I believe that the practice at that time, which is not usually the case any longer, was for the calves to be separated from their mothers shortly after birth. As they would need protection for awhile till they had grown a bit, the calf house would probably have been where they were kept. This would be as opposed to the cow house, which would have housed only the cows. In the 1970s and 80s, I know that the calves were separated from their mothers later than in 1911, but they were still separated after they were a few months old and kept in separate fields by my family. A cow house (and presumably a calf house) would have had room for several cows (or calves). In case city dwellers don't realize this, a cow can't give milk unless she's had a calf recently. So, this would also be a way of controlling how much milk the calf received, probably sparing more additional milk to make butter from. As I understand it, butter was the primary product of Beara farms well into the 20th century.
