Hi All Legacy gives a pretty good version free and the upgrade to the full version is $30 USD if you decide you want all the bells and whistles http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/ I have been using the free version for 3 years and am quite happy Thomas Sullivan ________________________________ From: Bill Gawne <gawne@cesmail.net> To: beara@rootsweb.com Sent: Sat, October 24, 2009 7:44:55 PM Subject: Re: [BEARA] best family tree software > can anyone recommend one Hi, I use the Personal Ancestral File software that the Mormons developed. It's available for free at http://www.familysearch.org/eng/paf/ There are prettier packages available that you have to pay for, and online java based packages that start out free and then charge you money after you hit a certain threshold of usage. They all have their pros and cons. I've found the PAF software to be best for my uses. I agree with Thomas. I have been using Legacy for about five years, and highly recommend it. It's thorough and easy to use. I highly recommend RootsMagic. I have Family Tree Maker and Legacy, but much prefer RootsMagic. In addition to all of your text information, you can scan all of your documents into it and add photos of everyone. There is also and added feature called RootsMagic-to-Go. You put your info onto a flash drive and take it with you when you visit a library or relatives and just display it on their computers. This is a read only version of your data so you cannot add to it while using it. But it is better than dragging a laptop everywhere and the information is always portable.
