Tim, might your Merrill Beasley have been Mearill Beazley who witnessed the sale of a negro woman named Luse... to JOhn Beazley from Samson Rentfrow of Franklin Co., Ga Apr 8, 1814 (Deeds of Franklin County, Georgia 1784-1826: Acker; page 314)? This JOhn Beazley appears to connect to me and I haven't seen the name Mearill (?) anywhere else. thanks, David
Don't think it's the same, but like you said there's probably a connection there somewhere. Rumor has it that my William Henry was a real gambler, who at one point ended up with a 1000 acre farm (I guess from someone who owed him a gambling debt). Interesting, huh?
AnniePauline: I doubt that this is the William Henry Beasley that you're looking for but there is probably a connection somewhere. My William Henry Beasley was born about 1822 and died about 1823. He was born to Merrill Beasley and Anne Lynton Bragg who lived in Orange County, North Carolina. Let me know if you see a connection. Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/plC.2ACEB/1077 Message Board Post: The following obit is here with permission of the Challis Messenger in Challis, Idaho. Margaret Sarah Beasley Roe Margaret Sarah Beasley Roe, 79, passed away at her home in Challis November 12, 2002. She was born December, 22, 1922 at her Grandma and Grandpa Beasley's home in Shelley, Idaho. She was the first child of Hilda May Boyce and Buford John Beasley and the first grandchild on both sides of the family. Her childhood days were spent in and around the Shelley area where her father worked for various farmers. Margaret became her mother's little helper as her sisters and brothers were born into the family. She was a homemaker even when she was very young. Joining the family over the years were George, Margie, Darlene, Joyce, Bernice, Floy, LaVaun, twins Noel and Nona, Cheron, Joan, Glenna and Deanna. Margaret was known to her family as the peacemaker. Margaret went to a different school every year of her school days. During her early schol years, she enjoyed dancing. During her later school years she enjoyed playing basketball and baseball. After her ninth grade year, help was needed at home. Then, as it always has been in her life, family came first. The desire to finish high school never left her and she earned her GED in Challis in 1976. In March of 1940 Margaret met Howard Louis Cutler. They were married on September 7, 1940. In 1941, Martha Ellen came into their lives, followed in 1942 by Howard Raymond. Howard, serving in the Navy on the USS Leopold was killed in action in March of 1944, leaving Margaret a widow at the age of 21. She met and married Selby Lane Hansen when Selby returned from his service in the Navy. The young family lived in Fort Hall where Selby and his borthers farmed. Peggy Lane joined the family in 1947 and soon after they moved to the yellow house at Bayhorse Bridge, 13 miles from Challis, in the summer of 1948. This remained their home until a new house was built about a mile away in 1961. While at the yellow house, the family grew. Daniel Benny was born in 1951 at the hospital in Challis and Shayne Eugene joined the family in 1956. Margaret and Selby acquired many friends in Challis up and down the river. They belonged to a supper pinochle club and square danced every week with the Clay Diddle Hopper Club in Clayton for many years. There are fond memories of wienie roasts, picnics, family reunions in Stanley and branding at the cattle guard. Margaret's role in most of these events was feeding everyone. Margaret was a multi-talented woman. Her repertoire of skills included sewing, sometimes without patterns, embroidery, crochet, macrame, playing the guitar in younger days, dancing, bowling, making crafts, cooking, and of course, singing. Margaret belonged to many card clubs and made many lifelong friends at these weekly parties. She shared her love of cards and games with her family and friends. There are many memories of her favorites: Yahtzee, the magical broom game, airplane rides, bingo and the Legion Hall and any card game. She enjoyed taking picutres and chronicled her family story from her teen years to the present. Pictures played a big part in her life throughout the years: every visit brought the latest round of pictures of children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren. Margaret had many, many houseplants: 96 varieties