away to training camps for military purposes and sometimes wives & families followed. The same thing happened in other Counties because of threats from France. There are several books and online sites which give historical timelines and you need to take into account social and economic circumstances. One example might be the importation of Scottish stonemasons to assist Ireland with rebuilding after a natural disaster in the late 1700s. Depending on their occupation people moved with their employers to or from Country estates as servants etc. Again, depending on their status they moved for education, employment or because of some particular family circumstance. I was misled very early in my research by someone who advised me that folk very rarely moved further than 5 miles from their home village! It took me sometime to realise this was far from accurate! My families certainly travelled <1803> and not a Gypsy among them! 3. IANAE, but travel seems to have been difficult, dangerous and expensive, with fewer and poorer quality roads and less reliable means of transport. We do know that some of the reasonably affluent did travel, and that people were prepared to walk far further than modern school kids, but with physically onerous work a necessity for many, there would have been relatively few with sufficient time and energy to wander very far without very good reason to do so. Skilled craftsmen moved quite extensively during the middle ages but the Reformation drastically affected such things as the building of new church properties. I think you may find that there was geographic mobility of skilled craft- and tradespeople, but far less for agricultural workers, and until the first world war, England was predominantly an agricultural society. News reports are usually of the unexpected, people doing unusual things, so reports of travel occur *because* travel is unusual. But my gt-grandmother took *two* long sea journeys to S. America in the nineteenth century! Three of her sons had emigrated to Buenos Aires. Joan. 3. I've been looking at the page numbers for marriages in Ampthill 1887 on FreeBMD and something is wrong with the entry for Caroline Read as her page number 659 doesn't fit within the range of numbers. I then looked at the actual page on findmypast.com and it clearly says page 659. I'm guessing that an error occured when the books were typed up and the one way to verify is order the marriage cert from the GRO and have them do a search. 3. Hello Mary There are quite a few Holt births at Holme on Spalding Moor which must be connected to Elizabeth Holt. Its quite unusual for someone to travel that distance around 1800 unless she went to stay with a relative in Odell, so unfortunately the bigger mystery remains unsolved at present I would think of her kindly as she was bringing up her Holt grandchildren who otherwise would have been in the workhouse. The following deaths are recorded - (From NBI) William Holt, buried 15 Apr 1847 -age 35 - Odell All Saints Sabina Isabella Holt, buried 18 May 1847 - age 30 - Odell All Saints Elizabeth Holt, buried 27 May 1853, age 14 - Harrold St Peter & All Saints Peter Jarman -----Original Message----- From: bedford-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:bedford-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Mary Bateman Sent: 21 November 2009 15:07 To: bedford@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BDF] HOLT Family - ODELL 1811-1880 Peter, Thank you for the information of the Holt family. 3. John, Many thanks for the information about the Holt family. It is helpful to find that William was illegitimate [not really wanted though!]; I had wondered. 3. The Elizabeth, George & William Holt grandchildren on 1851 seem to be children of William Holt & Sabina (Swannell) So this confirms that the Elizabeth Holt who married William Savage in 1809 was the mother of the illrg. William It'd be good to check the William/Sabina 1838 marriage to see if his father is named. Anyway seems both William & Sabina Holt died June 1847 in Bedford according to FreeBMD John ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Jarman" <p.jarman@ntlworld.com> To: <bedford@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, November 18, 2009 10:59 PM Subject: Re: [BDF] HOLT Family - ODELL 1811-1880 > John & Mary > > Looks like it may be Elisabeth Holt, christened 13 June 1790, Holme on > Spalding Moor, East Riding on IGI batch no.
