Catherine Miskell marriage bond 12 April 1787 Richmond Co. VA. Her father was William Miskell, also Richmond Co. VA. Obituary: "Sir Jennings Beckwith died at Mount Airy, Richmond Co., on the 13th of November..." Richmond Enquirer Dec. 1, 1835. Worth reading for the description of him. He left his property in Virginia to his two Beckwith grandsons. No mention of the reported 1,280 acres he had owned in Missouri. It would be worth looking for the deeds. His father was Sir Jonathan Beckwith b. 14 Nov. 1720 Richmond Co., Signed the Northern Neck Declaration (of Independence), m. Rebecca Barnes of VA, died Dec. 1796 (extracts from Augusta Co. Records vol. 2 p. 65 Jonathan's father was Sir Marmaduke Beckwith, born Aldborough Eng. 1687, emigrated 1700, County Clerk of Richmond Co. 1708-1780, died 1780 (from a highly inaccurate source, "The Beckwiths," Paul T. Beckwith, Munsell's Sons 1891) I've been trying to figure out why Jennings moved from VA to Missouri. One reason was probably his preference for frontier. It also possible that he wanted to remove his slave family from the fierce VA laws on miscegenation to the much more fluid frontier culture, based on the accounts of how he raised those children. At least I hope so. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
