Living in New London Ct People in household: Lura Beckwith age 12 Elias Beckwith age 14 Edna Beckwith age 37 Edna Beckwith age 15 James W Beckwith age 18 (possible birth year 1842) Note middle inital for him. If he is a Jr. it's probable his father is a James W too. Harriet Beckwith age 8 Lena Beckwith age 3 I found a cemetery record that might relate: Windham Co., Ct Windham Cemetery James W. Beckwith, Corporal, d. Feb. 2 1918, age 70 years, Company A., 3rd Artillery, Rhode Island Volunteers, G.A.R. marker and flag. Maria L. Beckwith, wife of James W., born 1829 (? she would be several years older than her husband) died 1918. I also found where one of James and Edna's sons was listed as a teemster, and one worked in a cotton mill, but I didn't write it down, so at this point I've forgotten. I will go back tomorrow and look again. I have done searches under each son on several genealogy sites and in Paul Beckwith's book. I even started looking for older Beckwith families in Waterford (sometimes looking up their families gives clues). I am intrigued by a Richard Beckwith b. 1782 d. 1866. He could be the right age to be James's father or uncle, but that is a long shot. His wife was named Frelove Beckwith. Maybe someone on the board has more info on this line. This family has to have family graves somewhere in Waterford, Montville,Colchester or New London. My husband's favorite hobby is restoring old VW "bugs". We have had several, and yes, they are so dependable(if you overlook the clutch cable). We can tell stories about how everyone in the family knows how to replace a clutch cable while stranded on the side of the highway. Our daughter has a purple 1969 one that she and her husband enter in car shows( and win). Our best one was a 1959 VW camper, it was a beauty. We were crazy for selling it. I needed it. It's reassuring to know that someone else has hit a road block in their searches too. By the way, a friend of mine bought a used red Volkswagon covertible from a Police Officer named Huggins, back in the 90s. He was from Canaan, CT. He could be a relative of your line. It was a dependable little car. It served him well for years as he drove it back and forth to his job with the State, from New Britain to Southbury, every day. Thank you for your assistance. I was going bonkers for a while. I went out today and took a 5 mile hike around the West Hartford reservoir to soothe the soul. I feel better now. Thank you, W. V. Somewhere your line should connect with the rest of the CT. Beckwith's. After that it will be a piece of cake. I am suspecting that James may have had a first name other than James, but that's just a thought. Yes, this is addicting and can be your first waking thought. I have a couple of lines like that. I have several James in my Beckwith line as well as a Harriet, and have found they tend to re-use family names a lot. Maybe we will connect. I'm going to try a few more options for you today. It is immensely appreciated. Lena was my Great Grandmother. I wasn't aware that she was so well liked in the community. I have been to Colchester and found it to be an incredibly warm and friendly town. They have a beautiful town green that is right out of colonial America. I have spent hundreds of hours trying to find who James Beckwith's parents were. I wake up each day at around noon and search 'till 5 or 6 in the morning. It is starting to affect my health, I think. I think I am becoming obsessed with it. I can't stop and I don't how to if I wanted to. I have to take a ride down to the Waterford City Hall and go through their records. I don't know what else to do at this point. Thank you so much for the help. You can search through my tree and see if anything helps you in any of your searches. Most of the family is done to England and Scotland on most sides. Ignore the Johnson side as it is in error. Both Johnsons list their parents as coming from Connecticut but I unwisely took the advise from one of those hint leaves and went with Rhode Island. I have to delete it. Everything else was gone through with a fine toothed comb for accuracy. Even though Elizabeth went by the name "Edna", Elizabeth might be on her birth certificate so it might just help after all. My Aunt is in her 80s and does not have too much longer to go and I promised myself I would get this done before she died. Her Mother died when she was young and her Father was a horrible man who never visited her after the 1930s. She would love to know about the rest of the good family members who she never met or knew about. Thank you very, very, much, W. V. She was born in Waterford April 25 1855., daughter of James and Elizabeth Beckwith. No Edna mentioned as her mother. Survivors include a sister Mattie Arnold of New London Brothers: Jeremiah, Allen, and Isham. I also searched through "The Beckwiths" by Paul Beckwith but can't find this family. I did find an 1880 census of Montville, New London, CT that has a James Beckwith age 70, a stonemason, with wife