Dear Joan, I have sent checks drawn on an American bank to Ireland several times for donations and such. Thus, I always know exactly how much it will cost me. What proportion of the funds become lost to currency exchange on the other side of the pond I cannot say, but I suspect it is much less than I would spend trying to get Euros here to send there. If you want to absorb the exchange fee, too, just bump up your donation by, say, 10%. That should about cover it. Also worth mentioning that Riobard O'Dwyer asks clients NOT to send a check drawn on a credit union. Perhaps he has had some delay or expense in the past when he received such a check from the states.
