Hi Beardens, I recently posted a query on O. Kinnean Bearden being born in GA but I only found him in AR in 1860. On the Family Tree Maker Family Finder I found an Onas Kennean Bearden. He possibly could be the same person, but I don't have access to all the World Family Tree CD's. If anyone out there does and can find anything about him for me, I sure would be greatful. A really nice fella looked in the GA census index for me but didn't find him. Maybe if we look for him under a different spelling, we might find something. Thanks for all your help. This is a great list. Keep up the good work. Belinda

Hi, Are any of you researching - or familiar with - the Erasmus BEARDEN, age 60, b. S.C., who appears in the 1860 Floyd County, GA, census? He was enumerated with: Ann, 58, domestic; Elizabeth, 83; John, 24, laborer; William, 22, laborer; Margaret, 12; William ?L.E.?, 24, teacher. I'd ordered the 1850 Floyd County census, too, but the copy I got was too faded to decipher anything, so I can't tell if Erasmus was there in 1850. I'm still waiting for the 1840 reel. I'm trying to determine if he's the same Erasmus BEARDEN, b. circa 1800, who disappeared from Spartanburg County, S.C., sometime between 1836-39. His wife, Dicey (BOURLAND) BEARDEN, was enumerated in 1840 Graves County, KY, census with her six kids, all of whom were born between 1829 and 1837. The concensus, at least to this point, has been that Erasmus died in S.C., prompting Dicey to pack up the kids and head back to her family in KY. By 1850 she, too, had disappeared and her children were scattered. Erasmus, by the way, was the grandson of Edmund BEARDEN, b. N.C. circa 1740. He married Dicey BOURLAND in 1828. The youngest of their six children, Benjamin Franklin BEARDEN, was my g-g-grandfather. Thanks for your help, Linda lharris@weir.net

Hello everyone! Thought I'd pass this along from Brian Leverich - rootsweb: Subject: Serious Problems Out on the Net (and at home) Resent-Date: Mon, 9 Mar 1998 17:01:22 -0800 (PST) Resent-From: listowners-announce@rootsweb.com Date: Mon, 09 Mar 1998 16:58:50 -0800 From: Brian Leverich <leverich@rootsweb.com> To: listowners-announce@rootsweb.com, rootsweb-help@rootsweb.com, STATE-COORD-L@rootsweb.com CC: "Dr. Brian Leverich" <leverich@rootsweb.com> As many of you have undoubtably noticed, the last week has been a mess out on The Net. Starting one week ago, some clown has been strobing all the hosts and routers on the Internet with an attack that is fatal (locks the machine such that it has to be power cycled to restart) to Win 95 and Win NT boxen. While this didn't directly affect RootsWeb (we're wall-to-wall Unix servers), it did kill one of our network neighbors' NT server. Unfortunately that NT server was providing reverse DNS for some of RootsWeb's boxes, so the NT server's repeated crashes caused major problems for us. It especially slowed mail deliveries from our list servers. To deal with this problem, the NT server has been "patched" to reduce its vulnerability to attack and we have taken various other technical measures to make us safer. Last night at 2am Sprintlink, with no warning to any of its customers, attempted to upgrade the operating systems on its backbone routers throughout the country. Things went badly south, and the Net is still very much crippled right now. The Sprintlink disaster essentially disconnected pieces of RootsWeb from The Net for several hours until we could adjust our routers to work around the down pieces of Sprintlink's backbone. As the Sprintlink disaster rippled through The Net, it also took down the routers at our feed from CRL. That happened while Karen and I were away from our keyboards, and the CRL down wounded our main list server. Some mail was lost, and we suspect some digests were damaged. We'll be fixing things for a few days. ): Ultimately there is no way that an individual site can insulate itself from a mess like last night, but we will be able to better protect ourselves as RootsWeb grows and operates more T1 connections to more Internet backbone carriers. Finally, this morning at 10am the textbase harddrive in the search engine box glitched and wedged, killing that server. Karen and I were working at that machine's console to revive it when the CRL link went down, which was why we couldn't save the mail server. Disk problems like this should go away as we upgrade all our servers to using redundant RAID-5 disk arrays, rather than depending on single drives. *sigh* Thank goodness weeks like this don't happen too often. As noted above, we'll be doing what we can to insulate ourselves from these sorts of problems in the future. One other thought: Karen and Brian will be away from our consoles all day tomorrow traveling on business that is critical to RootsWeb's future. It worries us a lot to leave the servers without someone physically at the consoles, but there will be some great sysadmins monitoring the site remotely and we think the potential benefits of this trip outweigh the risks of leaving the servers for a day. We apologize in advance if anything goes wrong, and we will be back late tomorrow night in any case. I don't know if he is my ancestor because my BEARDENs are in hiding....but I have an obituary for him: Madill Record, Thursday October 17, 1946 Death claims county's oldest citizen, possibly oldest in state. Wiley Bearden, 104, succumbs following pneumonia illness. Wiley Bearden, 104 believed to be Oklahoma's oldest Civil War Veteran, if not the oldest man in the State, died here at the home of his son, Dick Bearden, Saturday. If he lived only a few weeks longer he would have celebrated his 105th birthday. Mr. Bearden who was born in Georgia Dec. 25, 1841, twenty years before the beginning of the war between the states was in good health until a few weeks ago. He became ill about three weeks ago of bronchial pneumonia. He developed complications, however, and his condition became steadily worse until death claimed him. He moved to this section of the country in 1895, form Arkansas, where he had gone before the Civil War, and settled at Thackerville. Five years later he moved to Willis, and had made his home in Marshall County since that time. Two years ago he moved to Madill to make his home with his son. Only a year ago he helped his son and wife celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. Mrs. Bearden died twenty-two years ago, in 1922. In addition to his son with whom he made his home, Mr. Bearden is survived by two other sons, Sam Bearden, Madill, and Will Bearden, Pine Bluff, Ark.; two daughters, Mrs. Miley Atwood, Fort Worth, TX., and Mrs. Nettie Hawkins, Mesa, TX. and a brother Henry, of Pine Bluff, ARK. Other survivors include forty grandchildren, and 108 great-grandchildren, and 40 great-great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Watts Funeral Chapel. L. E. Carpenter, minister of the Church of Christ, of which Mr. Bearden had been a member 40 years, conducted toe services. Burial was in the Willis Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jim Eldridge, Lloyd Henson, Harve Shipley, Geo. Askew, Robert Johnson and Ebb Flint. Last year around Christmas time he was honored by the local chapter of the American Legion. At that time they presented him with a rocking chair as a mark of their respect and he told them that his favorite pastime was just "sitting and thinking." He fought as a Confederate infantryman in at least three major battles during the was between the states and recounted some of his experiences to members of the Legion at the time of his 104th birthday party. He told how he was afraid at the beginning of the first battle in which he fought, and how his fear turned to anger that kept him "just plain mad", as he phrased it, all through the war. He added however, that he was not "mad at anybody now". >
Does anyone have any information on someone named Kinnean O. Bearden? I'm not certain that is how his first name is spelled but he was born in Georgia in 1825. Don't have a wife but his children in 1860 in Jefferson County Ar are Wiley, John, Robert, Laura, James and Henry. The first two or three were born in GA also. Anything would be a help. Tammie; Due to closeness of family names, I looked at mt database, with no joy. The town you were wondering about is Lacon. It is on the Morgan Co & Cullman Co. border. Not much of a town, just a wide spot on the road really. You might try the Wallace State University Library in Cullman. They have built the largest genealogical library in the area.
