My e-mails went unanswered and we heard he was ill while we were there. Glad to see him back on the air! I hope another day will come. Hurried as we were I neglected getting any baptismal/birth/death certificates. What/where is the best place to coordinate this? We did go to Saint Michael's and found his grandparents resting place. I also took some pics of other tombstones there that might be of value to some of you. If you're interested, please let me know. You can see most clearly, though some noted below are all in one picture rather than a specific pic of that stone. My pictures are pretty big so I can zoom in on things in the background. Hi Lisa, I think your idea of creating a Memorial Headstone Photosite to the peoples of Beara a sheer stroke of genius, although the prospect of attempting to photograph most possibly in excess of 50,000 headstones across the graveyards of Beara somewhat daunting. (Perhaps Riobard could give us some idea of the actual number) Still an old saying used by the older people of Beara seems apt: - 'A Stone a Day builds a Castle' I set up a computer database nearly thirty years ago now for a local council in England to do very much the same, although without photos. Then it was collated by using the long term unemployed as a sort of work rehabilitation scheme. Maybe an idea would be to suggest it to local Schools as a long term project? There could be some problem with the more recent interments though as people may well have objections over having their recent grief publicised. Maybe a rule of thumb might be to photograph everything, but only display photos of gravestones over 20 years old. Beara Historical Society would be more than happy to contribute to this project by offering free web-space and creating a separate PhotoSite where everyone could upload their existing photos as a start. Anyone else out there have any thoughts on Lisa's brilliant idea? Best Wishes.
