Hi I just found this on the Beara roots web site: From: Connie Murphy < murphycj@eircom.net> Subject: Historic Beara (1) Date: Thu, 17 Feb 2000 16:17:13 +0000 Hi Beara folk, We are now leaving the Prehistoric Period and entering what is known as the Historic Period. We now have some information from early Irish texts (none from Beara until much later) as well as from archaeological monuments of the period, of which there are many in Beara. Christianity was introduced steadily throughout Ireland during the 5th and 6th centuries. Soon, the country was known as 'The Island of Saints and Scholars'. Several monasteries were built in Beara at this time. The present-day parishes in the peninsula grew up around the some of these monasteries. Each monastery had a 'cill', an Irish word for church. >From this we get Kilcatherine, the church of St. Chaithigheirn, which was the original name for Eyeries parish. Killnamanagh, the church of the monks, is now Allihies parish. Kilmichael, St. Michael's church was in the middle village on Dursey Island. Kilaconenagh, 'the church of the assembly place' is now Castletownbere parish. Ballynakilla, the townland of the church, once contained the earliest church on Bere Island. Kilcaskan, 'the church of St. Caskan' has become Adrigole parish. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Reg Volk" <regvolk1@uniserve.com> To: <beara@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 21, 2009 9:29 PM Subject: Re: [BEARA] More Sullivan and Murphy research > Keep digging! > > I think you will find that Eyeries is a CATHOLIC parish in the CIVIL > parish > of Kilcatherine. > > So...
