Hi from Qld., Australia, In England Census records of 1851 and 1861 the place of birth for my gggrandmother, Ellen Morrissey nee Sullivan, appears to be KINMARE. However, when I googled for some information about the place I was asked 'Do you mean KENMARE?' The Census record definitely shows KINMARE as the dot is clearly above the letter 'i.' Or is it a case of confusion in hearing the Irish accent? Could someone please enlighten me - Which should it be? Or are they two separate places in Co Kerry? Regards Val.
Hi, Val, I don't know Irish geography well, but do be suspicious that the place name was taken down correctly. I have an ancestor relation who appeared in the 1861 English census as having been born in the Irish town of "Kibbercen". There is no such town, but there is one called Skibbereen. I later found evidence to support that he indeed was born in or near Skibbereen. Perhaps someone took notes in the field, then later transcribed them incorrectly onto the final census sheet. Who knows? Of course, I have not seen the record you cite, but I do know penmanship in census records varies wildly. An 'e' can sometimes look like an 'i', especially if there is a stray mark near it that resembles a proper dot. Remember that your relie although intellegent I am sure was not able to read or write at that time. In my studies of the Irish in Wales about this time, I see a lot of Bantry, Bearhaven and Bandon, towns which could be understood as it was spoken and written by a person not geographically or culturally tuned in. For example, I have a "Klamkelthy" which I assume to be Clonakilty when I put that spelling together with other regionally tied evidence. I believe that the more complicated phonetical place names with more sylables were simply recorded as "Ireland". It was a rare enumerator who cared enough to try but even those were the easy to understand placenames. Those are just my theories, no proof. With that in mind I wouldn't bat an eye at "Kinmare". That is most likely KENMARE.
