Gypsy, Dale Burley wrote a book about the Bearse family. It is titled Bearse-Bears- Barss family: geneology of Augustine Bearss (1618-1697) and Princess Mary Hyanomo (1625-1702) of Barnstable, Mass. 1638/ compiled by Dale L. Burley. Publisher is Harbor Beach MI:D.L. Burley, 1979. The copy I looked at is non-circ., but is located at the Library of Michigan in Lansing. There is an introduction that lists background information about Augustine and Mary. According to this guy, Chief Massasoit is the gramdfather of Mary Hyanno and is buried at Gay Head on Martha's Vineyard. A statue of him now stands on the Pilgrim burial ground in Plymouth, Mass. This book also states that the marriage of Augustine and Mary Hyanno is recorded in the Barnstable vital statistics. The bok also gives many of the Bearse family lines (although mine is incomplete). I have promised my sister, Sharon, that I would send her the little I copied from this book- I will do it this week. The most important part may be the sources page that tells where the author found his information. I think there was a later copy of this book written that had 2 volumes to it, but it wasn't on the shelf when I was there. If there is anything of interest in what I send Sharon, I'm sure she'll scan it and share it with all. I tried to do a search on the author to see if he's still around, but I couldn't find him. Hi Gypsy, The name in question is Laura Havrada who is a Bearse descendent and her husband Tomas. I have been in contact with her since the begining of the Bearse-D list was formed in 1998. Hi everyone! I'm one of the new kids on the block. I just joined the List this weekend. My name is Jennifer Davis, and I live in Rice, VA. Unfortunately I join you from the darker side of Bearss. I know very little about the family, but my closest connection is someone I think a lot of people have wished they could forget. My husband's grandfather was George Bearss, born in 1872. George died in 1958, in a nursing home in Port Huron, MI, but had spent much of his life incarcerated. Thanks to a relative still living in Michigan I have received copies of newspaper articles that detailed a serious, terrible incident. On December 23, 1904, George visited an aunt's house in Berville, MI. According the articles printed in the Port Huron Daily Herald, his aunt, Mrs. Abel Brown, went to the cellar to get George some cider. He approached her "with the vilest purpose in mind," and there was a struggle. He ended up bludgeoning her about the head with a whiffletree and cutting her throat. George was sentenced to life in prison in solitary confinement with hard labor in Marquette Correctional Center. The judge who sentenced him, according to the article, had representing him previously in a wife-beating charge, of which he was acquitted. The article said that 5 weeks prior to the murder, his wife and 10-year-old daughter had run away with another man. George was paroled at some point. I believe by Gov. Green (1927-1930). However, it is rumored by some family members that he was later arrested for robbing the Michigan National Bank. I have not found real evidence of that incident. George later married (I guess) a Maybelle Grace. That was my husband's grandmother. However, Maybelle divorced George at some point and married a Davis who adopted the children. It is also rumored that Maybelle was Native American. She only lived to be 46, and I have never seen a picture of her. I know nothing about her family other than she had a brother named Ed. The story of the murder was also published in the True Detective magazine in 1951. I have obtained a copy of that, thanks to the same relative, but I have not read it yet. I'm sure it was sensationalized for entertainment purposes. I'm sorry I have such a long, sad story, but I figured it was one that many had never heard. I'll try to come up with something more cheerful to share next time. Jennifer
I am here, That all sounds right, I have those papers in here somewhere. I tried to write Dale but think I was too late, heard he had passed away but not sure of it, he was from Port Huron or around there. Will get back with you as soon as i can. Start work tomorrow. When I was at the Lansing library afew years ago I found about 5 books on the Bearse/Bearss and etc. Am going back there soon and look again. I live the summer months in Utah and the winter (?) months in Yuma, AZ. My Great-great grandmother was Rebecca Bearse who was married to Levi W. Reed. Sharon Satterfield told me that her ancestor Eli Bearse and Rebecca are siblings. I guess I have been one of the quite ones on the lists, I'm trying to find out all that I can about the family. Today', I printed off Rebecca's descendents (those I have in my data base on my personal computer) and I had 13 pages - I am sure that my records only have less than half of the cousins living out here in the west. In an earlier discussion about DNA proof it was said that BYU was doing a study. Last Saturday we attended a genealogy convention held here in Salt Lake City where BYU had a booth set up for the Molecular genealogy study they are conducting. Both my wife and I chose to be a part of that study. I would hope that all of the Bearse/Bearce families will also participate. Their web site is at: http://molecular-genealogy.byu.edu Their Email: molecular-genealogy@email.byu.edu When they a large enough data base they plan that the DNA could be used to establish links to homelands and genotypic links in each populations. This will prove such family links such as Native American, etc. They require a four generation chart. The web site also lists future collection activities. I enjoy the longer messages that are on the List site. I would like to join the family site where these pictures are located. My surname "Baldwin" didn't arrive in USA until 1844, I do have the Baldwin lines that were part Native Americans in the 1600's. I am winning. Jimmy is downstairs doing dishes and I am up here playing. I am glad he knows his place. Yesterday I gave him a driving lesson on a 5-speed on the floor. It was a real adventure. Watch for the moose running towards Florida. We started out at the bottom of Sharon's mountain and somehow it all went downhill from there. Jimmy does not understand why there isn't just one pedal on the car. We did make it up the mountain in 2nd gear. All is turning out OK...I had the new tires put on the car this morning and the road crews are halfway up the mountain replacing the asphalt. Luckily there was a garden hose right outside Sharon's house and Jimmy was very quick about hosing down the fire from the burning transmission. Another lucky thing happened was the wind picked up and you could see the smoke drifting off over the mountains and we got our beautiful view back. I made Jimmy wash my footprints off the windshield so I should have good visibility for the trip home. (I am driving.) Of course Jimmy says I have to be punished again for making him a nervous wreck by making him drive a car with too much stuff to do on it. Goofy, we thought you abandoned us. Do you have a story to tell us about where you were and what you were doing??? Cousin Snow White or Pure As The Driven Slush