Edna, age 59, and daughter Martha, age 15. He married an Edna (b.1824) and then moved to Montville, CT. and then to New London, CT. They had 12 children who were as follows: Ellen (b.1840), James Jr. (b. 1843), Edna (b. 1845), Laura (b. 1851), Elias (b. 1848), Harriet (b. 1854), Jeremiah (b. 1854), Eleanor "Lena" (b. 1857), Isham (b. 1858), Allen G. (b. 1861), Mary (b. 1864), and Martha (b. 1866). James was a farmer. I don't know what more info I can provide to help find his parents and her parents too but, I will try if you think of anything. Lena (b.1857) was my Great Grandmother who married an Albert Johnson (b.1850) of Montville, CT. She remarried a William Sherman of Colchester and died in 1943. She was buried with her two sons, Fred and George Johnson, who died young. They are buried in the Linwood Cemetery in Colchester, Connecticut. Her other children were Bertha, Charles Ira (1875)! , my Grandfather, and Albert Henry of Montville. Please help. I am trying to get this done before the only surviving member of my Father's side of the family dies. I want to give this to her before she dies. I will pay $200.00 to the first person who can provide the names of the parents of James Beckwith (b. 1814-1815) and his wife Edna along with verifiable proof. Author: MelissaMorris86 Surnames: Beckwith, Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.beckwith/1259/mb.ashx Message Board Post: So there is a ton of Byron de La beckwiths in my family. I think 4 or 5. Well, One is my 6th cousin and he was the murderer from Mississippi who killed the black guy. This Byron was pure evil. Well I found out his grandfather was also Byron de la Beckwith. This Byron was awesome. Well, to me he is because he lived about 10minutes from where I do now. He was in Lodi, CA I read at Time.com (there was an article about the murdere Byron and they mentioned his grandfather). So I did some research on him. My husband works at a winery in Lodi, Ca. My best friends family owns it. Well their family member was Joseph Spenker and he must have known my great great great great uncle Byron! It was a super duper small town. And Byron was the druggest (like a pharmacist I guess) and he was the 2nd postmaster they had, he also had a telegraph machine in his store. He helped start and build the firls Lodi Hall Association. They had their town meetings there. Then he also had a plan for this D! am that is in Woodbridge, Ca (which is connected with Lodi, CA) Well, it was made kinda crappy and so he had an idea to make it better and they built it! Then he had an idea later about building an irrigation system that would give over 100,000 acres south of the Mokelumne River water. So He got them to build all this irrigation and that is also how today we have Lodi Lake. I have swam in it many times too. He later moved to sacramento, ca and lived along the Sacramento river. You can read all the tidbits on him at http://www.woodbridge.us/history08.htm This is amazing to me because we thought all our family was from Oklahoma. They have lived where I grew up and went to school! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have now figured out that the California Silas Beckwith probably did not come from the Crawford, Illinois Benjamin (1796-1871) after all. I am currently researching whether he is the son of Benjamin Brooks Beckwith (1786-1831) of New Hampshire. BBB has a son Silas born in 1818. The Beckwiths book has a note saying that Silas "married and removed to California in 1888". (I think it should be 1848 as he would likely not get married and move at age 70!) I have the page from "the Beckwiths" but not sure I have the notes you describe from Erickson's. This can be convoluted and imprecise!! Oh well! It's fun! Thanks again. Author: delosatsea Surnames: Beckwith Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.beckwith/1256.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hey, My husband is researching Beckwiths. Evidently there are more Silas, Isaac and Benjamin Beckwiths than you can (insert cliche) at. Silas B 1751-1834 had three wives, plus a bunch of brothers. Two sets of kids. and two of his wives were named Anna so it's a lot to untangle. Silas 1751 born in Lyme, CT, father Benjamin, 1st set of sons Richard, Daniel and Henry (all b 1770-1776) Then he moved to Watertown NY (1777) and had another set of kids (b 1777- 1800): Isaac Beckwith Anna Y Beckwith Seth Smith Beckwith Benjamin Beckwith Silas Beckwith Samuel Beckwith Then somewhere between 1820-30 he moved to IL, stopping to have the occasional kid on the way? So there is a branch - I think of Henry - left in upstate NY and another in CT and my husband's branch, the first child of second marriage (another Isaac) who migrated to NC, just to make it hard on descendants. Do you have these online notes? Silas Beckwith, excerpted from "The Beckwiths", Paul Edmond Beckwith and Notes from Mary and Wally Erickson hope this is useful christine Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