at one time, which seemed to thrive in her loving care. She enjoyed fixing hair and giving perms while she lived in Fort Hall and Challis. She also loved to laugh and always had a new joke that you had to read. Being the crafty person she was, she opened and operated Margaret's Hobby Shop out of one room of her home for many years. Margaret's greatest skill was probably cooking. She was always trying new recipes and was a wonderful cook. During her years at the yellow house, summers were filled with lots of company and Margaret prepared three meals a day for at least 20 people or more. There was always lots of fun in the evening after dinner when family and friends would sing, roll the rug back and dance or play a variety of games. Many evenings were spent listening to favorite programs on the radio. The yollow house and the new house were always filled with extended family that Margaret and Selby were helping through school. There were brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, friends, children of friends and foster children who lived and learned in their loving home. She believed in the value of education and was so very proud of the accomplishments of her family in that arena. For herself, she always strived to learn: hence her love for game shows, numbers and crossword puzzles. As for numbers, she turned them upside down and all around to make them fit the situation she needed them for. She had many self-created number puzzles. Her final one we are sure she left us to figure out. Margaret was a member of the Legion Auxiliary and made sure her daughters and grandchildren were members also by paying their dues until they were 18. Margaret was a 4-H leader in cooking and sewing for many years. She was active in the LDS Church. She was president of the MIA, primary president and secretary at different times, a junior Sunday school coordinator and also a teacher at different times in Sunday school, primary and MIA. She also served as a visiting teacher. On November 21, 1974 Margaret lost Selby to a heart attack and later she moved into Challis where she resided until her death. Margaret enjoyed traveling and traveled widely. One of the very special trips in Margaret's life was the summer she and her mother traveled together to visit relatives in Washington, Oregon, Utah, California and Wyoming. She never failed to return home with a memento from each stop along the way for each one of her family members. Throughout her lifetime, Margaret strived to be involved in all functions including her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She followed them through ball games, rodeos and attended each grandchild's wedding and graduation. Thanks to Channel 23, Margaret was able to watch some of her great-grandchildren's sports, plays and school activities when she could no longer physically attend. She also loved to watch the Utah Jazz play. In the late 1980s Margaret started going to the Old Time Fiddlers where she met and married a good dancer and widower, Paul Roe. They were married on their way to watch a grandchild play in the District basketball game in 1987. Margaret took into her fold Paul's children, Larry and Mick, along with Paul's grandchildren and she considered them as her own. Paul passed away in January 2000. Margaret was the hub of her family. One phone call and you knew everything about all of the family, both immediate and extended. These conversations and the birthday cards for every member of the family, which she never missed, will be sorely missed by all. Margaret is survived by her five children, Ellen and Ron Hansen, Howard and Zella Cutler, and Peggy and Julian Piva of Challis; Dan and Karen Hansen from Nampa and Shayne Hansen from Shady Cove, Oregon; two stepsons, Larry and Mick Roe; 21 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, six sisters and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held November 16 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Challis with Bishop Paul May conducting. Interment took place at the Challis Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Challis Activity Bus Fund, Challis High School. Arrangements were under the direction of Jones and Casey Funeral Home of Salmon. Note: I am of no relation, but my sympathies go out to those of you who are. This is here as a lasting memorial for Mrs. Roe.
