    3. Hi Riobard, thanks for pulling me up over my mistaken belief over Ardra/Ardrath and Ardagh being one and the same. That only goes to prove that even with some small knowledge of the Townlands on Beara mistakes and misinterpretations are only to easy to make. I fell in with both feet to the simplest and most common of errors by taking a name and extrapolating it to another spelling. Like the good carpenter, in future ‘I’ll measure twice’. Best Wishes. I agree with a mighty lot of what John had to say. Just one thing: Ardra/Ardrath and Ardagh are two different townlands in Bere Island. --- Riobard. ----- Original Message ----- From: "webmaster" <webmaster@bhs.ie> To: <beara@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 13, 2008 12:20 PM Subject: Re: [BEARA] Spelling. Hi Lisa, Ardra is most probably an older spelling of Ardagh and in time you may well find others. Over the centuries place and personal names change for many reasons, maybe the person writing the details mishears a word due to being unable to understand the local dialect or came from another part of the country where the spelling is different. Up until our road signs were changed from Miles to Kilometres just a few years back, many of the road signs across Ireland would have different spellings from the version printed in the State Ordnance Survey, Council planning and road maps, this was mainly due to the fact that in the 19th century when the maps were originally drawn up by the British in Dublin they used Leinster Irish and there would have been spelling variations to the Munster Irish. As Riobard has said many times over the years, just trying to decipher a single word, can on occasion take an age! Take your own family name for instance, over the years I've come across it spelt variously as: - O'Suilleabháin, O'Sullivn, O'Sullyvan, O'Suibhne, O'Suileabhain, O'Sulevane, O'Sullevane, O'Swyllyvan, O'Sylllyan and many others. So I can well understand your confusion, I've been struggling with the Irish words and Placenames of Beara for the past 20 years and still only have but a small understanding, but perseverance pays in the end and it proves that old maxim, when in doubt 'Always go to the horse's mouth', I constantly do. To restate Riobard's advice; Keep away from the 'Pay to find your ancestor's websites'. How on earth can those companies working out of from only God knows where, be able to access documents held in the local Church, Library, Society etc, let alone have the proficiency to interpret places and names in old faded documents without an through understanding of local tradition and the Irish language with all its nuances. Best Wishes. Thank you John, Now I need to understand the term Ardra since this doesn't appear as a townland, is it a family distinction like Seer rather than a location?
