I am kinda confused--are these the folks you are talking about? I couldn't find any one you mentioned living in Texas--If so, it appears that John was their father and he probably died--and his son adopted the two young sisters. In the 1910 U.S. Census the two girls are listed with Henry and his wife Mattie as their daughters. Emma died in June 1900 and I am wondering if the girls went to live with Henry or if in 1900 Henry and Mattie were living with his parents as Mattie is listed as a daughter of John and Emma in 1900 census. All very confusing and I can't find any birth records for Texas for 1896. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It could be! My name is Roberta Estes and I'm the Director for DNA Research for the Lost Colony Center for Science and Research. (_www.lost-colony.com_ (http://www.lost-colony.com/) ) Our goal is to discover the fate of the Roanoke Lost Colonists. For those of you who don't know about the mystery of the Lost Colony, here's a primer. In 1587, Sir Walter Raleigh financed a venture in which 116 men, women and children were planning to establish the first permanent colony in the New World. Their goal was to raise tobacco and other supplies that colonists were unable to obtain in England, and to search for precious minerals, like gold. In the fall of 1587, the colonists finally arrived on Roanoke Island in present day North Carolina, after a very difficult journey in which their food supplies were ruined. They sent John White, whom they had elected governor, back to England to obtain food and supplies and expected his return in the spring of 1588. However, the Spanish attached England and England, having no Navy, impressed all of her fishing vessels and private merchant ships into Naval service. Finally, in 1590, three years after leaving the colonists which included his daughter, son-in-law and infant granddaughter, he returned to Roanoke Island to find it deserted, but not destroyed. It appeared as if the colonists had simply moved. A single word, a clue, Croatan, was carved on a tree. The Croatan were the friendly Indians living nearby. Before John's departure, he had instructed the colonists to carve crosses if they had to leave in distress. There were no crosses. John White would spend the rest of his life searching for the Lost Colonists. Many hints and clues indicate that at least some of the Colonists survived and were assimilated into the native tribes. The question is, did they, and if so, who are they today? In 1993, the original site of the Croatan village was located. Subsequent archaeological and genealogical research suggests that the colonists did survive, and that when the land was granted to settlers, it was granted to some of those survivors who were by that time considered to be Indians. With recent advances in DNA for genealogy, we finally have, today, the ability to solve the mystery. We have created a plan that combines history, genealogy and DNA to solve the mystery. However, we can't do this alone. We need the help of the families who have been identified as "families of interest", being either roster members of the Lost Colony of those who obtained land grants on the original Croatan village site. Many of those names are the same. In order to educate people and work closely with people who are interested, we are sponsoring the Lost Colony Symposium for DNA and Recent Research Sept. 7-9, 2007 at the Lost Colony Center in Williamston, NC. The symposium will be held between the Center and the Holiday Inn, as noted on the flyer at _http://www.lost-colony.com/DNAsymflyer.html_ (http://www.lost-colony.com/DNAsymflyer.html) . Given that your surname is one of those on our "Names of Interest" list, I hope that people on the list will join with us in our research. I am hoping from this mailing, aside from encouraging people to attend the Symposium, to achieve the following: 1. To identify a primary research person or persons for your particular surname who would serve as a contact/ coordinator for future postings, requests and research. 2. To identify a family archival website(s) if one exists. 3. To identify if there are any families of that surname that are from NC (or early coastal SC or VA), have oral histories of Indian or "mixed" heritage, are involved with any of the tri-racial isolate groups (Melungeons, Red Bones, etc.) and/or have any oral history of the Lost Colonies. 4. To determine if the family group is involved already with DNA testing, and if so, who coordinates that effort. 