Melissa, Very interesting. You have thrown new information my way. The early census reports don't help a lot. My first document of William (of my line) was of him purchasing property from James CAnon in 1790 (possbile 1786) in Pendleton Cty., SC. near a "big reedy branch". John Beazley witnessed. I has been my understanding this JOhn moved into Franklin Cty., Ga about 1804 and appears in the 1810 census there, in Gwinett cty., Ga in 1820 census, and in DeKalb Cty., Ga in 1830 just before his death. John had four children, maybe others, by two wives (so the history is told). Isaac and William M. were born to the first marriage and JOhn Allen and Sarah to the second marriage (an Indian according to oral history). Isaac died before 1830 and left widow, Cynthia and children. In 1848 JOhn Allen and William M. were administrators to William's estate. Oral family history states that William lived over 100 years. Cynthia and Sarah filed claim to interest in the estate. Where there other grandchildren or children of William? My estimate is that Isaac was born 1790 to 1795 and William M. about 1796. However, I have no comforting proof of this. It would appear that the Beasleys of the Pendleton Cty., SC census 1790, 1800 and the Walton War Petition would be related. How? Thanks. David
Hi David!, Let's review the Pendleton District SC Beasleys in hopes that others on the list can share information. 1790 census: William Beasley 1 male over 16, 4 males under 16, and 7 females William Beasley, 3 males over 16, 2 males under 16, and 3 females 1800 census: (0-10)-(10-16)-(16-26)-(26-45)-(45+) males listed first John Beasley 3-0-0-1-0 1-0-1-0-0 Samuel Beasley 1-0-0-1-0 1-0-1-1-0 William Beasley 0-1-2-0-1 2-0-1-0-0 All of these Beasleys above were living relatively close to one another. 1810 census: Joseph Beasley 1-1-1-0-1 4-1-1-1-0 Samuel Beasley 1-1-0-1-0 5-2-0-1-0 I believe this Joseph Beasley is the same one who appeared on the 1800 Buncombe Co. NC census .. Buncombe being just over the border from Pendleton Co. SC. In 1800, a petition was drawn up asking the Federal Government to bring a 12 mile strip of land (located between Pendleton SC and Buncombe NC) under the jurisdiction of SC. The petition was signed by Joseph Beasley, John Beasley, and Samuel Beasley. I have a copy of this petition and Joseph signed with a "X" (his mark) and John and Samuel signed with their signature. This strip of land was put under the jurisdiction of the state of GA. Another petition was drawn up asking the governor of GA to bring law and order to this region and to make sure all land claims were recognized by both GA and NC. This petition was signed by Joseph Beesley, John Beasley, and Reuben Beasley. One of the results of this petition was an order demanding that a census be taken for this newly formed Walton Co., GA. Joseph is the only Beasley on this census. Fighting breaks out between GA and NC over who rightfully owns the 12 mile strip of land. I believe at this point, Joseph retreats over the mountain into Pendleton District SC. Prior to showing up on the 1800 Buncombe NC census (although he may have thought he was in SC), I believe this Joseph Beasley was living in Wilkes Co. GA. I have found land and tax records which place him there during the late 1780s and early 1790s. He was living relatively close to George Glazener and the two families may have migrated together during the 1790s to the unclaimed area between NC and SC. George Glazener also signed the various petitions. Additionally, Joseph Beasley's daughter marries George's son. Other mention of possibly this same Joseph Beasley appears in the book Georgia Citizens and Soldiers of the American Revolution by Robert S. Davis Jr. Copyright 1979. p. 203-204 "Jail List, Ninety Six, South Carolina, 1779. Georgians and North and South Carolinians appear on the following list of men held at the Ninety Six, South Carolina jail in 1779. Many of these men were held for having fought on the side of the King at the Battle of Kettle Creek and other skirmishes in Georgia. Others were criminals or deserters from the South Carolina continental regiments. Sheriff William Moore of Ninety Six District compiled this list as part of his cliam for money owed to him by the South Carolina State government. The following is abstracted from the original in William Moore (5335) Accounts Audited growing out of the Revolution in South Carolina, SC Dept. of Arch and History. ..... Joseph Beasley, deserter from the 5th Regiment held for 30 days." p. 89 "Return of the Militia belonging to the upper counties of the State of Georgia, serving with the army under the command of General Wayne. Hd Qtrs. Ebenezer, 22d. April 1782. [From Richmond County] Priv Joseph Beasley .........." I believe this means that some of the soldiers sent to Georgia were originally from Richmond VA????? This book also mentions a Samuel Beasley; however, I believe the Sam on the Pendleton census would have been too young to have been placed on a list of soldiers in 1777. I haven't been able to find any Rev War pension records for Joseph Beasley. The above is just about all I have been able to find. With ALL of those people living in his household, he should have hundreds and hundreds of descendants. Where are they and when will they join our list????? The same goes for all the other Pendleton Beasleys!! Questions: Do you believe William's son John was living with him OR listed separately on the census?? Have you found out anymore about your Beasleys? Any comments on the above? Melissa --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Web Hosting - Let the expert host your site
Melissa, Some time back we corresponded about your Solomon or Joseph and my John and father William Beazley of Pendleton Dist, S.C. area in 1790s. I think the question was: was Solomon or Joseph related to William. Have you learned anything new about that connection? Thanks, David
