There are photos of him and a history of his life as a fur trader. He was born in St. Louis, MO sometime between 1798-1803, but the author was unable to determine the name of his mother at the time the book was written. There was a lot of confusion over the name of Miskell and who it actually belonged to. There is a second book (or should I say first) that was published in the 1800s and was dictated to a guy named Bonner by our guy. I have included a link that will give the bibliographic details of the two books: http://www.beckwourth.org/Biography/lastyears.html Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Sir Jennings, the older son of Sir Marmaduke Beckwith, lived in the Northern Neck of Virginia before moving his second (slave) family to Missouri. Jim Beckwourth was probably the oldest child in the second family and born around 1800. They moved before 1810. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Marmaduke's legal wife died sometime after 1790 and his second family probably started after her death, based on ages of children. Jim was the oldest. The family moved from Virginia to Missouri sometime before 1810. Marmaduke filed several documents in Missouri to manumit these children. They were literate. In 1822 Jim joined one of the first fur trading expeditions from St. Louis. He lived extensively among the Indians and was famous as a Civil War scout. There is a pass named for him in California. There is a documented biography available (again, I don't have my notes with me) that includes a photograph of him. Let me know if you want citations when I have access. In does give his parents information. His mother was name is not proven but is listed as Misskill and his father is Sir Jennings Beckwith. I believe she was an African slave and he was a younger son of an aristocratic family. They lived in the Upper Neck (?) of Virginia and moved to St. Louis, MO about 1800. I believe that is where they married. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I ask because...black in Virginia..does not mean they were from Africa and a slave. I have read they were married. Although it was aganist the law there were marriage of many mixed races. Examples from my family ...my roots go deep in VA. The people of mixed race and of different faiths moved into the mountains of Virginia. My Maucks were black and not from Africa. They came from Germany in the early 1700's to PA then to VA. They married Irish and American Indains. They fled Germany beacuse they were Luthans by faith. My gggg uncle who was a Sheffey was a fiddler in the mountains. He married a black woman. I have not found that she was a slave or from Africa. These people worked and fought hard for freedoms. They fought people who were like Anthony Johnson, Jamestown VA. abt 1653 he petitioned the courts of Great Britain for the right to own slaves ...he was the 1st and he was black maybe from Africa...The Robertson from Pr Wm Co VA black ..who were black slave owners. I could go on just with my families from VA. Good fought back the bad. Good of many races and places and so were the bad !!!