5. To determine if there is any research occurring or that has occurred for your surname in Great Britain, and if not, if anyone is interested in pursuing that avenue. To become involved with the Lost Colony project, or to support the project, please attend our Symposium. Our project plan will be announced at the Symposium, and we have a long list of wonderfully educational speakers. Bring your pedigree charts and your genealogy as the right people will be present to help you with your testing plan. If you can't attend the conference, you can still join the project. Information will be posted shortly about how to do that on the Lost Colony website. We are in the process of setting us a private newsgroup for project members only which will also be available after the symposium. Furthermore a blog is being created and blog location info will be posted on the Lost Colony website as well. If you are interested in this project or can be of help in any way, please contact me at _restes@comcast.net_ (mailto:restes@comcast.net) . Lost Colony website: http://lost-colony.com/home.html The surnames are on our blog: http://www.the-lost-colony.blogspot.com/ I will be on vacation from now until July 24th. Please e-mail questions about the Symposium or the project to either my volunteer assistant, Nelda Percival at nelda_percival@hotmail.com or Anne Pool, the Center's Educational Director at croatan@peoplepc.com. The John Beasley who was b 1755 was born in NC and died in Darlington S.C., so would not be the one you are looking for. I am still trying to determine whether or not he was the grandfather of my 3great-grandfather John Beasley who was b 1788 Darlington S.C., died 1860 Darlington S.C. Carol B. Miller -----Original Message----- From: beasley-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:beasley-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of David Beasley Sent: Saturday, June 02, 2007 1:42 PM To: beasley@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BEASLEY] Charles Henry BOTTS & Harriett E. BEASLEY Debby, from my notes: As a Revolutionary Soldier, John Beasley was a fortunate drawer of two lots in the 1820 Georgia Land Lottery. John was a resident of Franklin County, Ga. and drew lot # 378 of Early County and # 189 of Irwin County. (Authentic List of All Land Lottery Grants Made to Veterans of the Revolutionary War by the State of Georgia: from Official State Records housed in the Georgia Department fo Archives and History; Atlanta, Georgia 30334; compiled by Alex M. Hitz; second edition 1966) A John Beasley is listed in the "Roster of South Caroline Patriots in the American Revolution" by Bobby G. Moss, 1983. He was born about 1755; died after 23 Feb 1808; married Margaret (Millie) Smith; and served in the militia. Patriot Index Supplement. A John Beasley is found in the 1800 Pendleton County, S.C. census (NARs M-32; StRL-050) page 34. His family group was: 3,0,0,1,0, - 1,0,1,0,0, - 0,0. Samuel and William Beasley were also listed on page 35 of the same census. (USGenWeb) Three white males and one white females in the household were less than ten years of age. There were no residents ten to sixteen years of age and one females between the age of sixteen and 26 years. One male (likely John) was between twenty six years and forty five years. There were no slaves. John witnessed the purchase of land by William Beazley from James Cannon in 1790 indicating he was at least 21 years of age at that time. He witnessed other transactions in 1797 as recorded in Conveyence Book B of Pendleton Co, S.C. 1701-1795 ("Pendleton District, S.C. Deeds 1790-1806": Willie.) John Beazley witnessed two transactions for Phillip Cox of Pendleton Cty., S.C. in 1800 and 1802. Could this be a family connection to John's grandson Phillip who married Mary Cox September 1, 1849 in DeKalb Cty., Ga.? John had four children to my best research: Isaac (b prior 1800?); William M. (b ab 1796); Sara (b. ab 1812 & who married Tom McGriff); John Allen b 1812 from whom I descend. John moved from Franklin Cty, Ga to Gwinnett Cty, Ga and to DeKalb Cty. Ga. He died in 1830 after the 1830 census. The transaction between William and James Cannon was in Pendleton Cty, S.C. and possibly the Walton War area. I'd like to learn more of the Samuel in the 1800 census. BEASLEY I have a John Beasley who we've been looking for for at least 10 years. We believe he had brothers Samuel and Joseph and was in South Carolina or Georgia (depending on the information giver on the census). Have you seen a John Beasley in your research. I think he could possibly have been in the Old Walton War area. He was born in 1782 and died in 1874 in Maries Co., MO. Any help you could give would be very greatly appreciated. Thanks.
