Author: orichard133 Surnames: Beckwith Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.beckwith/1293/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am writing because I've been looking for things on my tree pretty far out and decided to come back to an earlier point. I noticed that my Great2grandfather didn't really match my presumed Great3grandfather. My G2 is named William E Beckwith (1874) and I have found him in censuses with my grandfather, who I am sure of. My presumed G3 was Charles Wesley Beckwith (1847) son of William Erl Beckwith (1813). My problem is the Charles Wesley had a William G not a William E. I don't find any William Es (earlier than the ones I know) on this site or any in a digital search of Paul Edmond Beckwith's 1891 book "The Beckwiths." I also looked through a paper copy of Albert Clayton Beckwith's 1899 book "Marvin Beckwith of Southington" and found nothing. I was told that William E's dad worked the whaling ships and that his wife left him and he remarried. I don't get two wives for Charles Wesley. I did see that his presumed grandfather - William Erl Beckwith -- did have two wives. Perhaps that's who the story was about. Any help would be great (even if it's saying that William G and E are likely the same). Thanks in advance, Richard Beckwith Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Henry Wager, Asa Beckwith and his sons, Asa, Jr., Lemuel, Reuben and Wolcott, came to the Mohawk country in 1789..." Catherine Miskell marriage bond 12 April 1787 Richmond Co. VA. Her father was William Miskell, also Richmond Co. VA. Obituary: "Sir Jennings Beckwith died at Mount Airy, Richmond Co., on the 13th of November..." Richmond Enquirer Dec. 1, 1835. Worth reading for the description of him. He left his property in Virginia to his two Beckwith grandsons. No mention of the reported 1,280 acres he had owned in Missouri. It would be worth looking for the deeds. His father was Sir Jonathan Beckwith b. 14 Nov. 1720 Richmond Co., Signed the Northern Neck Declaration (of Independence), m. Rebecca Barnes of VA, died Dec. 1796 (extracts from Augusta Co. Records vol. 2 p. 65 Jonathan's father was Sir Marmaduke Beckwith, born Aldborough Eng. 1687, emigrated 1700, County Clerk of Richmond Co. 1708-1780, died 1780 (from a highly inaccurate source, "The Beckwiths," Paul T. Beckwith, Munsell's Sons 1891) I've been trying to figure out why Jennings moved from VA to Missouri. One reason was probably his preference for frontier. It also possible that he wanted to remove his slave family from the fierce VA laws on miscegenation to the much more fluid frontier culture, based on the accounts of how he raised those children. At least I hope so. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
